We all know by now that the @vulture article on #UniversalFanCon/#Fancon is just... so far beyond wrong in every possible way, and that @DarthGeekonius has some f’ing nerve.

But I also want to talk about the finances of another con run by Thai Pham, their finance guy. (Thread)
This is a link to the financial disclosure form for Anime Expo in LA, run by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (a nonprofit), in 2009 while Thai Pham, #Fancon/#UniversalFanCon’s finance VP, was head of finance for the SPJA: irs990.charityblossom.org/990O/200912/94…

(Remember that Pham was also head of PrideCon, which cancelled a week before and kept $15,000, and senior in TouhouCon, which promised to pay for talent’s hotel rooms and... didn’t.)

Okay creatives! Imma teach y'all something about promoting you and the work you do! Y'all ever heard of a "Press Kit"? If you have, cool. If you haven't, stick with me!

Creators burned by #UniversalFanCon this could hella benefit you w/ ppl asking to boost your brand!
What's a press kit? Welp, google says: A package of promotional material provided to members of the press to brief them, especially about a product, service, or candidate.

It's kind of a 'cheat sheet' for bloggers, news outlets, press, etc.
Things to include in a press kit:

- Information about who you are and what you make.
- Nice photos of your products/art (insta pics work fine)
- social media links
- if you make a comic, a synopsis of your story with sample pages
- Branding stuff (logos, etc)
- contact info

[THREAD] Hey #FanCon fam... if you're facing financial hits for travel and lodging due to #UniversalFancon , I've had a lot of success recovering funds using the following methods...
Even if that ticket says nonrefundable, CALL your airline/Amtrak/bus co and explain the situation. Offer to provide documentation. Many will at least give you a credit if not a refund.
If you booked nonrefundable lodging through Priceline, CALL THE HOTEL DIRECTLY FIRST. Tell them the situation and that you booked though Priceline and ask they would be willing to cancel the reservation under the circumstances. Get the name of the person you spoke with.
