You’ve probably heard that pharmaceutical company @pfizer has announced that early analysis of its coronavirus vaccine suggests that the vaccine is more than 90% effective in preventing COVID-19. nytimes.com/2020/11/09/hea… Image
There has already been A LOT of speculation about the timing of the announcement and #Election2020. REMEMBER: speculation without evidence is how baseless conspiracy theories are born. Image
So, let’s stick to the facts: @pfizer is not a part of Operation Warp Speed, the federal effort to develop a vaccine. Kathrin Jansen, the head of vaccine research and development, said politics does not drive how Pfizer conducts itself. @nytimes nytimes.com/2020/11/09/hea… Image

Early this morning, @realDonaldTrump announced that he and @FLOTUS tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, there has been A LOT of speculation and reactions circulating. REMEMBER: this is a developing, breaking-news story. Here’s what to do and what NOT to do to follow it:
Read AT LEAST 3-4 reliable sources. When possible, seek out primary sources too. This includes updates from the @WhiteHouse or the @JoeBiden campaign on contact tracing. The more sources you read, the better you’ll understand the facts and the full scope of the story.
Avoid conjecture conversations or stories about the “what ifs.” Focus on the information we have right now and updates rooted in facts as they become available. Doom scrolling through nightmare scenarios will not be beneficial to you or the people who read the content you share.

The news about Glee star Naya Rivera being missing is deeply saddening. It's important in times like these that we consult trusted sources before sharing information that is potentially false or misleading. #ThinkBeforeYouShare
The best advice we can give is to go directly to the source! In this case, it's the @VENTURASHERIFF who has been providing updates since the news first broke. #medialiteracy
We also encourage that you read reporting from multiple news outlets. Given that she's a public figure, multiple outlets will be reporting on this and their facts should align. Ask yourself, "what are other sources saying?" This is a question developed by @SHEG_Stanford.

Hey Jessi! This actually isn’t true. We did a fact check on whether wearing a mask increases your likelihood of getting carbon dioxide poisoning and you can watch that here. instagram.com/tv/CBLopIoAMUT/ But we did a quick deep dive into this claim, and here’s what we found.
We used a quick keyword search and found that pneumonia is caused by coughs and sneezes that expel tiny droplets of germs into the air that someone else may inhale, or by touching an infected surface then touching your mouth or nose.

According to this article from the Cleveland Clinic, if you have a face mask on, you’re less likely to touch your mouth or nose. And like COVID-19, wearing a mask won’t prevent you from breathing in these droplets of germs. health.clevelandclinic.org/unsure-about-a…

A follower got our attention on this tweet from @LeaveEUOfficial about Britain abolishing slavery. We’ve never heard a claim like this before, so we decided to fact-check it!
We're based in the U.S. & we're frankly not familiar with Leave EU, so we went to their Wikipedia to get some broad strokes about what this organization does. Turns out it’s a UK-based political campaign that supports Brexit. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leave.EU Image
The campaign formed in 2015 with the primary mission to support the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. It’s a pretty complicated movement, so read this summary from @BBC. bbc.com/news/uk-politi…

So this #DCBlackout stuff? NOT LEGIT. Tweets went around claiming that because of the #GeorgeFloydProtests, all cell service was blocked and no one could get into contact with the protestors. But this has been debunked!
There’s a lot of conflicting information going around. Some people are claiming it was faked, others are saying they witnessed it. This photo was shared around frequently, claiming to be a pic of DC right before this happened.
One of the photos that was going around, looked similar to the photo above but was actually a screengrab from the ABC Show Designated Survivor. Make sure you do a reverse image search of photos before you share them, especially as news is quickly unfolding. Image

Hi all! Our friends at @PolitiFact have already been fact-checking some claims you're probably seeing surrounding the #GeorgeFloydProtests. politifact.com/article/2020/m…
People on Facebook were saying #GeorgeFloyd's death was staged. Not true! politifact.com/factchecks/202…
Another person on Facebook claimed a Target store in Minneapolis was looted for supporting police by "refusing to sell milk to tear-gassed" protesters. #GeorgeFloydProtests

@PolitiFact didn't find any evidence to support this. politifact.com/article/2020/m…

Shoutout to our follower @bibleviz for getting our attention on this tweet. Let’s fact-check it!
Let’s figure out who posted this. @Travelito24 is a travel account that shares high-quality photos from unique places around the world. FYI they don’t claim ownership to all of the content they post. See their bio 👀👀 Image
Given what we know about this account, it’s kinda weird that they’d share photos like this, but not weird that they’re unattributed since they don’t claim to own all the content they post.

1/14 *ASTROTURFING*

An important digital phenomenon that is often misunderstood and really important to understand so you can spot inauthentic content, platform manipulation, and potential misinformation. No space involved!
2/14 1st, what is astroturfing? It’s coordinated messaging meant to appear as grassroots opinion, and it exists allllll over the web in diff forms.

Astroturf = fake grass, so astroturfing = fake grassroots digital activity. Bots/actors pretending to be genuine people/accounts
3/14 Examples: fake reviews on Amazon, inauthentic submissions to government consultations, and bots on social media platforms

(no social media platform is safe btw)
