1/🧡 You are a BAD #GOLFER & have a big day with buddies & are in the tall grass a LOT. Later, you take off a #tickπŸ‘‡and in 7 days develop a fever & headache. You have no rash. The emergency room gives you acetaminophen. Is that OK?

2/ Tick bites are a big deal in Summer months. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is a concern, and the absence of rash also brings up #Ehrlichiosis. This @NEJM paper showed that worse golfers retrieved balls from the rough & got the dz more often!

3/ Of those with #Ehrlichiosis, 20% get bad nervous system dz & 20% of those die. If you live in Southern US and find a Lone Star tick (pic above), and then develop fever & headache, get evaluated and probably start the antibiotic doxycycline quickly!

One of the big #LymeDisease lies is that it takes two whole days of tick attachment to transmit disease. There have been studies published debunking this lie, but I like to use #tick #biology instead. iai.asm.org/content/70/7/3… Image
And #spirochete #science. Because first of all, you have to know how spirochetes operate. They are able to adapt to different environmental conditions by changing their outer surface proteins (Osps).

It’s pretty well known and accepted as fact that Borrelia spirochetes express OspA in the tick gut environment and OspC in a human. How do they change their coat from OspA to OspC while they are feeding?

Ever shattered an orange using liquid nitrogen? That's how we get DNA out of ticks in our new @FrontiersIn article frontiersin.org/articles/10.33… @UMassMedical @broadinstitute @karlssonlab
We have a lot of ticks. 1000s & 1000s of ticks. People send them to us as part of our #citizenScience #tick disease study ProjectAcari.org. The problem? getting the DNA out.
We want to use high-throughput #DNA sequencing to find out everything we can about each individual #tick - its species, its intestinal #microbiome (they have one too!), and if it carries dangerous pathogens.
