→ Proof that voting for Leave was a vote for the unknown…

Here’s a question for you, I wrote in my report of February 2016: ‘𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?’

No, me neither.
But that’s what those campaigning for Britain to leave the #EU were expecting voters to do – vote to end our membership of the EU without knowing what we’d have instead.

The problem LEAVERS had is that they simply didn’t know, and for sure they couldn’t agree.
As a result, two rival, irreconcilable ‘Leave’ campaigns were launched in the run-up to the referendum:

#UKIP’s leader, Nigel Farage, supported one (Leave.EU) and @UKIP’s then only MP, Douglas Carswell, supported the other (#VoteLeave).

I've discovered a solution to the #NHS #Covid Staffing Crisis.

It's simple.

Variable treatment according to status.
The Unvaccinated who chose to disbelieve medical science should be cared for in a marquee in the hospital car park by Gavin, a plumber, Steve the trainee, and a random collection of people selected from Facebook and YouTube.

You know ... people they trust.
Meanwhile anyone who voted Tory should be placed in a half-built wing, amidst a building site with no equipment and no staff ...

Like the ones that the PM announced as 'completely open and ready for business'.

In case you missed it, a #Brexit Party candidate, Stephen Peddie, was found guilty this week of threatening to shoot #Labour MP Dawn Butler in the Head.

Peddie owns a licensed firearm. Image
@jdpoc Peddie claimed it was justified in response to spending carried out by the MP on her property, reported by Idiot Toby Young @toadmeister … which turned out to be a complete myth.

Young’s post incited the death threat. Image
@jdpoc Peddie was bailed to await sentencing in February, meanwhile the #Brexit’er plans to appeal, if necessary, all the way to the European Court of Human Rights. The irony. Image

Bonehill was a Tory, then a Ukip member, then no party would have him.

He was jailed for multiple offences.

Many, including Far Right Watch, helped to put him there by ID'ing his social media posts and proving his authorship.
Bonehill was a fantasist, and on the autistic scale somewhat, but he was dangerous nonetheless. He's now out of prison. ImageImageImageImage
One of his tactics was to create multiple hoax posters and spread on soc med as real. These are three of his works. They were spread by thousands of people, even right wing politicians. ImageImageImage

#AntiVax Conspiracy Hoaxer Jim Corr @Jimcorrsays - he of the Corrs @TheCorrsMUsic - is defending a #Fascist Rally in #Dublin (one which is being hosted under the false guide of something to do with paedophilia, as usual). And attacking those who try to counter it. Image
@Jimcorrsays @TheCorrsMUsic He routinely posts hoaxes about Vaccines, #Covid19, Anti-Mask, persecution of the Irish by immigrants, Mossad, and #LGBT.

Perhaps at this point 'Jim' would like the opportunity to clarify his views. Image
@Jimcorrsays @TheCorrsMUsic Of course there simply IS no 'Rally against Paedophila' in #Dublin.

it's a #Trump / #QAnon #Homophobe's Day Out, by Hermann Kelly - ex #Ukip, ex #IRA, now an #Irexit loon.

Why Jim Corr would chose to throw his lot in with these Far Right Extremists, only he can explain. ImageImage

So why I think the #GE2019 is really not done yet. A short thread. The summary: I think a hung parliament is still a very likely and a desirable outcome for the UK. I first present some evidence on the former, and then my view on the desirability on the latter. #Brexit
1. Most opinion polls now point to a #Cons maj, including yesterday's @YouGov MRP. MRP is great in the tool box, but still relies on raw polling data. Here, bit.ly/2q0iSFW, I argue here that YouGov samples for BES do appear structurally different and potentially biased
2. Opinion polls are still mostly conducted at national level, ignoring constituency-level factors. My PhD student @EleAla shows that in UK, turnout tends to be systematically lower the "safer" a seat is. And this effect is increasing in the poll national lead of the incumbent..

#Brexit's 'nightmare alley' from 100 miles high. A 'house of horrors' story with a happy ending? But only if we vote for an end to the 'biggest heist in history'! 1/
Cameron launched his cunning plan (Bruges 2013) which only half worked? Spoiler! A cautionary tale, never to be followed! being nothing to do with improved welfare for the vast majority of Brits. 2/
Cam's plan was to kill off the Tories' @LibDems coalition partner, by secretly shafting them, while 'doing for' UKIP with the same bullet! Only the first bit worked? 3/

On my way to Berlin for the launch of @ForumNewEconomy. I ll be talking about "Why #Brexit votes happen: An evaluation of the impact of #austerity".
Unfortuantely, there is much more I would like to say... but can't within 10 minutes. So here is what's missing out...
In the run up to 2016 #EURef, the UK was actually slowly and gradually becoming more pro European if you believe 30 @EurobarometerEU studies since 2000.
The 2016 #EURef is culmination of political developments with UK's electoral system playing a crucial role. Here a short thread why & how #austerity induced voter shifts affected election dynamics, pushing Cameron into holding #Brexit referendum:

Today is possibly .@theresa_may's last day as PM, if .@BorisJohnson can command a majority (which is in some doubt...)

