In 2013, Mayor @RahmEmanuel said the buildings left after shuttering 50 schools would be reborn as community assets. Ten years later, we wondered, "Were they?" SO we walked the grounds, talked to neighbors and dug into documents. Here's what we learned: graphics.suntimes.com/education/2023…
You'll read about a variety of results- what sold vs what didn't, nonprofit vs for profit, CPS vs CHA. But what mattered to us — and to neighbors - was whether these buildings were returned to use or sitting doing nothing? We found that *more than half* are not useful.
That's what neighbors of these buildings have been living with for a decade. Progress has moved at a snail's pace and more than a dozen buildings still have no plans on them at all, public or private.

Reopening American schools will be a disaster. So will keeping them closed.

When the #coronavirus hit, we failed to control it — and America’s children may pay the eventual price.

Of all the American institutions the pandemic has shut down, none faces pressure to reopen quite like schools do. Pediatricians exhort schools to open their doors wherever possible or risk developmental harm to kids. Working parents are in crisis.

.@realDonaldTrump has threatened school funding in his campaign to get school doors open. But many school districts have made it clear that they can do no such thing.

THREAD: I filed this story last Thursday, hours before the first night of protests in Louisville. It was published on Monday, but, understandably, I doubt you saw it.

Here's one big reason why I hope you will still find time to read & share.
courier-journal.com/story/news/202…
Last night, while covering the #LouisvilleProtests, I found myself on East Broadway, under an interstate overpass.

And while I was doing my best to capture the powerful demonstration that was unfolding, I turned and locked eyes with a young man.
He wasn't there to protest.

He was just walking by.

Instantly, I was jolted by the realization: I knew him.

Today marks the 62nd anniversary of The Little Rock Nine, and parents, educators and community leaders there say the state's new plan for its schools would catapult Little Rock back into an era of school segregation. usnews.com/news/education…
"This is our 1957 in 2019, and people will look back and judge this moment the same way we judge people's actions in 1957. Don't repeat 1957. Don't be the person sneering in the photographs."
Here's what's happening: The State Board of Education voted in 2015 to take control of Little Rock schools, in large part justifying its decision on the results of a new state accountability system that showed that six of the city's 48 schools were not meeting academic benchmarks

@TXSBOE And we're off!

The @TXSBOE has gaveled in. Chair Bahorich says live stream is down, so I'm glad I'm here in person!

First up today is public testimony on the changes to the social studies curriculum. 35 people have signed up to speak. #txlege #txed
@TXSBOE Some curriculum changes have gotten more attention than others.

Yes, Helen Keller and Hillary Clinton (both recommended, not required, to be taught) are on the chopping block.

But there are DOZENS of other proposed changes too.
