OK, hello and let's go as I #livetweet during a watch of ep 1 of #PrehistoricPlanet! I'll try and keep everything in the same thread. This is the COASTS ep - 1 of 5 - that will be streaming one a day on @AppleTVPlus ... Here we go!
Like all eps, Coasts was years in preparation and a huge team are behind its completion. I'll mostly be tweeting about science and not ppl but I will be mentioning some key individuals... #PrehistoricPlanet
The ep starts with a swimming #Trex. T. rex lived north to South east to west, across Laramidia (western N America) and was in near-coast environments in many places. Plus ... like just about ALL animals.. it was surely a great swimmer. We WANTED to show something new, and...

Taronga Wildlife Hospital cares for rescued marine turtles, prior to their release back to the wild. Preliminary satellite tracking data from rehabilitated #turtles indicate certain sites along the #NSW coast may be important foraging & resting grounds. #ScienceWeek
Taronga scientists Dr Jo Day & Dr Phoebe Meagher are working in collaboration with Bioplatforms Australia, Griffith Uni, Dolphin Marine Conservation Park, Australian Seabird Rescue, Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters, to understand marine #turtle movement & habitat use in #NSW
The team are currently identifying the nesting stock origin of green #turtles found in NSW waters using #DNA. Stable isotope analysis then identifies key foraging sites in #NSW. Collectively, their collaborative #science informs direct #ConservationManagement.
Bellinger river snapping #turtles are a great example of Taronga’s collaborative work on pathogen discovery and commitment to #conservation. #SavingOurSpecies #WildlifeHealth #ScienceWeek #reptiles
When conservation-savvy locals raised the alarm that something was wrong with the #turtles in the Bellinger river, multiple agencies were there to help, including the ARWH who were responsible for finding out what was making these animals sick.

**NEW PAPER ALERT** 'Road effect mitigation promotes connectivity and reduces mortality at the population level'. #turtles #snakes #amphibians #roadecology @OntarioParks @PresquilePP
Road mortality is a major threat to reptile and amphibian populations. Using a 6-year paired BACI design, we tested if roadside fencing and tunnels beneath the road would reduce road mortality rates of reptiles and amphibians.
We found that road mortality was reduced for turtles and amphibians compared to our control site- great! However, we found no effect of the mitigation on snake mortality - not good!

The Forest and Environment Department in Andhra Pradesh has released over 350 baby marine #turtles into the sea in #Visakhapatnam on March 24.
Over 50,000 eggs were collected in Visakhapatnam, out of which 5000 hatchlings have been released so far, reported Deccan Herald.
The survival of ancient marine turtles is in danger today due to human activities. In 2020, the United Nations member states started long-awaited talks on a treaty that would regulate the high seas.

SUCCESS! Painted #turtles & 2 amorous common snapping turtles is our traps! Students took the photos, will post when they share.
Let’s just say that’s the biggest common snapper I’ve had to coax out of a hoop net (~35 lbs, head as big as my fist!) 😅😬

Me and the family went to ZSL #LondonZoo today, had a great time and saw all the #animals. Here's a short thread. Some highlights: Western lowland gorilla, Sumatran tiger, Komodo dragon, Galapagos giant tortoise...
Just a few of the literally 100s of birds at #LondonZoo: Woolly-necked stork, Northern crested caracaras (big, semi-terrestrial American falcons) and Red and yellow barbet. Barbets are members of the woodpecker group; some are close kin of toucans. #birds #animals #zoos

My current vote: uncertain leaning towards being against it.
Primarily bc I can't always confirm where the animals are sourced from. Are they farmed (perhaps the case for bull #frogs but prob not for other #amphibians or for non- #turtles )? If not, is take sustainable?

Update: I asked & Carolina responded! They source their Ambystoma from the bait industry.
