Residential school & genocide denialists argue that no bodies have ever been found.

A thread, because I'm tired of this. 1/

Tomorrow is the Day for #TruthandReconciliation – a day to acknowledge the histories and legacies of residential schools, and to honour the survivors, their families & communities. It aligns with #OrangeShirtDay, which carries a very important message: #EveryChildMatters. (1/4) Image
#AB’s government is committed to walking the path of reconciliation together with Indigenous peoples. Commemorating the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of this process. (2/4)
Now is a time for us to learn more about the residential school system and to continue our work toward reconciliation. I invite all #AbEd schools to participate in activities led by the @NCTR_UM and the AB Regional Consortia #ARPDC. (3/4)

Bitcoin champion, convoy enthusiast and walking climate disaster Pierre Poilievre is officially the new leader of the "Conservative" Party of Canada. I'm told I should be *very* afraid he'll become the Prime Minster. I'm not. I don't think he has a hope in hell 🧵#cdnpoli Image
People have short memories and the (ongoing) pandemic feels like a lifetime ago which is why Canadians may need reminding what "Conservative" leadership would have looked like during that time had Polly been PM. No CERB. No nothing. You're on your own. /2
Might as well nip this in the bud: I'm not AT ALL advising anybody "let their guard down". I think this generation of "Conservatives" need the electoral reckoning of their entire existence so all future generations know not to float this extremist garbage at Canadians. /3

I've read the stories describing the apology tour of Pope Francis. On Monday after his first visit near Edmonton I decided to comment after the saga had unfolded. It was an emotional week for so many!
1/ #PopeFrancis #Canada #residentialschools #truthandreconciliation
We heard apologies, pleading forgiveness, more apologies, recognition of "cultural destruction" and finally on the flight home #PopeFrancis said "yes, it was a genocide, yes, yes, clearly. You can say that I said it was a genocide."

The genocide was justified by the #DoctrineOfDiscovery & while #PopeFrancis, #CatholicChurch, & Crown gov'ts are reluctant to rescind it, the actions I witnessed against the #Wetsuweten in their own territory are empowered by the Doctrine.

So, get comfy, this is going to be long. But it is very important. #cdnpoli #RoeVWade #TruthAndReconciliation

I am going to try to work through this thought process, and I welcome correction from voices I respect...
@ironbow I especially want your take on this.
I am a Canadian woman. I have stood up for the rights of women and girls all my life. I also have sought to be an ally for Indigenous issues and BLM and the LGBTQ2+ community. Everyone has rights. Whether they are recognized or not.
When Roe V Wade was overturned 2 days ago, I felt it deeply. Yes, that is in the US, and so far, only about half the states have a ban. But it is robbing women of their human rights. I felt that deeply for them, and also

1. Yesterday, I had an experience online, that left me feeling very small.

September 30th, was the very first #NationalDayforTruthandReconciliation, and I'm pretty sure the overwhelming majority of us can agree that #CdnMediaFailed us by playing "Where's Waldo-Trudo?".
2. And IMHO, this unfortunate taking away of the platform from the Indigenous community was made possible, in part surprising less meticulous than usual standard planning, communications, and expectations management by the PMO.
3. As a Canadian who wants things to get better, I was upset at the sloppiness as it left an opening for #CdnMedia to be as lazy as it could possibly be, and not make an effort to promote Indigenous voices on the day.

#TruthAndReconciliation is marketing-as is #OrangeShirtDay2021 & holiday for white people on stolen land. Reconciliation would be giving land back. EuroAmerican destroys everything in path. #Indigenous peoples rep. less than 5% of pop. -yet support approx. 80% all #biodiversity.
#TruthBeforeReconciliation would be criminal charges against those responsible for res. schools & dead children. "However, as w/ any criminal case, the charges would be laid by the Crown—which would essentially amount to the govt putting itself on trial."

I am Mohawk.

On this day of #TruthAndReconciliation and #OrangeShirtDay ...

Let me tell you how my family has been affected by #ResidentialSchools.
My Mohawk grandmother, my Tota was sent forcibly to #ResidentialSchool.

My great-grandmother Minnie (Who did not speak English) was told that she could not have her daughters back.

Undeterred, she went back in the middle of the night and helped her daughters to escape.
I am proud of this blood running through my veins, my great tota Minnie and my tota are warriors.

But the story doesn't end there.

For the rest of my life, my tota was terrified.

