The #BonnClimateConference failed once again to address the key drivers of the #ClimateCrisis [= #FossilFuels]. Delay is the new Denialism.
A 🧵on the #FalseSolutions increasingly being pushed in the @UNFCCC negotiations: #CCS #CDR & #geoengineering are dangerous distractions!

Science is crystal clear, the only way to meaningfully reduce emissions is a rapid, equitable, full & funded phase-out of ALL fossil fuels. In this essential #JustTransition, there's is NO space for dangerous distractions such as #CCS or #CarbonRemoval.

Today we publish the 1st edition of the "State of Carbon Dioxide Removal" report, a global assessment of the current #StateofCDR, and the gap we need to close to achieve the Paris temperature goal.
Full report➡️stateofcdr.org
An ongoing 🧵
[1]
This report compiles a first estimate of the total CDR being deployed (2 GtCO2/yr).
Almost all comes from "conventional" CDR on land, via afforestation, reforestation & forest management.
"Novel" methods don’t contribute much yet.
#StateofCDR
[2]
We provide a calculation of total gross CDR in #IPCC-assessed pathways to keep warming below 1.5C and 2C, including all methods. All pathways involve substantial cumulative CDR volumes (450-1100 GtCO2 by 2100) - in addition to immediate & deep emissions reductions

The @UN #HLEGReport on Net-zero Emissions Committments is out
The problem though: #IPCC 1.5C pathways don't reach net zero GHG emissions by "2050 or sooner", but by the end of the century. The famous "net zero by 2050" (better "early 2050s) is CO2 only
un.org/en/climatechan…
1/
You might be in disbelief, but have a look at the #IPCC AR6 WG3 Summary for Policymakers, Table SPM.2:
For 1.5C with no or limited overshoot (category C1), pathways reach net-zero CO2 in 2050-2055, but net-zero GHG in 2095-2100
ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg3…
2/n
The difference between net-zero CO2 and net-zero GHG can be explained by the dominant role of non-CO2 GHGs (methane, nitrous oxide, f-gases) in residual emissions and the dominant role of CO2 in removals

Where is geoengineering creeping into climate negotiations? Our latest briefing explores these spaces and the narratives that support false solutions.

Read some of our demands to get #GeoEngineering out and bring real solutions in to #COP27 & #UNFCCC:
Real actions & real solutions are needed to keep global temp rise below 1.5C. The UNFCCC must focus on ensuring the deep and rapid reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases, not on ways to mask or compensate for continued emissions such as carbon markets & geoengineering.
None of the geoengineering technologies proposed will reduce emissions or address any of the root causes of climate change. Promoting carbon removals through geoengineering delays and distracts from the rapid reduction of emissions that the world needs.

This is a bold headline. Great to see US acknowledging the need for #LossAndDamage finance. But the crux of the matter is the actual provision of funds, to which the US remains staunchly opposed. msn.com/en-us/news/wor…
Key line: "US negotiators at next month’s UN climate summit in Egypt are discouraging any explicit push for new aid or funding." Instead, they want to discuss "financial arrangements" framing that doesn't imply an actual obligation of developed countries to provide money.
"Financial arrangements" could mean insurance schemes like the Global Shield or other arrangements outside the #UNFCCC. These are not a replacement for direct provision of funding. (btw we did a whole paper 5 yrs ago on why insurance for L&D doesn't work: actionaid.org/publications/2…)

The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change @SRclimatechange has just dropped an *amaze-balls* report to the UN General Assembly, starting later this month. Governments will have to respond.
documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/…
We are being confronted with an enormous climate change crisis of catastrophic proportions. It is happening now.

The result of a catastrophically inadequate response from historical emitters / developed countries.
The members of the Group of 20 account for 78% of emissions over the past decade. Noting: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea and USA are falling short

By contrast, the 55 most vulnerable economies have lost over half their economic growth potential owing to the #climatecrisis.

