+Gomez at USCCB20:

Chairman of committees have expressed concern in the wake of the election.
Gomez:

We are facing a unique moment in our history. The president-elect professes the Catholic faith-- he has given us reason to think he will support some good policies, but also some that are at odds with our preeminent priority of the elimination of abortion.
+Gomez:

Those policies present challenges to the common good and confusion to the Catholic faithful.

This is a difficult and complex situation. Initiating a working group to address this. Will provide more information shortly

+Gomez at USCCB: Msgr Bransfield has served the USCCB generously for 13 years. He has been General Secretary and other positions. Our heartfelt thanks.
Msgr. Bransfield:
A couple of years ago, my cell phone rang and it Fr. Steve Dougherty. He had been my pastor, a seminary professor, and was my friend.

#USCCB20
Msgr. Bransfield:

I was late, and didn't know if I should answer, I didn't have time. Why did I answer?
"Hi Steve, how are you?"
"Brian, I'm dying."

My body stopped, my mind froze. The raw immediacy of those words struck hard.

At #USCCB20, bishops will now discuss racism.

+Fabre, chair of ad hoc committee against racism, will initiate discussion.
Yesterday, I spelled His Excellency's name incorrectly, several times. I apologize to His Excellency, and to you, dear reader.

The proper spelling is Shelton Fabre.
+Fabre: Racially-related events of the last summer confirm the truth of "Open Wide Our Hearts," the USCCB's 2018 pastoral letter on racism.

Here’s an idea: what if every Churchman who ever got a check from McCarrick just said when, for how much, and why.

Who will be willing to get the ball rolling?

#transparency #usccb20
I’ll go first:

I’ve never gotten money from McCarrick.

Bishops I’ve worked for have given me small gifts at Christmas, probably less than $1000 altogether, in cash.

Bishops have given small cash gifts before I was a journalist if I helped with a project. Again, less than 1k.
I can think of times when bishops have picked up the check for meals or drinks. Never more than $100.

I think that’s all I got on “money received from bishops apart from a paycheck.”

Whose next?

#USCCB20 press conference.

Q for +Favre:
Will committee against racism stop being ad hoc at some point, and become an ordinary committee? What do you think of the idea presented by +Stowe that outside funding could impact the work of USCCB committees.
+Favre:
Now it is a practical matter that the committee is ad hoc because of conference structure. I think in 2023 or so, the committee will be integrated into the USCCB structure.

WRT to funding, I don't necessarily share all of +Stowe's concerns
+Q (from Fr. Reese) to +Gomez:
Can you give assurance that seminarians today are being protected from sexual harassment by those in authority? What structures protect them?

The strategic plan takes two years to develop. It guides how the conference will spend resources, and what staffers and committees will be up to.

at #USCCB20, bishops will now discuss McCarrick Report.

Reminder: My tweets are summaries, not direct quotes, unless I put something in quotation marks.
+Gomez:

How are we to respond to the McCarrick Report? Recalls 2019 retreat of US bishops preached by Fr. Cantelamessa.

#USCCB20.
+Gomez:

Pope Francis ensured McCarrick Report was "thorough and detailed." It will take time to reflect upon it.

Not the result of a single failure, but many failures, rooted in clericalism.

How might we rethink our relationships?

Deb Amato, Chair of the National Advisory Council, will now give a report. Report was pre-recorded BEFORE the release of McCarrick Report.

So the report wont include that.

#USCCB20
National Advisory Council is a body of laity, clerics, and religious who consult on the mission and work of the USCCB.

Full disclosure: I served a term on the NAC.
Amato:

Primary purpose of the NAC is to respond to the action items being considered by USCCB Admin Committee action items using profile voting.

NAC members can also present their own resolutions for the admin committee to consider.

Archbishop Christopher Pierre will now address the @USCCB. Pierre is apostolic nuncio, or pope's diplomatic representative to the US, who is involved in both ecclesiastical and civil matters.

#USCCB20.
Before that, bishops asked to comment on agenda before it is formally approved.

They can use the Zoom "raise hand" feature.

No bishops raise hands. Bishops vote to approve agenda.

+Burbidge and +Fischer will be the "tellers" or vote counters for #USCCB20.

+Schnurr will be parliamentarian. He usually is. He knows Robert's Rules pretty well, and sometimes there are parliamentary procedure questions during these meetings.
