Last week, I was invited on a radio show to discuss environmental justice and the Dominion campaign finance bill that failed. Unfortunately, we never covered it.

Allow me to do so here. Buckle in this long bc the problem is HUGE.
For those not in the know, SB25 would have prohibited candidates from “soliciting or accepting a contribution from any public service corporation," For those outside of Virginia, this directly affects Dominion Energy (the electric company for most ppl)
Virginia has NO campaign contribution limits. NONE.

If you're an energy company, you can give $50,000 to a candidate. Dominion typically gives tons of money on both sides of the aisle.

I'll let you decide what that money does for them.

I'm grateful for those of you who follow my work here. I love tweeting about #hydrology, but I also tweet about #environmentaljustice & the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (#ACPipeline). This 10-Tweet thread briefly explains why. 1/10
I am #Lumbee. My ancestors have lived in what is now #EasternNC since time immemorial. Most of my large, extended family lives in Robeson County, NC - the heart of Lumbee community & culture. I've written some on Lumbee+Hydrology & plan to write more. 2/10

Here's a recent @wpmagazine piece (not by me) about Lumbee people. It's a good entry point AND has stunning photos, but it's a little weak on distinctions btw race & citizenship. For deeper dives, read works of historian @malindalowery. 3/10

Virginia's Air Board wasn't given page 1 of #environmentaljustice screening reports for proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline industrial site before their Dec. meeting. This is important b/c p.1 shows combined effects of env. burdens & pop. vulnerability. 1/7 washingtonpost.com/local/virginia…
Combined effects are shown as "EJ Indexes," developed by @EPA to put co-located environmental & demographic data in geographic context. Here, missing pages show communities within 1, 2, & 5 mi of site are among Virginia's most vulnerable (top 1/3 to 1/10 depending on Index). 2/7
Air Board members only received second page of the report (I confirmed with @VirginiaDEQ), which shows environmental & demographic results separately, not in combination. Viewing results separately leaves out an important part of the #ACPipeline #EnvironmentalJustice story. 3/
