One of the biggest internal conflicts I have faced when training came about bc of a close collaboration with an employer. The name does not matter.
Point is, we were asked to train "their" dialogue interpreters - i.e. people who worked for them on a regular basis.

During the training, it became apparent that some of these interpreters had such an insufficient command of the language of training that they could not understand basic instructions.
This was their main working language as interpreters.

"Notifying" the employer - who clearly must have been aware of this to some extent already?
Potentially contributing to these interpreters losing their job?
Say nothing and legitimize a practice that cannot ensure access for beneficiaries?

Today I want to tweet about an interpreter training course I did a few years ago. For data protection reasons I will not disclose the names of institutions and persons involved. The point here is to give you some food for thought. #1nt

The request came through a group of academics who had made contact with a nearby prison. This prison was reserved for foreign nationals, i.e. people not holding citizenship of the country of detention. My task: teach the inmates to interpret better.
For a variety of legal reasons, these inmates had no right to an interpreter. Even when they had interpreters for official exchanges, 95% of exchanges inside the prison were not covered by this provision. Many inmates did not or only barely speak the official language.
The truth is: #terps feel delegates using English as a lingua franca is a replacement for interpreting & a threat - and there is a lot of truth in that. The problem with this attitude is its hypocrisy: we use English in our own meetings (prof. associations, academic confs)!
When I present an academic paper, I use English to increase my reach bc I know that things like "impact factors" matter. So I am in no position to criticize any speaker doing the same. I am tweeting in English right now for the same reason - see the irony?!
Ultimately, English as a global Lingua Franca is a reality. It has obvious pitfalls but it also opens a lot of opportunities for millions of people. And interpreters acting as gatekeepers here is not very helpful.

One additional aspect that I want to use this platform for is to discuss some aspects of "interpreting in conflict zones", as I believe a lot of misinformation exists on this topic, including amongst professional interpreters.
For instance many #Terps have signed the UN petition to protect Translators and Interpreters in armed conflict. This petition is also supported widely by professional associations. I have not, as I believe its implicit analogy with journalism is misguided.
There is a lot of groundwork in terms of professional ethics, disciplinary instances, national organizations and sensitisation that interpreters need to do before we can claim a status akin to the press for any individual who interprets or is employed as an interpreter.

@translationtalk 2) Ability 2 hear & understand exists @ around 75 % although other ppl may be around or background noise is present. Task highly influenced by signal to noise ratio (how much background noise there is). A mere 10 db difference separates “no can do” from “perfect intelligibility”!

100 participants, 2 of them host/co-host, 14 of them interpreting, EN-ES-FR-DE-IT > EN-ES-FR-IT configuration (based on lang. combination of volunteering interpreters, it works with up to 7 languages). 3-4 terps per booth (up to 6 tested on same booth).

I really have a problem with this narrative that interpreters have been reluctant about #r1nt because of ideology. It sounds very dismissive of interpreters’ concerns regarding #r1nt. In my eyes those concerns are very legitimate and much more than ideology. A thread. 1/
I want to make clear from the start that I see a big distinction between #r1nt from home versus from a hub. There are many serious issues with the former while I see opportunities and some issues with the latter. /2
