#Trams were once the backbone of #Seoul's #publictransit system. The 1st launched on #Buddha's Bday in 1899 by Gojung, & the last ran Nov 30, 1968. The network was greatly expanded in the colonial era, & recently track laid in 1927 was uncovered in front of #Gyeongbukgung Palace ImageImageImageImage
This track was in use till ‘66 & buried during the construction of a pedestrian underpass at Sejongro. Seoul’s bulldozer’ Mayor Kim Hyon-ok was responsible for the trams’ demise. The cars were outdated, replacement + track repair was too costly, & the system disrupted traffic. ImageImageImageImage
Track was laid in the middle of the road, which made boarding a nuisance and forced all traffic to a standstill. In its final year, #tram ridership also dropped significantly even as the gov’t barred operators from increasing fares to maintain affordable service 4 passengers ImageImageImageImage

Good news is that it slides well. Bad news.. I don't actually understand how real KT4 works :D So, it has 3 free rotating joints (2 bogies and 1 between cars), but irl it always bends in the same way along a curve. Magic springs? Bogies are interconnected? 🤔 #YugoTrip #trams
I added some strong springs on joints and it seems to work ok. But it kinda bounces if you go slowly, which I don't think is how it works irl #YugoTrip #tramproblems
Props to @altfuture who managed to dig out this scan and solve the mystery. There seems to be a system of links (or pulleys, just called "stabilizers" in text) underneath the real KT4 which interconnects all 3 joints. Maybe a bit too complex for #YugoTrip 🤔 #TramProblems Image

Overcrowded #trams, impossible to board, at peak in south Brunswick, North Carlton, due to growing population and car congestion (pushing people to trams). Routes 1 & 6 on Lygon, 58 on Grantham seem to be the worst. Sydney Rd also affected. #SpringSt #publictransport #getonboard
Problem so bad you could run a few buses along the tramline at peak, to pick up those left behind by trams. Buses are cheaper. At least until you buy enough trams and power supply to fix this. Suspect passengers would prefer a bus to just waiting and hoping. Thoughts @yarratrams?
@yarratrams We shouldn't be throwing billions at gold-plated motorway projects like the North-East Link, WestGate Tunnel etc, until we've got a public transport system that works. Thanks @tessiselated for keeping this issue on the agenda.
