THREAD: I find it quite curious that, for all the ridicule and criticism, few have acknowledged an obvious reality - #TheQueue is a massive #psyop. This is a particularly peculiar oversight given the very notion of queuing as quintessentially British is in itself a psyop.
In WW2, it served the purpose of ensuring the collection of rations and handouts wasn’t smash-and-grab pandemonium. People queued then because they had to. Now, people are queuing because the state wants them to - in order to legitimise the monarchy, and hereditary rule.
In short, #TheQueue has generated enormous amounts of international coverage, which directly and indirectly reinforces the notion The Queen, and the institution she represents, is overwhelmingly popular. It has also created a massive distraction at a highly expedient time.

Guys, guys! The Royal Family visited #TheQueue!
Lord, this was just the right gesture to make. Most of those stalwart people in #TheQueue know they it’ll be a long haul. 24 hours to see the Queen, IF they get to see her. To get a surprise visit by William and Charles is ALMOST a sop.
The lady on the left photo who handed Paddington to Charles came all the way from PERU to do so. The Queen touched everyone. She just wasn’t the People’s Queen.

SHE WAS THE WORLD’S QUEEN. #TheQueue

Several people have told me that #TheQueue ( #thequeueforthequeen) is like something from the Middle Ages and have asked me, as a medievalist, about it. Here are a few #medieval thoughts about some similarities and differences. 🧵
People on @BBCr4today described seeing flashes of light at the catafalque. Similar signs were reported at medieval royal shrines; e.g at St Fremund's tomb at Offchurch (Warwickshire) the sun shone brightly as a 'special sygne', guiding pilgrims to the entombment of the saint St Fremund's body entombed under an elaborate canopy at Offc
(The Catafalque, a word we don’t use very often, is a borrowing from baroque Roman Catholicism, especially papal catafalques. @OED says it first appeared c. 1660 as 'cartapalco' and derives from medieval Latin 'catafaltus', scaffold. Here's Pope Paul V's catafalque, Rome, 1621) Pope Paul V [Borghese]'s catafalque, Rome (Santa Maria Maggi

The Queue is a marvel of Britishness. I’ve just joined in Southwark Park. I’m at the head of the queue and have been walking for 15 minutes of rotating Z shapes.
People aren’t overtaking each other, even when marginal gains could be won. I’m behind an old couple walking slowly, but I’m not overtaking and taking the W.
Can confirm there are more toilets here than at Reading Festival.

Much speculation about who’s in #TheQueue and why, but little evidence. That is, until a doughty band of @uniessexgovt researchers began a survey (using the kinds of methods developed for studying protests). Survey ongoing but here are snippets based on the first 300 responses.
First, @ReicherStephen (theguardian.com/commentisfree/…) is right about the multiple motivations for attending. Being there at a historic moment was as important as Queen-specific motivations, and things like "feel part of a wider group" were given 6/6 importance by plenty of queuers. Image
And multiple things that people feel that they have lost (based on a question asking people what -- if anything -- they see themselves as honouring or mourning). Image

#TheQueue has just been paused for 6 hours, so they can now interview all the people who are queuing to get into the queue.
Several people telling me that some in #TheQueue are taking relatives’ ashes along with them as they’d apparently have wanted to be there, and I’m seriously wondering if this society can survive much longer.
If security doesn't allow relatives' ashes to be taken in will people eat them?

There are very few people I’d do this for. But it seems I’m on the train to London to join a very long overnight queue with my dear old Mum.

Here comes a rolling thread about #TheQueue Image
My Mum absolutely loves the Queen and is the owner of many a commemorative item (plates, tea towels, spoons, mugs, cake tins). She spent her honeymoon in London for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. She spent all night queuing to see the Queen Mum’s coffin, before working the next day.
And so when the Queen died, it was clear my Mum would want to pay her respects, regardless of the length of The Queue. It was also clear she’d need some company.

And that’s how I found myself here on the 9.45pm train to London, trying and failing to sleep before the epic event. Image

They’ve just interviewed a woman asking her about the ham sandwich she has brought to #TheQueue

She made it at 7 this morning and there are also some tomatoes in the Tupperware.

I’m losing my mind.
Seldon just said visiting Westminster Hall may be one of the most significant moments of many people’s lives. He makes Witchell look like Guy Fawkes.
Two other people also had sandwiches prepared but have eaten them too early, they explain.

For those brave enough to endure #thequeue, here's thread of some of the many film locations you can find along the way, starting at the Bermondsey end. #QueueForTheQueen #filmlocations #filmlondon
First up we have apartment which John Cleese's Archie Leach "borrows" in A Fish Called Wanda (1988) near Bermondsey Wall West with the entrance at St. Saviour's Dock (the route unfortunately only goes round the back of the buildings). ImageImage
St. Saviour's Dock also appears 11 years later as part of the famous Thames boat chase in James Bond film The World is not Enough (1999). Image

In an extremely off brand move, decided to queue to see the Queen as A Bit. Open to being commissioned to write an anthropological study of royalists who are willing to devote 4+ hours to their time to quickly see a box that may or may not have an old lady in it.
Timeline so far: went to @haywardgallery to see lovely in the black fantastic exhibit closing on Sunday. 7.30pm brought my queuing friend a sandwich. It was moving at a reasonable pace so walking and talking as we went. Thought it would be funny if I stayed but hadn’t committed
8.15pm at London Eye, got wristbands which read LISQ (lying in state queue), quite exciting. Pace quickened, at one point we were practically running ! with Westminster on the other side in sight. This was ill fated naive optimism. Photo of Westminster taken whilst running
