BREAKING: Service workers across US South launch a 1-day strike after filing a civil rights complaint against @SC_OSHA for violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act for “disproportionately excluding Black workers from the protection of its programmed inspections.” #UnionsforAll
Complaint: “@SC_OSHA has engaged in a pattern of conducting almost no programmed inspections in four key industries with disproportionate numbers of black employees,” specifically food/beverage retailers, general merchandise retailers, food service, and warehouse and storage.
Some of the US’s most-profitable corporations are included in these industries, corps like @DollarGeneral, @Wendys and @Popeyes.

For example, the SC population is ~27% black, but general merch and food/beverage retailers employ 38% and 46% black workers, respectively.

Let's start off #BlackHistoryMonth with some St Louis Labor history.

STL has a long labor history, but have you heard about the 1933 Funsten Nut Strike led by revolutionary Black women: Carrie Smith & Cora Lewis.

#UnionsForAll
Here’s what workers in St. Louis lived under.

In the '30s, the nut industry was BOOMING in St Louis. Pecans would come into the city from the Mississippi river valley. Processing those nuts was considered women’s work.
At the time, women’s work was primarily domestic labor; processing nuts was the one industrial job women had access to. White and Black women alike could be hired on to be nut pickers.

When I started talking about our rights and organizing my colleagues. They fired me." Elizabeth Arellano Sign that says Chick Fil A stop the retaliation

@JortsTheCat OK Jorts, get out of the trash can. Have Jean bring you a pipe cleaner, and get ready for a long response:

American labor law is primarily governed by the National Labor Relations Act, which was passed in 1935 as a response to a massive strike waves by unions which didn't..
@JortsTheCat ...have clearly defined rules, except in the transport industry, which to this day is covered by the National Railway Act. The constitution, through freedom of association, gaurentees the right to a union, realistically the NLRA was a measure by CAPITAL to ensure INDUSTRIAL PEACE
@JortsTheCat ...it's more complicated than this, but the tldr is since the NLRA was passed by racists, it also INTENTIONALLY excluded industries where the labor is performed by people of color, especially the service sector and farm workers, and the labor movement was never fully united...
