On this day in 1913, the Treaty of Bucharest was signed by delegates of #Bulgaria, #Romania, #Serbia, #Montenegro, and #Greece, ending the Second Balkan War. This conflict was another example of Balkan instability due to unsolved border disputes and Great Power politics. Image
After centuries of presence of the #OttomanEmpire in the Balkans, it began to weaken in 19th century. The Balkan nations were also aware of this. In 1912 four Balkan kingdoms - Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro - created the Balkan League to liberate its territories. Image
Soon after, the Ottomans began to mobilize their army. This was also done by the Balkan kingdoms. The great powers have warned that they don’t support border changes in the Balkans. However, Montenegro was first to attack in October 1912, which started the First Balkan War. Image

It is remarkable that some 120 years ago, the population of #Istanbul was only 43 percent #Muslim — the majority being #Christian or #Jewish.

Today, Istanbul is probably 99 percent Muslim (or post-Muslim.)

What caused this homogenization wasn't #Islam but #nationalism.
Also notable is that in this big chart of European cities, the largest #Jewish percentage ("Israeliten") is found in the Ottoman city of #Thessaloniki.

For the Ottoman Empire was really one of the best homes that Jews ever had in the pre-modern era. Image
Let me also add that the #nationalism that destroyed Ottoman pluralism was heavily infused with religion: "Muslim vs. Christians."

This is for Turks. But the opposite is also true for Serbian, Greek & Bulgarian nationalisms, which also launched genocides, "population transfers."

#Greece #Thessaloniki #Coronavirus

According to a study published on Tuesday, after ongoing monitoring of waste water in major Greek cities as a way to predict an increase in Covid-19, it now appears that the virus trajectory is still steep in Thessaloniki.
Raw sewage testing in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, has shown that the northern port city is not close to flattening the coronavirus transmission curve, following a steep increase in infections over the past few weeks.
The latest research , published by the Aristotle University of the city and the EYATH water and sewerage utility, both of which measured the prevalence of the novel coronavirus with routine testing,

Ready for a travel-Thread from yesterday? On my #trainWeddingtrip another #nighttrain was needed: №1335 "Hellas" from #Belgrade🇷🇸 to #Gevgelija🇲🇰 (+ #Thessaloniki🇬🇷 by bus). It's a train w/ a long history but it's today's existence is only a poor copy of former glory!
1st difficulty: One has to get to #Belgrade🇷🇸 Topčider train station by tram. Sadly no trains leave the beautiful main train station anymore. Tram-infos are rather hard to find, but buying tickets is easy, just hold your 💳 to one of these ticket-cancellers 👍! #trainWeddingtrip
There is not much around #Belgrade🇷🇸 Topčider, mainly a big park. From there, 4 international trains are leaving & arriving the city (2x #Bar🇲🇪, 1x #Sofia🇧🇬 & 1x #Gevgelija🇲🇰). Next to this building there is a ticket-office AND a GREAT😍 railway station pub🍺🍔! #trainWeddingtrip

This sounds like the US is planning to strike #Syria and Trump will remain in the US to closely monitor responses by #Russia. This is terrible.
BREAKING - British forces are now mobilizing at their bases in #Cyprus for strikes against #Syria. It appears very likely that the US, France and U.K. will strike Syria in the next 24 hours. This is dreadful.
