Ok, can my fellow #Millennials collectively admit that the American School system FAILED US ALL by not teaching us about the #TulsaRaceMassacre when we were coming up?

It's really messed up.
I had to learn about Tulsa on my own, in my late 20s--despite attending a well-funded Public School system đź‘€

...Then there's the additional 11 years of Post-Graduate Education during which I never heard a peep about Tulsa đź‘€
That's really bad.

Why? Because we LEGITIMATELY cannot have a coherent conversation about the current state of race relations in America if you do not understand what happened at Tulsa.

...It's a critical piece of the picture.

“The massacre was actively covered up in the white community in Tulsa for nearly a half century. Researchers who tried to work on this as late as the early 1970s had their lives & careers threatened.”

“in the 1970s I discovered that official National Guard reports & documents were all missing…In the week following the massacre, the chief of police ordered his officers to go to all the photography studios & confiscate all the pictures.”

Sad FACT–
Like the coverup crowd of the 1/6/2021 insurrection, and after defeating the Democrats’ Cox/FDR ticket in 1920, the #TulsaMassacre crowd thought that the GOP’s POTUS Harding & his AG Daugherty would never punish anyone. They were right.

Today is 100 years since the #TulsaMassacre, when a white mob ravaged the Black community of Greenwood, killing hundreds of Black people.

The city commission offered only $100,000 each.

On May 31, 1921, a white mob attacked "Black Wall Street" in Tulsa, killing hundreds of Black people and burning over 1,400 homes and businesses.

The attack was depicted in HBO's "Watchmen" — but unlike the show, no reparations were paid in real life.

One aspect of the #TulsaMassacre that seems to get overlooked in the orgy of violence is that there were aircraft literally firebombing the black neighborhoods. And a bit of digging turned up names- the pilots were Air Service veterans flying surplus Curtiss JN-4 "Jennies". 1/
The Feb 1, 1920 edition of the Tulsa Tribune had a brief blurb about a "local oilman" who purchased 447 aircraft (!!!) at a cost of $2,500,000... that's 33.3 MILLION dollars in today's money. What was he going to do with them? Well, fast forward to May 1. 2/
It's May Day, and the nation appeared to be in the grip of the first "Red Panic", with national strikes proposed by the I.W.W. Recall, the Communist Revolution in Russia had completely upset the balance of power in 1917/18, and postwar Germany was in immense turmoil 2/

46.01/ Week Forty-six, May 29-June 4 2021, begins here.

Week 45 below:
46.02/ Attempting the "Not starting every email/tweet with the word 'so' challenge." This is comes after "Not starting every etc with 'well'"

I understand this is common for academics. In my observation: "well" is to state your hypothesis, "so" the next step in analysis.
46.03/ I just spent hours writing a thread and for some reason the screen skipped and I lost everything. It's hard to explain how destructive this is. First time it's happened and now I will know to continuously back up writing in a side document. But I'm mildly perturbed.

1)The #TulsaMassacre happened in Lessie’s life. An aspect of Critical Race Theory is discussing resource disparity (White men hegemony over most resources in the US). When Black people create resources for ourselves many in power have historically tried to take them away.
2)Voting Rights is an example of that. They’re a way for us to access power, to access representatives that work w/us, & to access resources. This is why Republicans are trying to block our path to the ballot box, they want to control power and resources. brennancenter.org/our-work/resea…
3)The GOP are trying to block #CriticalRaceTheory and #1619Project because when the public begins to analyze racial disparities and connect it how law and policy operate in the United States then people understand accountability is needed. Republicans want nothing to do w/that.

This is what white supremacy leads to: the destruction of Black lives and Black wealth, the impact of which reverberates a century after the #TulsaMassacre

Let us never forget. washingtonpost.com/business/2021/…

1/ A conservative friend of mine argued at various times and in different contexts (including racial preferences or affirmative action), that slavery ended in 1865, he had nothing to do with it, so why don't African-Americans "just get over it." #RaceMatters
2/ Yes, slavery ended in 1865 and while it contributed greatly to the wealth of white America, African-Americans were given nothing in return as the government reneged on its promise of 40 acres and a mule after the end of the Civil War. #RaceMatters pbs.org/wnet/african-a…
3/ Compare this to the Homestead Act of 1866 which transferred an area of land in the west the size of CA and TX (10% of all US land) to whites who need only improve it for 5 years and file a deed. aeon.co/ideas/land-and… #RaceMatters

When @RealDonaldTrump announced he would be holding a campaign rally on June 19 in #Tulsa, #Oklahoma, there was immediate backlash. #Juneteenth nbcnews.com/politics/congr…
Not only had the president chosen #Juneteenth - a day celebrating freedom and recognizing the resilience of enslaved people - but he also chose the city where a mob of white supremacists terrorized and killed Black people, destroying #BlackWallStreet in the 1921 #TulsaMassacre.
As our nation grapples with recent police killings of Black people and calls to address systemic racism and white supremacy culture in our society, @RealDonaldTrump was criticized for co-opting historically significant spaces for Black people for himself.

Can you imagine being that dedicated to preserving the legacy of slavery, racism, and white supremacy that you'd risk throwing our armed forces into chaos in order to do it?
And this man has the audacity to hold a rally in Tulsa, the site of one of the most infamous race-based massacres in America, on the day black people commemorate emancipation.

If he were intentionally trying to fan the flames of racial animus, he couldn't be doing a better job.

1/6 President Trump has chosen to relaunch his re-election campaign at a time and place that are heavy with racial symbolism – much like Ronald Reagan did in 1980.

2/6 Reagan began his campaign with a speech on “state’s rights” outside Philadelphia, MS. It was there, in 1964, that three men registering black voters were murdered by white supremacists. 41 years later, a former KKK member was convicted of manslaughter in the case. Image
3/6 Amid tensions over the killings of black men, Trump plans a rally June 19 in Tulsa, OK where, in 1921, there were days of riots as white mobs attacked black citizens, burning their businesses and churches. Image

President Trump is holding a rally in Tulsa on #Juneteenth — the anniversary of when slavery was fully abolished.

Tulsa is the site of the #TulsaMassacre, which saw a white mob kill hundreds of Black people in 1921. It was largely ignored by U.S. history books and newspapers. Image
The 1921 #TulsaMassacre was one of the worst acts of racial violence in U.S. history, killing approximately 300 Black people.

Newspapers practically ignored it.
President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but it took over 2 more years more slavery to be fully abolished.

That date is celebrated as #Juneteenth.

Today marks the 99th anniversary of the #TulsaMassacre. 400+ years of severe trauma. washingtonpost.com/history/2020/0…
We keep rising, only to be met with more trauma inflicted by the nation built by traumatizing us. It’s hard to see a nonviolent way, but it is there, focused on what can be when history is faced, when true peace (which includes justice) is the goal...
...and when we rise up with determination that we will no longer be destroyed, not even by self-destruction. Rest in power to our people who died by racist massacre.