As Canada marks the first National Day for #TruthAndReconciliation, #TheDecibel looks at its origin in #OrangeShirtDay, and explore how to meaningfully measure progress toward reconciliation.

tgam.ca/3ilMZQo
One way to measure progress is the ‘reconciliation barometer,’ developed by Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers.

theglobeandmail.com/canada/article…
🎧 @starzyklab, principal investigator on the project, and @rymoran, a collaborator, join #TheDecibel to help explain what exactly the project is measuring, and how this gauge can be used to inform the conversation around reconciliation.

Today is National Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada.

I hope everyone will use this day as an opportunity to reflect and consider how they can contribute to meaningful and lasting reconciliation. We can all have a hand in this effort. #TruthAndReconciliation
I woke up early this morning. I’ve been thinking about what I’ve learned in recent years about Canada’s colonial history. It’s a horrific one. It’s not some distant thing. The last residential school closed during my lifetime. The impacts are still felt. #TruthAndReconciliation
The individual and collective trauma inflicted upon indigenous people is horrifying, terrifying, shameful. It is multi-generational. Every indigenous person we know is a survivor, the child of a survivor, or the grand-child of a survivor. #TruthAndReconciliation

The 3-day finale of #yyccc 2017-2021 was lit!!! It’s hard to believe the writers were able to get so many great things resolved. Also, so many cool things have been set up for the next show: 2021-2025 (which will start filming on Oct 18). Here’s my recap of the highlights: 1/24
The finale opened w emotion: 1) #yyc-based members of the #TokyoOlympics/#TokyoParalympics #teamcanada were honored. 2) tributes to the retiring members of #yyccc, @DruhFarrell @EWoolleyWard8 @ChahalGeorge @Ward4Ward1 @CouncillorKeats & @nenshi, induced tears & good vibes. 2/24

1/ Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, & soon #TruthAndReconciliation day, so lets talk about Indigenous Suicide.

Most organizations will talk about the frequency of white suicide, but, male or female, youth Indigenous suicides are as/more common and poorly discussed.
2/ In the US, Indigenous suicide in BOYS & YOUNG MEN is as common as the well-discussed "middle age white men" group, and late in life we see the escalation of white suicide.

In women, INDENGENOUS GIRLS and YOUNG WOMEN have as high a suicide rate as the middle age white peak. ImageImage
3/ In Canada, Indigenous suicide is THREEFOLD more common than non-Indigenous suicide. And for Inuit, NINEFOLD. For Inuit men in Inuit Nunangat, the risk is THIRTYFOLD higher in the young adult age group. ImageImageImage

Let's use July 1st in 🇨🇦 to address the systems that we are part of that continue to do harm to indigenous peoples. There are concrete opportunities to do better. #TruthAndReconciliation shows us clear steps. For those other HCWs, here are the 7️⃣ steps for health.
A 🧵
1️⃣Recognize The current state of Aboriginal health is a direct result of previous Canadian government policies, including residential schools. Recognize and implement the health-care rights of Aboriginal people
2️⃣Government w/ Aboriginal peoples, establish goals to close gaps in health outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities (e.g. infant mortality, maternal health, suicide, mental health, addictions, life expectancy, birth rates, infant and child health issues, etc.)

Residential schools were never schools. Nor are they part of this country’s colonial history. The traumas and settler institutions continue to impact our Indigenous cousins today. My heart aches for the children, culture, and community lost. #cowessess cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
This genocide is inextricably linked to the life I enjoy as a settler on Treaty 4 Territory and that is one of the truths that I grapple with as an uninvited guest on this land. Educating myself and understanding these truths is part of my journey towards #TruthAndReconciliation
My thoughts are with @cadmusd, the #CowessessFirstNation community, and Indigenous people across Turtle Island who have lived these truths that we as settlers are only now beginning to acknowledge. I stand in solidarity and am committed to meaningful action beyond my words today.

Whole world knows Canada's shame today. Cynical political leaders will call for a "blue ribbon panel" to "get to the bottom of this" so it sounds like they're doing something. The panel'll be under-funded & ignored, which is fine because the WORK HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE #cdnpoli
The work's already been done, 94 #CallsToAction made & this work has been largely ignored by Canadians & its leaders. As it relates to Missing Children & Burial Information there are 6 very specific, eminently sensible & humane recommendations #cdnpoli /2 trc.ca/assets/pdf/Cal…
#71 is just calling for the data we already know exists to be forwarded to the appropriate agency, that it can no longer remain stubbornly sat on by repeated generations of bad government actors who would prefer to keep hidden the exact details of one of Canada's worst secrets /3
