Black neighborhoods that were redlined in the 1930s have far fewer trees, which help to cool air and absorb heat. As a result, poor Black neighborhoods can be up to 10° F hotter than white suburbs. This is the direct result of decades of anti-Black disinvestment.
Environmental racism is a root issue of segregationist policies that have kept Black communities disinvested from for decades.
