In #Todmorden around 5 years ago and everyone started calling the local 6ft, aggressive TiM “she”, it was very disconcerting because I saw something else completely. I saw a raging fem-man. I thought the locals had been hypnotised or gone psycho. Then “she” threatened me.
Which wasn’t so much of a surprise, as he’d heard rumours that I was a “lesbian activist”. I was, but denied it. I also called him “she” once, in order that he didn’t punch me. Does male violence disappear when you put badly applied make-up on? No it doesn’t!
Then I was banned from local pubs because I “made him feel unsafe”. I’m 5ft4in. I lost security work and found out I’d been labelled a “transphobe”. That mean community isolation. These people were all white, straight, middle-class, educated, Left wingers. Posh-kids! All “queer”.
