1/ A reflection about @timnitGebru's recent commenc. speech at @UCBerkeley! I've known her for 5 years now. My 1st encounter was when we met to feature her as a guest on my TV show. Our convo was great. I've a respect for her. She is someone with a solid academic/prof credential
2/ She is fighting to create an equitable digital future by ensuring AI won’t go astray. When our sisters didn’t have someone to look up to who looks/speaks like them, I was happy to have @timnitGebru on my show. I'll always be open for her to come inspire the next gen in #STEM.
3/ Her journey has been inspiring & the equity of black women in STEM was/is so important to me that I also featured her in the book that I've authored & published in 2018 so that many could follow in her footsteps. I also defended her publicly during her departure from Google.

My mom & dad bought their first house in #PaloAlto for about $16,000. At the time, it cost about 5 cents per hour to park downtown. Today, that same house would cost ~$3 million & it’s free to park downtown.

We have completely solved our affordable housing problem–for our cars🧵
In 2019, surveyors counted 313 homeless people in #PaloAlto, up 99% from 2013. They found no homeless cars.

How did #PaloAlto become a city of expensive housing and free parking? In 1951, Palo Alto adopted a new zoning ordinance. The new law limited housing and required parking.

Excited to share our pre-print on optimizing #COVID19 control with asymptomatic surveillance testing, an inspiring collaboration with the #UCBerkeley SARS-CoV-2 testing lab @igisci.

We built a model of #COVID19 dynamics in a university environment to explore the efficacy of behavior- and surveillance testing-based NPIs—and to advise our own campus lab on optimal use of testing resources

As has been shown previously by @morde, we demonstrate the effectiveness of group size limits to deter superspreading, assuming a negative binomial R0. The group size limit of 12 imposed by the Berkeley Public Health Dept is a good one; limits of 50+ are not effective at all

Ann Coulter’s speech at #WheelerHall in UC Berkeley had gathered a large crowd to block the entrance to the venue as told to the people as they began marching around.
Campus police have detained some protestors. Chants erupt to “let them go.”
California Highway Police are now standing in front of Wheeler Hall’s entrance.

Time traveling to 1948 to discuss Edward C. Tolman's "Cognitive Maps in Rats and Men" for my last and final thread for @kwassum's course on instrumental conditioning. JMO, Tolman was ahead of his time, thumbed his nose at McCarthyism, and was a Learning Theorist bad@ss. #scicomm
In his studies of learning in rats, Tolman sought to demonstrate that the mechanisms by which rats (and humans) learn to maneuver through the world involve robust, flexible, autonomous and selective mechanisms that form a cognitive-like map in the brain.
Tolman's ideology was quite different than the rival theory of the day that favored a stimulus-response (S-R) reinforcement-driven view where learning was an automatic response triggered by environmental stimuli. (Tolman pictured all by his onesies on the right 👇).
