Let's start in #Bridgwater and West #Somerset - we've got two settlements which have been targeted so far, one by private investment (#Watchet) and one by the @mhclg #townsfund (Bridgwater). #LDReporter
The first confirmed discovery of #gold in #NovaScotia was made in 1858 at #Mooseland. However, there is reason to believe that gold was found in #NS prior to then - even if in some cases people were unaware of what they had discovered!

An 1868 book by Alexander Heatherington called “A Practical Guide for Tourists, Miners and Investors, and all Persons interested in the Development of the #Gold Fields of Nova Scotia” discusses examples of potential earlier discoveries.

Gold may have been sighted as early as 1578 when explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert was given a patent by Queen Elizabeth to search for #gold and silver in the New World. The patent reserved 20% of any discoveries for the Crown.

#Mining is part of the fabric of #NovaScotia in ways we don’t always appreciate. For example, this image of a prospector panning for #gold is in the floor of the #Mineville Medical Centre. Many people probably walk over it without being aware of the area’s mining history.

Indications of #gold in #Mineville were first found by William Crooks. Young William’s father ridiculed him for thinking he had found gold so William threw the rock away.

A few years later in 1861, amid the excitement of the discovery of #gold in #Tangier, William went back to where he had found the rock and found several nuggets of gold. We now consider this the discovery of gold in #Mineville.

Last week, July 1-7, the #AlarmPhone worked on four distress situations in the western #Mediterranean region. One boat was rescued to #Spain while three were returned to #Morocco. (1)
On July 1, we were alerted to a #boat with 57 people on board, including seven women, who had left from Nador, #Morocco. In the evening we received the confirmation that the Spanish search and rescue organisation @CGTsalvamento had rescued the group. (2)
On June 10 we learned from survivors that a #boat was in severe distress between #Tangier in #Morocco & #Tarifa in #Spain. A man fell overboard. By the time he was recovered by the other 7 people on board, he had lost his life. Our deepest condolences to his family & loved ones.