So it's a great opportunity to look back at some of the *highlights* of Mrs May's premiership in memes👇
13 JUL 2016: May was appointed as PM and named her Cabinet shortly thereafter, surprising many by giving 3 of the top #Brexit-related jobs to arch-brexiters Boris Johnson, David Davis & Liam Fox. Sheer folly, or genius in making them own what they'd sold? Sadly, the former😢
/1.
5 OCT 2016: With such a narrow result, the country could be forgiven for expecting May to propose a consensual solution, as Norway PM Erna Solberg had done in a similar situation. Most Remainers would've accepted #Norway.

May's #CitizensOfNowhere speech crushed all hope.

Super thrilled to announce that "Did #Austerity cause #brexit?" has just been accepted for publication at the @AEAjournals in the American Economic Review. Short thread on whole paper available here wrap.warwick.ac.uk/106313/...
The paper traces the rapid rise of #UKIP after 2010, and the developing of anti-establishment and growing polarisation along key socio-economic divides over time.
And highlights that #austerity policies, in particular, the hollowing out of the welfare state since 2010 induced many individuals to adopt anti-establishment sentiment -- these were successfully channeled into votes for #Leave and #UKIP

Have you heard of #Hotelling’s Law? In a two party system, it says that you get most votes by minimising the political distance between the parties. It’s worked well in the past, but it’s about to bring an end to both #Labour and the #Tory party. 1/n
uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/id…
Hotelling’s law worked really well for Tony #Blair. #Thatcher had moved the Tory party to the right, so #NewLabour had an opportunity to increase its vote share by also moving rightwards. 2/n
Politics had shifted. Both parties held broadly similar policies. Blair’s political stance, although to the left of Thatcher’s, was much further right than any Labour leader previously (or since). Labour was able to capture ground that the Tories had left unguarded. 3/n

BXP has no manifesto, no detailed policies & no plan for #Brexit (no, "just walk away" isn't a serious plan outside of a pub!)

Why are people willing to vote for a shady outfit that isn't a party, has dodgy finances & will likely adopt #UKIP's *no work* habit?
#EUelections2019
What's more, BXP now say they want to run in the next GE, even though the leader admits #Brexit isn't the answer to any of our domestic problems — you know, all those problems Leave voters thought Brexit was going to fix.

#EUelections2019
Somehow it feels like this is all about the salary and perks for some of the BXP's candidates, and that they're not taking the business of representing our country in an international forum seriously - as indeed those who were previously part of UKIP never have.

So, my daughter’s school is a polling station and just outside we came across this - the car of a young Lib Dem activist who lives in the street. Graffitied and tyres slashed. He was distraught and clearly shocked and scared. #Faversham #UKIP #LE2019
UKIP can bang on as much as they like about being a legitimate party, not racist, inclusive etc However it’s clear many of their supporters see them as something else. What they are becoming - the political wing of a populist facist movement. #UKIP #LE2019
Just a quick note to the flood of “false flag” lunatics - this has been reported to the police, and the number plate of the culprit was taken down by a neighbour so we will find out who did it. Use of the phrase “false flag” will be an instant block now. Sick of this shit.

When #NigelFarage left #UKIP he started to re-invent himself. He's not talking about immigration any more. He's talking about being the saviour of democracy, and leaving UKIP to be the extremists. He's trying to attract a more moderate voter. The polls seem to show this working
I wonder, if he does well if the #EuropeanElections2019 and the #Brexit mess in Parliament continues, it might give some #ERG members the confidence to cross the floor. Will they have confidence that they can re-elected on a #BrexitParty ticket.
That would then likely cause a general election as the government would not be able to pass anything. The #Conservatives would not have time to sort out a new leader so #TheresaMay could end up leading them into it. They could get slaughtered.

So, where are we today? Overall I would say that the #Labour #Corbyn strategy is working well, and is likely to see Jez in No. 10 at some point in the next year or just over a year.
The #Conservatives are experiencing what looks to me rather like damage ERM crisis did to them in autumn 1992. Have lost 13 points (!) with @YouGov in just six weeks. Bear in mind that experience shows that such falls get worse for some time - could be headed v low.
The moment MV3 failed to pass was a clarifying one, and therefore welcome here - had been wondering for years what was keeping the CON score so high. It was #Brexit. We're now at 50/50 whether it even happens. They will struggle to recover.
