Hey 👋 #educators and defenders of #publicschools:

Got an angry #MAGA family relative at your #Thanksgiving 🦃 table who likes to yell at you about #publiceducation?

Here’s a short “well actually” sheet to 👏 back:
@Network4pubEd @NPEaction @PV4PS
1/
“I’m sick of just throwing money at #schools that just waste it!”

Well, actually, Aunt Betsy, investing in #publiceducation is one of the best things taxpayers can do—more $$, better outcomes. @KiraboJackson
chalkbeat.org/2018/12/17/211…

2/
“And all this crime you damn liberals have going around too!”

Well, actually, spending more $$ on #schools helps reduce long term #crime rates too! @fordschool @BrittanyEdPol @JasonBaron4

Another look at the risk to AP designation if the CRT Ban passes from the @ocregister @roxanakopetman

Let's review what CRT is, in light of the fact that proponents of these bans think ANYTHING that mentions race or equity is CRT

Recognition that race is not biologically real but is socially constructed and socially significant.

#ChristmasIsComing🎄

Following our commitment to inclusiveness, let's introduce today the @CSEdWeek, aiming to inspire #k12 #students, advocate for #equity, and celebrate the contributions of the community!

Topic of this year: #CSforSocialJustice #CSforGood 👏🙏🤩
"The concept of social justice often refers to human rights, centered around improving the lives of groups historically marginalized based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion and disability."
"As part of the #CSforGood movement, we decided to shine a light on how Computer Science can serve as a catalyst for social justice. #CSforSocialJustice"

Imagine a near future in which the fictional University of #Leonia announces a degree program in #DiscardStudies. In doing so, they help to establish this emerging field with a full #curriculum, dedicated faculty, and eager student population. 1/10 @DiscardStudies | #Discard2020 Image
At U of L, teaching discard studies is about more than talking #trash. This new program’s core trains students to use #SystemsThinking to critique #power as the structural force that renders material, people, and land as #waste in a globalized #ColonialCapitalist society. 2/10 Image
Treating objects and organisms as "#disposable" has consequences, but the root of this #WickedProblem runs deep below the surface. Traditional disciplines are insufficient for studying waste bc they focus on the details and fail to recognize the full picture (Brown, 2010). 3/10

1/ Seven lessons from seven months of #teaching #remotely in the post Covid-19 world.

Shorter sessions.

Rather than running a 90 minute #class break it down into 4 x 15 minute session.

Each session has a central point, a framework, an example and an application exercise.
2/ An exercise needs to be time bound and interactive. Group work would be great if you could pull it off.

For instance, in financial modeling, I share half completed worksheets that need to be completed in the next 15 minutes.

In pitching, I ask them to critique a pitch.
3/ As #teachers our objective is to #teach. Can't teach without getting your students to do hands on work.

Things work differently in remote setting. You can explain all you want but till your students do the thing you are teaching with their hands, your job is not done.

I am looking for a program &/or resources that help teach #Somali to our children.

Like lots of 2nd gen ppl the #language our parents spoke is now firmly my 2nd language. I'm interested in ideas that promote #multilingualism, feel free to share & tag others. #online #clubs Image
@Poetic_Nomad @SomaliKids @thesailorsgirl @MohammedAArtan @numbiarts @AliAbdi_ @SamOfSomalia @HannaAli @Rooble2009 @Gulaid1 @robjama I sometimes feel that passing on a #language is harder for us 2nd & 3rd gen ppl. Although we were born & raised outside 'wadankii', the dynamics are different for our youth now. Interested to know what the educators think?

#Somali #Identity @MualimMohamed @ashahodan #teach
Thank Q #SomaliTwitter, I learned a lot about this today through conversations both on & offline. There is a lot of talent in our community, enough to design solutions to this & other challenges. My parents came to UK in the 60's, I grew up in the 80/90's. @WaaberiPhone 1/2

edu.oggm.org is an #interactive platform to #learn and #teach about #glaciers. We started OGGM-Edu as the "educational branch" of OGGM, but nowadays we see the project as largely independent and useful on its own. Why do we hope that it can be useful to you? 1/n
OGGM-Edu offers "hands-on" and practical activities, but only very little textbook content: we see the platform as an interactive complement to existing (and awesome) resources such as antarcticglaciers.org (@AntarcticGlacie) 2/n Image
Therefore, OGGM-Edu does not attempt to be a "one stop shop" for all things related to glaciers: our target groups are #instructors and independent learners. For example, OGGM-Edu was used by @LizzUltee to teach a week-long workshop in Peru with @CdeCPeru. 3/n Image

Good morning! I have a question: Is there a platform out there that links kids with virtual teachers (over zoom, paid online)? The online teaching works well in our house (kids like it) but I don’t know where to find interested teachers for different subjects. Any ideas?
Also very happy to sponsor a few kids if such a platform exist! Please send ideas!

#Story of my journey from #Housewife to #SareeDraper
I started my career as a fashion stylist for ad-shoots. After I got married wore saree on regular basis as I love wearing saree and I respect the attire brought down by my grandmothers and mothers.

#SheInspiresUs
I took #career break because of random #shoot timings, got busy with my family and kids. I was a housewife and used to get many compliments for the way I wore #sarees .
(3/12)
I used to help people #drape saree and so they started recommending me to others, this is how I realized To change this passion into profession. Saree is classic Indian attire and has perennial and eminent history and I want to popularize the art of perfect saree draping.

One of my 5th-grade students said something yesterday like, "it's not like segregation in the past," then our class paraprofessional replied, "it's little known that NYC has the most segregated public schools system in the US." Then I showed them a racial dot map of NYC. 1/
2/ Here's that racial dot map of NYC. Each dot reps 120 of one race, so it's a visual of racial segregation. On this map, white is green, Black is blue, Latinx is orange, and Asian is red. Source from a 2015 @nytimes article: nytimes.com/interactive/20…

See how segregated NYC is?!
3/ I asked my students if they knew white or black kids- most said no. I zoomed into Sunset Park on that map and showed the majority of ppl living there were orange and red dots, Latinx and Asian, and that their neighborhood, like almost all of NYC, is ridiculously segregated.

Imagine if the best teachers in the world quit teaching at universities and started scaling through online videos and classes? They could make the money their worth (by teaching the masses) while still delivering a superior education at a fraction of the cost of traditional
University. $10 per student x 10000 (with an option for a million) students = $100,000 ($10M) per class via online Vs $3333 per student and only 33 students for an in person class (with an option for however many the room can hold < 100).
The best teachers will naturally attract more students. They will get paid more, which based on capitalism, should incentivize more people to #teach and #mentor. Which should produce more opportunity for everyone. I like where this is headed. Universities probably not so much

Hi everyone thank you for all your support and empathy in the past few days.
To minimize further injuries, the original voicemail with the intended subject's name has been removed, but I am reposting here with name obscured: soundcloud.com/user-251012259… (thanks for tech help!)
I am also reposting my entire Twitter message regarding this incident, with other important ideas I forgot to include:
four days ago my work phone got a rambling but confrontational 3.5 min voicemail from someone questioning my legitimacy to teach based on my presumed #citizenship and #ethnic identity. You can hear the actual message here: soundcloud.com/user-251012259…
