Yesterday I felt physically sick hearing that NHS England may be about to threaten supportive parents of trans children with ‘safeguarding protocols’ if they go outside the NHS for gender care. 1/14
We love our teen to bits. This is not what parents want for their children, constant despair that they may struggle to live their life. They tell us & demonstrate clearly every day that this is what they NEED. 2/14
Families often hold off affirming their child (6 years in our case) Yes, they worry it could be a phase & reassure them they’re perfect as they are but continuing to do this leads to distress & depression. It’s harmful & cruel to deny them their identity 3/14

If a post adolescent Trans young person can give consent, has both support at home and from their medical team, then there should be a route to gender surgeries where that young person wants and understands the treatments involved. I'm very glad WPATH SoC8 gives space for this.
For those who criticise this opinion, I'd reply that other people's medical care is none of your business. That these are personal decisions which are carefully considered by the people best placed to make them. Body autonomy is a human right.
There is a lot of evidence that Trans people delay their education, relationships, jobs. Those who are able to receive the appropriate healthcare for them & at the appropriate time, are able to more quickly reach their transition goals & stop delaying important life milestones.

When @Liztruss says three "new" gender clinics will shorten waiting lists by 1,600 patients by 2022, she is ignoring the fact that this is a tiny fraction of the 13,500 adults waiting & the more than 6000 children & young people waiting for a first appointment.

Also the clinics aren't new & they aren't addressing adolescent gender care, which has the greatest need.
Back of the envelope maths based upon the Governments uncited figures, assuming a single clinic can see an average of 533 service users from the wait list, the NHS would need 37 new clinics simply to clear the existing wait list, not accounting for the predicted annual increase.

I could tell you a joke about adolescent trans healthcare, but you're going to have to wait half a decade.
I'll send you a letter after 2 years to see if you still want to hear it. If you don't reply in writing then I'll assume you aren't interested.
Oh sorry, you've waited 5 years and want to hear the joke? You are just going to have to come back every month for another year or two so we can confirm you really, really want to hear it, and aren't just being influenced by something you read on Tumblr.

Cervical cancer is rare & treatable if caught through screening. Anyone with a Cervix is at risk. This includes Cis Women with a cervix, including those with neo vaginas for vaginal Agenesis, Trans men, Non Binary people with a cervix, & Trans women. See pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28217933/ ImageImage
For Trans women with a neo vagina, talk to your (trans aware) healthcare provider to discuss whether screening &/or cervical screening is appropriate. Literature recommends annual pelvic examinations for pelvic cancer; & regular cytological smear testing for those with a cervix.
Its suggested that Trans women have regular mammography screening from age 50, especially when additional risk factors are present (Fierze et al, 2019). The same study recommends annual prostrate screening from the age of 45.

Hormones are bad says JK Rowling. Using them is lazy. Heal your mind

In 2003 15% of cis women in UK age 45-68 took HRT
After studies linked HRT to increase breast cancer risk this fell to 5% by 2013
In 2015 @NICEComms found oestrogen only didn't have increased breast cancer risk Image
According to NICE around 1.5 million people could benefit from HRT to combat effects of menopause, yet 5 years on there remains poor uptake because of the health scare blown up by the media. Many GPs remain reluctant to prescribe HRT.
Evidence based access to HRT, & the patriarchal NHS restricting access, is a feminist AND a Trans Rights issue. Its the SAME MEDICATION used in Trans Health (Estrogen & Testosterone). Scaremongering access to HRT is anti science, anti medicine & anti feminist
