Thread about some differences and limitations that might surprise or trip up folks trying out #Mastodon. I'm no expert, just sharing info gleaned from reading up a bit and playing with it for a few days - hopefully can shorten learning curve for a few folk on the #TwitterExodus
In short, if you are hoping for a drop-in, like-for-like replacement that works just like Twitter, it's not that, despite the superficial similarity. Most important, the way posts propagate, and who may be able to find them, is totally different to what twitter users are used to.
Your instance (the server you joined) hosts toots from you and its other members. But you can follow people on other instances, and they can follow you, and you will see each others' posts. Hence the suggestion "it doesn't matter which instance you join". Well, only sort of...

First: I love Twitter and I am sad. I go reluctantly after 12 years. Twitter is one of the reasons I started the Thesiswhisperer blog. It showed me to the range of things other people were doing in terms of blogging, videos, podcasts in the education space. It inspired me 🧵2/
I have more than 50K followers. In a university context, the number drew interest from 'higher ups' to what I was doing. I could talk to, and about, management about things that bothered me. My 'social stats' gave my opinion weight. This is a form of power. Hard to give up 🧵/4

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I wish this wasn’t happening but the choice has been made for us. We were sold out and I now refuse to countenance giving this Musk-poisoned company my free labour/content. Let’s all catch up over on Mastodon.

Some further thoughts on my Mastodon experience: it has made me step back and reevaluate how social media should operate. We built entire communities on here but were ultimately treated like a product for trade. It does not have to be like this.
