Graduates, take notes...

Do you know that your salary is an illusion?

Let me teach you some basic math: R350,000 a year. After taxes you only get about R287, 225. Minus 12% for pension, take home is R257 565. Image
If you are not staying at home, rent can be about R4500/month. #stayhome
If you don't have medical aid already, R1700 minimum less maybe for hospital cover only...

Your new cash flow is R257, 565−(R54, 000+R1, 700×12) = R183, 165. Image
Need a car? used car (preowned) with an average car payment of R3, 500 and your insurance about R1, 500 (if you have never been covered by car insurance this value can be quite high, first time driver. So many other reasons.).

Don't buy a car yet... Please... Image

#UK #employment no.s show the horrendous cost of #lockdown leapfrog and all the other government stupidity during this pan(dem)ic.
Toll on self-employed getting on for 1 in 10
Total, economy-wide hours worked off 9.1%
1/x

#COVID19(33) #ONS
#private sector #jobs down 422k (-378k ex rail worker shift). Public sector up 143k (+99k ex-rail).

Of the 280k total, 7 out of 8 lost by those starting out in life, 16-24 yo; within which more than 1 in 4 of 16-17 yo jobs gone, "POOF!!"
2/x
#redundancies have more than tripled from 106k to 370k, while #vacancies have fallen from 848k to 547k.

This means that everyone newly #unemployed now has 1.5 openings to chase versus 7.7 a year ago. Good luck with THAT!

How many Employers result in Permenant Job Layoffs because they can't commit to hours...

A #BasicIncome is also a means to protect these workers from loosing Weeks to Months of Income before they qualify for benefits. It's FASTER than EI. It's FASTER than Welfare.
How many mothers need to work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay the rent and bills? Sacrificing #FamilyQualityTime is not helping our society increase benefits of life by not having enough time for family outings, and experiences that can benefit creativity in the workplace.

This will not have the impact on #housing that you think that it might. This is insufficient.
...“we can still get evicted after that moratorium is lifted if we're so behind on everything, that we don't have all of the back #rent ready? What if the landlord doesn't want to work with the tenant on paying them back in increments..?"
“it’s like a #rent “loan”. It helps in the beginning, but you better hope you make 2-3 times the amount when you're allowed to go back to work -otherwise you'll be in rent debt. It’s basically kind of a #housing band-aid.”

How’s everyone doing? I hope we are all doing our best to follow directives and act wisely in this season. For many of us, a situation like this is unprecedented- even Ebola was a different scenario. #COVID19 #CoronaUpdate
As we continue to navigate this terrain, we must continue to think, plan and act not just for our own good but for the good of community. In this fight against #COVID19 togetherness is essential.
One thing I want to encourage is having a sense of #collectiveleadership.
In the space where u are, what can u do differently? Can you provide food stuff and toiletries to the less privileged? Can you educate those around you about proper sanitation habits? Can you encourage people to work from home or lend financial help to those clearly struggling?

The #economy is slowing… yet we’re still comfortable that #housing will remain solid; and while consumption may moderate, it is still decent; on labor markets, I think the #JOLTS data is always interesting and revealing…
Disappointingly, #JOLTS job openings declined by 123,000 in August to a 7,051K level, marking a third consecutive monthly decline and raising the possibility that the measure has peaked for this cycle. Image
Further, the indicator’s quit rate, often seen as a signal of employee confidence in securing an improved work position, declined in August, and the vacancies-to-#unemployed ratio declined for the fifth consecutive month: all troubling signs. Image

🙌🏿Do read @RahulMaganti's reportage on how the #Amaravati project was displacing thousands of farmers from fertile lands, destroying small land holders, creating unemployment for agricultural labourers & forcing desperate migrants into exploitative, informal construction labour.
The master plan for the #Amaravati Project, prepared by a consortium of companies from Singapore, spoke about creating 56.5 lakh jobs by 2050 but the little work created so far were informal, contractual #jobs in construction, unprotected by any labor laws.ruralindiaonline.org/articles/mega-… ImageImage
Furthermore, with the #AndhraPradesh government's takeover of land for Amaravati, many #landless villagers have lost farm work, forcing young men to seek #wages at sand quarries near the Krishna river, and leaving women #unemployed. ruralindiaonline.org/articles/let-t… ImageImage
