The EP's proposal, adopted in May 2022, proposes the creation of a common EU constituency elected via #transnationallists for #europeanparties and movements. Among others, it relies on a "group system" to increase diversity. So far so good. Or is it? 2/15
The EP's proposal includes three groups of Member States, roughly based on their demography, and illustrates what alternated rankings on an electoral #transnationallist might look like. Indeed, the list does look like a nicely diverse list. 3/15
German chancellor @OlafScholz just held a remarkable speech in Prague on the future of Europe. (1) It approves the idea of @EmmanuelMacron to create a European Political Community with prospective accession countries. (2) It suggest a switch from unanimity to majority voting. 1/6
(3) It prefers majority voting to enhanced cooperation. (4) As a step toward majority voting the constructive abstention should be introduced. (5) The internal market must be upgraded to a real circular European economy. (6) In terms of migration we need more legal migration. 2/6
(7) Germany wants a reform of the fiscal rules along the lines of the recent proposals. (8) Reference to SURE can be understood as introducing debt-financed funds with dedicated and earmarked spending plans. (9) The rule of law must be defended by all means available. 3/6

Many have endorsed TNLs as the way to make our elections more #European, from pro-#EU groups (@federalists, @EMInternational), to politicians (@EmmanuelMacron, @vonderleyen) & advocates (@jonworth, @alemannoEU, @AndrewDuffEU). They argue TNLs will bring a European dimension. 2/25
To be clear, the point of this thread is *not* to argue that TNLs will make our common election less European, simply that they will not remedy the election's core deficiency (that national parties are in control) and that, therefore, they are not the right way forward. 3/25
The Franco-German plan for the Conference on the #FutureofEurope focuses exclusively on #transnationallists and #spitzenkandidat, to the exclusion of the reform of #EuropeanParties and of the European #ElectoralLaw. It's missing the most important part.

#Transnationallists are, at best, a symbol; but they keep elections in the hands of national parties talking only to national electorates. A real federal Europe needs MEPs elected close to the citizens. And it needs real #EuropeanParties that talk directly to citizens. #toFedEU
Not to say "I told you so", but I did warn the @federalists that there would be little appetite for reform beyond #transnationallists from France/Germany. Now is the time to broaden the debate and ask for a more thorough reform! #toFedEU

The #FutureofEurope can only be made by parties addressing the whole of Europe. #Transnationallists will not create this, only give more seats to larger countries/parties, to the detriment of smaller ones. Proposals & campaigns would remain national. #Leyen @VoltEuropa
1/ Trying to follow what's going on in 🇪🇺 & #Brexit news feels like a full time job. And yet even against that backdrop, today feels pretty extraordinary. Some of the news has particular impact on me personally.
2/ First of all, this morning the proposed legal text on Brexit transition was released. So much for things not changing in transition - the text as it currently stands means 🇬🇧 👨💻 living in 🇪🇺 can no longer vote in the 2019 EP elections.
3/ A pretty major change, right from March 2019. 💥 goes my chance to vote for @janalbrecht @terryreintke et al as I did in 2014. 😡
