In fall of 1941 the camp administration started tattooing Soviet POWs. Initially the number was on the left side of the chest. Polish prisoners transferred to Birkenau from Auschwitz I in March 1942 were tattooed the same way, as well as Jews arriving in the first transports. 2/4
From the spring of 1942 the camp authorities ordered that incoming prisoners be tattooed on the left forearm. Jewish men arriving in new transports were marked in this way, together with Jewish women already incarcerated in the camp. 3/4
This morning a social media platform I increasingly think I should already have abandoned reminded me it's been four years since the great and good Kelly McGrath of Hillsborough gave me my most prominent #tattoos.
A fascinating thing about these particular tattoos: Like the concepts of Liberty and Justice themselves, they are a sort of Rorschach Test. I've had both armed right wing extremists and lefty social justice activists see them and assume I'm on their team.
I once had an off-duty cop doing security at a grocery store walk over to me, point to the Statue of Liberty pin-up and smile.

on this day five years ago I moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. I have lived here now longer than anywhere else since I left for college at 18, and now @CambMA really feels like my home. I love this city so much.
