Three years ago, #SterliteCopper plant in #Thoothukudi was closed down after violent agitation.

India was reduced from an exporter of copper to an importer.

Around one lakh families lost their livelihood.

How did this happen? What is the truth?

A thread (1/8) ā¬‡ļø
1. Protestors accused plant of environment pollution. But expert study suggests otherwise.

Propaganda : Plant wastes pollute environment

Reality : No incident of unhygienic waste disposal reported. Waste generated are used in cement production, road construction etc. (2/8)
Propaganda: High level of SO2 emitted by plant.

Reality : Study conducted by TNPCB repudiated the claim. SO2 is not discharged but used as raw material for manufacturing 'sulphuric acid'

Similarly claims about cancer, groundwater pollution etc. was also found exaggerated. (3/8)

#SupremeCourt hearing #Vedanta plea to reopen tuticorin Sterlite plant

Dr AM Singhvi for Vedanta- wastage of national resource can be stopped by allowing short 3 month run of the plant. I'm not arguing on merits
There is a preconceived decision to not allow the plant to run
Justice Nariman- you've had this plea for short runs for 2 years.

@DrAMSinghvi- the short run would allow us to identify any issues still remaining. The plant started in 1997. Provides direct employment to 4000 people, indirect employment to about 20,000.
Singhvi: Trickle down dependants are more than 2 lakh. Supplying 36% of the country's copper needs. Now India is becoming dependant on Copper imports.

NEERI had made environment impact report and gave 30 recommendations. Compliance of 29 out of 30

"Poor conviction rates in cases of custodial torture & deaths have further created a climate of pervasive impunity, emboldening the police officers. This must end now" said Executive Director @Avinash_1_Kumar.
According to 2018 National Crimes Record Bureau data, Tamil Nadu accounted for the second highest deaths in custody.

But not a single police personnel was arrested.