➡️Only 6 out of 97 scenarios in the #IPCC #AR6 WG3 category C1 ('no to limited overshoot') never cross 1.5C
➡️91 out of 97 cross 1.5C temporarily, and then go back to 1.5°C by 2100

If you read the Summary for Policymakers of IPCC AR6 WG1 (Aug. 2021), this cannot come as surprise
Below the numbers from #IPCC #AR6 WG1. Not sure if this knowledge was conciously included in "keeping 1.5C alive and within reach" messaging around #COP26.
'Overshoot' pathways (= exceedance & return) didn't make it onto the high-level #UNFCCC agenda yet
ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1…
The overshoot logic might also a little bit hard to detect in this #IPCC #AR6 WG1 SPM figure. That's because overshoot is quite small (0.1°C) for SSP1-1.9, while at the same time all standard RCP levels (1.9-8.5) are shown in one figure

Thread ⬇️

Media, and especially UK media, this goes to you. We often seek simple terms to describe climate COPs. And we have milestone COPs and, well, less milestone ones. For me, this was first and foremost a 'Media COP'. And it was not a milestone COP. It was never mean to be. (see next)
I have been to COPs since 2008 and I do not recall a single one where media would have been given so much access to plenary. Informal stocktaking plenaries in the final days were broadcasted live and became partly a political theatre. In between... (continued)
... cameras crowded around huddling delegates. A live broadcast showed US, Chinese and other delegates hashing out final details of the texts. The President got emotional, which then made the evening news.

Why is this important? Because it helps understand this COP. (cont'd)

Already seeing articles blaming India for #COP26 "phase down" instead of "out" coal language. REALLY important to see full context here. The problem is not India; the problem is the US & rich countries refusing to couch fossil fuel phaseout in the context of global equity. 🧵
The text targets "unabated coal power and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies" which leaves GIANT loopholes for CCS (and "efficient" FF subsidies) as well as leaving out oil & gas entirely. India earlier suggested that it address ALL fossil fuels in an equitable manner. #COP26
But an equitable fossil fuel phaseout would place most of the burden squarely on the US and rich countries, as we show in this year's CSO Equity Review report. This would be unacceptable to Biden administration negotiators. civilsocietyreview.org #COP26

How will climate negotiators deal with diminishing carbon budget for 1.5C?
Some thoughts from our recent @OneEarth_CP paper "#UNFCCC must confront the political economy of net-negative emissions"
Now available #OpenAccess for 2 months
cell.com/one-earth/full… #COP26
(1/n)
Basic problem is quite easy to understand. We're very close to 1.5C, and even if you think it's still possible to stay within the remaining carbon budget (<500 Gt), this would mean that every country needs to reach net zero pretty soon.

Remarkable framing shift ahead of #COP26

While "close to 1.5C" is politically more plausible than "limit to 1.5C", it's quite ambiguous, similarly to already established "well below 2C"

Is this the new language incorporating (initial) overshoot of 1.5C?

politico.eu/article/why-th…
Some background on #IPCC WG1 projections for threshold 1.5C crossing times under different scenarios, explained by @hausfath for @CarbonBrief
carbonbrief.org/analysis-what-…
"Constructive ambiguity" is a useful tool to reach agreement under #UNFCCC. But problematic that #ParisAgreement doesn't exclude or at least sets clear constraints for 1.5C overshoot. Creates way too much flexibility

Good that Fridays for Future activists start dealing more and more with the nitty-gritty details of EU #climate policymaking. But with several factual errors and questionable claims in this article, they are risking their credibility.
A short thread [1/n] #EUClimateLaw
You can of course criticize EU #climate policy for not being ambitious enough, but claiming that "the EU is cheating with numbers" needs to be backed up with very strong arguments.
medium.com/@GretaThunberg…
[2/n] #EUClimateLaw
Let's start with FFF authors' core argument that EU is cheating because the 55% are counted from 1990 onwards not from 2018
The EU has never claimed otherwise. 1990 has always been the base year for EU headline #climate targets (as for many others in #UNFCCC)

We are reacting to the #UNFCCC text and stocktake now.
It would be a betrayal of people around the world, suffering from the impacts & those that are calling for action. The 🇨🇱presidency had 1 job, protect the integrity of the Paris agreement & not allow it to be torn apart by cynicism & greed. Right now it is failing. @climatemorgan
@mohadow: At the very least, we want to see revived the enhancements to the NDCs. If that doesn't come through, it will have failed. The second thing that is most important for this process is that we don't undermine the environmental integrity of the deal.
