Throwback to the art that got me hired on #themitchellsvsthemachines. 🧵

I left my visdev job in SF and moved in with my grandma in her small rural town. I wanted to capture these slice of life moments that were special to me...like chilling in the car eating pan dulce.
It was invaluable to see how all of these personal specific moments could resonate universally. Here we are drinking atole and watching Corona de Lagrimas but ultimately it's a universal family moment.
Here I'm wearing some payless bogo pumps from one of our shopping trips while reading her TVyNovelas magazines out loud to practice my Spanish, she's correcting me and explaining novela celeb gossip. (a version of these chairs is in Mitchell's kitchen)

What I Learned from Chris Miller + Phil Lord on #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines

Lots of ppl asked what I learned from my literal heroes from making a film with them for a year: A TON

These are the Top 10 Lessons I learned that I will never forget:

Thread🧵 1/?? Image
1. Fight Against Formula in Every FRAME!

Me+@Roweyourboatz shared this core value with Chris + Phil.

BUT-

The DEGREE to which they examine EVERY single moment + iterate until there's NOT ONE "stock" decision left- truly surprised me!
From Big Ones:
They were the BIGGEST supporters to have Katie draw on the screen, creating 2D/3D hybrids.

The studio occasionally wavered- but Chris+Phil fought hard for it saying "This is what makes the film unique! If we're just copying other movies- why even make it?" ImageImageImageImage

Some thoughts on #TheAfterparty episode 6: ZOË

Written by genius @philiplord & the hilarious @rachelsmitts

Designs by the great #TheMitchellsvsTheMachines Prod. Designer @lindseyolivares

Animated by Shadowmachine (doing new #CloneHigh eps), led by the talented @Annam8tor
@philiplord @rachelsmitts @lindseyolivares @Annam8tor This was the most ambitious episode to produce. We'd snap pictures of the actors in costumes on the 1st day of shooting (like this) and email them to Lindsey Olivares to draw caricatures from. Then while we shot a scene I'd take phone pics of the sets so BG designers could start
@philiplord @rachelsmitts @lindseyolivares @Annam8tor The pipeline happened concurrently as we shot and edited the rest of the show - designs revised, storyboards evolving, voice records on set at the end of the day. #TheAfterparty

I want to revisit this old thread I did about this shot I animated on #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines and give you a bit more of an in-depth technical look at how a shot like this was managed for all you 3D animation nerds out there! ⚡️

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to share what the layout on this shot looked like when I got it assigned to me, so you'll have to just imagine the Mitchells all in T pose moving in a straight line through the mall 😅
When we get shots from layout, all of the animation is baked on ones on the characters' main controls and camera. Usually this is fine because we won't need to touch the camera too much in anim, and if we do then it will be a small adjustment (most of the time).

It's so amazing seeing all the love and recognition (AND AWARDS BAYBEEE) that #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines is getting!! It's one of my favourite things I've ever worked on, so here's a 🧵 about another one of the shots that I animated!
Having excellent storyboards to work from, I didn't want to stray toooo far from the poses but still wanted to pitch ideas wherever I could! Here are some very loose scribbles from when I first got the shot assigned, just trying to get a feel for the moment! Image
My pitches that strayed from the boards all went a bit too far hehe like Rick carrying Katie up the hill on his back and Aaron holding up Monchi Lion King style, BUT the one thing of mine that stayed (that I am very happy we got away with) was Katie losing her tooth 🤓

#TheMitchellsVsTheMachines was a big studio animated film made by 1st timers.

So when we pushed to make our main character queer, some people got VERY nervous.

But a badass LGBTQ+ artist- Lizzie Nichols wrote *this* letter that made me SOB + will stay with me forever.

🧵1/8
Lizzie(@raptorclaws) was the 1st person we talked to when ppl were asking: "Is Katie... gay?"

Me+co-director @Roweyourboatz are not- but loved the idea + didn't know if we *could* or should?

Lizzie said: "YES! Do it! Are you NUTS? This is a HUGE opportunity!"

Her RAD art:

We talked to Lizzie about how we could make Katie's character feel honestly queer.

Lizzie said "well my hair is blonde, my eyes are blue, and i like girls. It's just part of who i am.

Katie should be like that.

It should just feel *normal.* "

#TheMitchellsVsTheMachines watch party begins!
We all wanted Katie to own this movie right up front and this Columbia logo sets the tone for the movie and Katie Mitchell’s aesthetic
#MvMwatchparty Image
Katie drinks “Mountain Rush” soda. In college while making student films, Phil and I would consume a case of Mountain Dew a night. One night we bought caffeinated water (called “Javaqua”) and then made coffee with it. #MvMwatchparty
There is a wooden etched sign above the door in the kitchen that says “NO SCREENS AT THE TABLE” but like at my own household, nobody follows it

I’m going to point out some details you may have missed in shots from #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines trailer to show how @michaelrianda & team created a film with such groundbreaking visuals. A thread!
Mike wanted the film to have a hand-painted watercolor style so we brought @mlasker - a genius from the Spider-Verse team - to use some of the techniques developed on S-V to give this movie its own look. Some examples:
Look closely at the texture on the fur collar of Rick Mitchell (the dad)‘s jacket. Instead of super realistic detailed fur simulation, it’s a bunch of hand-painted squiggles. Which is actually much harder to pull off. Image

296. #SophieJones (2021) A raw and resonant coming of age story about dealing with grief and overcome pain,it feels very personal. The cinematography is gorgeous and visually stunning with excellent performances by the cast especially the lead who is great.Really good. ⭐⭐⭐1/2 ImageImageImageImage
296. #Moxie (2021) A fun and entertaining coming of age movie that might be a bit flawed, but the performances by the cast is good and it is a bit long however it deals with a lot of important issues and it have a really powerful scene at the end, the direction is strong. ⭐⭐⭐ ImageImageImageImage
297. #TheHitchHiker (1953) A swift thrilling noir film that is visually pleasing with great direction, it is very tense, suspensful and fast paced (yeah it's only 70 min)anchored by a trio of great performances by the cast. The story might not fully fleshed but still fun. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ImageImageImageImage
