The #U4U #unitingforukraine program is riddled with administrative issues. We navigated the process to the border relatively smoothly (considering @USCIS is generally opaque). However, at the border @CBP had not yet been informed as to the process.
The @JoeBiden announcement and @DHSgov have clearly indicated that this is a #humanitarianparole program for #Ukrainian citizens. However, at the border, @CBP claimed internal guidence said @B2 travel visa OR Humanitarian Parole.
They granted Max the B2. We are delighted he is safe here with us. However, the differences between B2 and humanitarian parole are HUGE. The B2 allows for only 6 months, then he must return. #RussiaUkraineWar may last longer. @JoeBiden promised 2 years of Humanitarian Parole.

@SenatorLeahy @USCIS Thanks Senator. As a legal immigrant who came here on a dependent visa, the H4 work permit was my channel to contribute to the US economy. Already equipped with a STEM undergrad degree, I went on to pursue an MBA at BU and graduated this yr with a job..CONT
@SenatorLeahy @USCIS As luck would have it, my permit went for a renewal this year. I wasn't too worried, up until recently, when #USCIS decided to systemically delay all renewals. I had to forcefully quit my job 2 weeks ago, and resort back to my shackles..
@SenatorLeahy @USCIS Not many understand the plight of legal immigrants qnd only treat them as objects, often forgetting that these are REAL lives with the same ambitions as anyone else..your letter just made me feel good, for once. Thanks

Let me share a true 'horror story' of #academia titled #STEMOPT. Imagine being an #internationalstudent in a #globapandemic #COVID19 and finishing a #PhD while navigating this process. read on... Image
In layman terms OPT from #USCIS is required for all #internationalstudents in Masters' and PhD programs to legally work in the US after completing the degree. My application got approved last week amidst the possibility that new OPT approvals might be cancelled for the year. sigh Image
I had to a) give up a dream #postdoc @UTAustin and apologize for it. b) Survive 4 months without financial support waiting 2.5 months. c) Run a household of 2 (wife, a software engineer unable to work in US due to visa restrictions) and finish requirements for my #PhD.

Not that anyone asked me, but here's how the #immigration system should deal w/#covid19:

--suspend all #immigrationcourt
--suspend all #USCIS interviews
--automatically extend all ICE check-in 6 months
--release all ICE detainees

None of this is worth the risk. None of it.
This is maybe the only upside to having #immigrationcourts not be Constitutional judicial bodies under Article III: they're optional. They are not such an essential part of government that they need to remain operational during a pandemic.

They're just not.
Call me alarmist, but there's no precaution too extreme for what New England is facing right now and we all should have started cutting non-essential public exposure weeks ago. Better now than waiting another day.
