Der Thwaites-Gletscher in der Antarktis ist größer als Tschechien, Österreich und die Schweiz zusammen, schon jetzt schmilzt er ab und ist damit für 4% des globalen Meeresspiegelanstiegs verantwortlich.
Nun haben Forscher*innen der American Geophysical Union allerdings riesige diagonale Risse quer durch das Schelfeis gefunden, die immer schneller wachsen. Die Prognose: In den kommenden fünf Jahren könnte die Eismasse schlagartig kollabieren. Was würde das bedeuten?

Jusqu'à ce jour, cette partie orientale de Thwaites semblait la plus solide, mais des images satellites prises le mois dernier montrent plusieurs grandes fissures diagonales à sa surface.

Des scientifiques sont constamment à son chevet et ils ont constaté que la mer, de + en + plus chaude, est en train de rogner la glace qui le maintient sur le fond rocheux sous-marin, faisant apparaître des fissures et des écoulements de plus en plus importants au-dessus.
