1/ Q: Can I go back to my indoor #fitness classes? 🚴‍♀️

A: The #NerdyGirls LOVE your efforts to stay fit 💪, but best to hang on to those online or outdoor workouts a bit longer.

TL;DR: Heavy breathing, no masks, and indoors is the perfect recipe for #SARSCoV2 #transmission.
2/ A recent U.S. @CDCgov report described an #outbreak linked to an unnamed fitness facility in #Chicago in which *55 out of 81* attendees of an indoor high-intensity fitness class in Chicago were infected over the course of a week in August 2020.
3/ ❓What precautions were being taken?

➡️ The classes were at <25% capacity, with masks 😷, temperature & symptom checks required at entry. 🤒 Exercise mats were spaced 6 feet/2 meters apart. ↔️

The most frustrating part of #TigerKingNetflix was that the directors brought up real conservation and animal welfare issues, but had no unbiased experts to debunk misinformation. This is a thread of experts' posts on #TigerKing about these issues. Please add ones I miss.
First, Dr. @TaraPirie explains in @ConversationUK why releasing captive big cats into the wild won't work. Essentially, animals born outside of accredited zoos (@zoos_aquariums in the US) do nothing for #conservation.

theconversation.com/tiger-king-why…
Next this piece in @PBSNature by @sguynup + @swfoto, journalists who spent years documenting the captive tiger tourism industry in the US by "investigating hands-on tiger attractions that heavily breed, use, and then dump tiger cubs for profit."

Joe exotic (#TigerKing) hated the fact Big Cat Rescue ranked no.1 on Google "stealing his damn customers". Well, maybe it's the 157K backlinks to the domain!

I used @ahrefs + @BuzzSumo to look at the backlink profile and here's some interesting stats (a thread) #CaroleBaskin
The site (bigcatrescue.org) has 157K backlinks pointing to the site, coming from 6,352 domains!

Before the series launched on Netflix - the site had 4,391 domains linking to the site meaning they've seen a 45% increase in domain links in the last month!
1719 of those link to the site using exact domain anchor text of "big cat rescue" - juicy as hell 🔥

EVEN MORE juicy - 79% of them are followed

"That b**ch Carole Baskin!"

NIGHTLY READING THREAD: Welcome to Edition #30 of #GMGReads. Every night through this weird time, I'm tweeting out a list of my five favorite books around a general theme—and a link to an indie bookstore where you can order them online....
Tonight, in honor of #TigerKing, I wanted to share some favorite "books-that-read-like-great-documentaries," including the legit book you'll find about tigers, all for sale at @oldtownbooks in Alexandria, where I did a great event in October last year. Buy a book! See the world!
1) John Vaillant (@johnvaillant), who is just an incredibly talented writer and reporter, wrote the greatest book you'll ever read about tigers, THE TIGER, about the Siberian Tiger and the wilds of Russia: oldtownbooks.com/?q=h.tviewer&u…

You ready for the truth behind #TigerKing , the @netflix docuseries everyone is talking about?

The bizarre behavior of everyone involved can be explained by one thing they're all likely to have in common: infection from the "cat" parasite Toxoplasma. Thread.
Joe Exotic – Multiple studies have linked Toxoplasma infection to increased risk-taking behavior. In addition, a 2014 study showed higher Toxo infection rates in inmates compared to the general population.
Kelci Saffery - A 2014 study found that Toxoplasma infection correlates with a higher risk of workplace accidents.

A reporter contact at an LGBT publication just reached out to schedule an interview to discuss how city and state leaders can better support disabled people during this time of #COVID_19. It made my heart flip (in a good way) to see reporters beginning to be proactive on this.
Of course, there’s lots of great stories with people like @aneeman and @SFdirewolf who have been pushing for this coverage along with the work of others like @mattbc. I’d like to this this press request is a ripple that happened because of their work.
*In scheduling the interview, the reporter mentioned he’s been watching #TigerKing on Netflix (along with half of the country).

“I’m always happy to go on record about ‘Tiger King’!” was my response.

To anyone currently bingeing #tigerking on Netflix:

I spent four years working on a podcast and a long magazine story about Joe and Carole. I spent a week living at the zoo. I’ve spoken with almost everyone you’re seeing in the doc, and I attended the trial. Ask me anything!
Here’s the podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/joe…

And here’s the magazine story: nymag.com/intelligencer/…

A few pieces of trivia, for people who just watched #TigerKing on Netflix.

1. Joe did not write or sing those country songs. It was an outfit called the Clinton Johnson Band. Joe just sang softly over the top of the vocal track:
