I'm voting for the NDP in Alberta this election so that our granddaughters do not have to fight the fights of our grandmothers...for the right to use their own name, to publish books, to paint a painting under their own name and be able to earn a living selling their work 1/9
So they can decide the career they want to pursue without duress.
So they don't have to cross their legs to try and hold back labour while someone produces a credit card to pay the doctor like my mother had to do for the first 3 pregnancies 2/9
until we had #UniversalHealthcare in Canada.
So they don't have to endure forced pregnancies because of someone else's ideology.
So all children can get a good education NOT an indoctrination 3/9

Remember "#DeathPanels"? @SarahPalinUSA promised that #UniversalHealthcare was a prelude to a Stalinist nightmare where unaccountable bureaucrats decided who lived or died based on a cost-benefit analysis of the cost to keep you alive versus how much your life was worth.

Palin was right that any kind of healthcare rationing runs the risk of this kind of calculus, where we weight spending $10,000 to extend a young, healthy person's life by 40 years against $1,000 to extend an elderly, disabled person's life by a mere two years.

Ontario #CommunityPharmacy will begin to dispense Paxlovid shortly. Great for access. Except. We are being paid the princely sum of $13.25 for this service. Which is utterly demeaning, ridiculous and unsafe. Let’s dive into why:
🧵1/
Right now for dispensing publicly funded medication we are paid $8.83 each. This covers our software, the label, vial, bag, and time for clinical & technical check (plus lights, wages etc). So this new ability to dispense paxlovid nets us an additional $4.42. Wow, right?
No.
2/
Paxlovid is not like most meds we dispense. There are *many* drug interactions that we must manage. Many! And in rural settings it will most often be the #CommunityPharmacist who is tasked to consider, evaluate and manage these interactions. Paxlovid expert physicians who

In response to the pandemic, I have started providing gyne coverage in NWO (which required licensing in a second Canadian province). I've also been scheduled to provide locum coverage in Yukon this summer and have just completed the application process for licensing there. 1/...
The process for obtaining a license to practice medicine is long, onerous and expensive. The provinces and territories require the same documents proving the applicant is qualified to practice in Canada. For a Canadian citizen who completed training in Canada, this includes 2/...
med school transcripts, diplomas (Medical Doctorate), certification from the Medical Council of Canada (completion of med school and Canadian qualifying exams), and successful completion of residency training and fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons 3/...

Today I asked @AdrianDix if he believed in the equitable delivery of health care services to all British Columbians. Under the watch of the @bcndp gov't there is growing inequity in access to primary health care. 1/ #bcpoli #healthcare #UniversalHealthcare
Doctor's clinics in my riding are beginning to introduce fees for services that should be free. Even worse under the watch of the @bcndp multi billion-dollar corporations are getting into the business – an example is Telus Health. 2/ #bcpoli #healthcare #UniversalHealthcare
Telus Health MyCare provides a virtual walk-in clinic billed under MSP, but if you want so-called premium services like annual screenings, preventative health, and advanced diagnostics, you'd have to pay sometimes thousands of dollars out of pocket. 3/ #bcpoli #healthcare

Everyone can see that prioritizing public health over private profit leads to better health outcomes at less cost. Siding with private profit in the face of this evidence says everything.

He @Booker4KY, want any ammo to go after @RandPaul for stuff that's useless? Because this can help.
I mean from a Self-declared "#Libertarian", who seriously isn't he's #SocialConservative at best, it's not hard to dig up dirt on @RandPaul of his Voting Records. Like the 2016 Tax Bill that gave more money to the #Rich, Supports Banning #Abortion (which isn't Libertarian),...
Opposes #LGBTQIA Rights like Same Sex Marriage & wanted it to be banned, Rand is inconsistent on #MilitarySpending of sometimes leaning to not for it or for it in offensive wars (which many Libertarians call that out & believe in Defense of a Direct Threat of an Attack)...

For the second time in recent years, my monthly #SocialSecurity benefit has gone DOWN because the premium for #Medicare has gone UP more than the #COLA adjustment to the cash benefit. SS isn’t an “entitlement”, it’s insurance into which I paid a fortune. Any insurance policy
which doesn’t adjust for inflation in all of its elements (including healthcare inflation, which has ALWAYS run ahead of ordinary inflation), is poorly designed and needs fixing.

#UniversalHealthcare would literally solve the problems of funding for #MediCare overnight.
#Congress, please strengthen and expand #ObamaCare in such a way the people who are on fixed income do not see their #COLA increases entirely eaten up by #Medicare expenses!
Controlling runaway pharmaceutical costs would be a great place to start!

This is the #DemPartyPlatform for 2020.This section is called: ACHIEVING UNIVERSAL, AFFORDABLE, QUALITY HEALTH CARE
Only one party has a specific plan for ensuring EVERY American will have access to quality healthcare as a human right..the other fights to TAKE IT AWAY. 1/10 Image
Overturning the #AffordableCareAct remains a central plank of the Republican Party (invisible) platform. The difference in values between the two parties on this life-or-death issue could not be more stark. 2/11 #DemPartyPlatform #healthcare Image
The pandemic has made this difference in values painfully, brutally clear. Pres Trump has repeatedly downplayed the threat of the coronavirus, bullied governors for enacting life-saving public health measures, &left our frontline health care heroes w/o the equipment they need 3/11 Image

Today is the start of #SHW2020! Each day this week, I'll be tweeting about Britain's long, tempestuous and ever-so-slightly bonkers love–hate relationship with its #sexualhealth.

Darlings, brace yourselves. 💋 #SHW20 Image
We begin with the Victorians, who, contrary to popular belief, were obsessed with sex. In the C19, the only known #STIs were syphilis and gonorrhoea. Diagnosis depended on observable symptoms (no blood tests/smears). Effective treatments were non-existent. Image: @ExploreWellcome Image
In 1864 the British government introduced the Contagious Diseases Acts, intended to protect the armed forces through 'regulation' of 'common prostitutes'. The Acts gave police almost-unlimited discretionary powers to arrest any woman they thought might be soliciting. Image: HCPP Image

I am an optimist, but rarely sound like one. I'm wired to see, then fix problems. That journey isn't rosy but always worthwhile. So I don't love dramatic "failed state" proclamations.

Here's the most balanced view I have of what I'm pessimistic & optimistic about for the US.

A/
I'm optimistic about:
1) Many young people are more civically engaged than ever.
2) Even the far left & right see many of the same problems. They mainly disagree on solutions. Eventually we can debate those.
3) Reserve currency + military buy us time to solve things.

B/
4) We have the tools to aggregate and direct capital from individuals to where its needed. We've only scratched the surface for deploying it.
5) The entrepreneurial spirit is still here, but underutilized. You see glimmers on Shark Tank & some startups.

@kpanyc I get what you’re saying. But shutting the world down for months (or more) would have very different impacts on those who are paid by the hour, the week, the month, the semester, or the year. Some jobs can be done from home; some can’t. Some people have savings and homes...
@kpanyc and others are living from paycheck to paycheck. We don’t have the social safety net to rescue those who would fall into dire need. (We should; but we don’t.) Will we have to do triage? Play “Lifeboat”?
@kpanyc The best solutions are to cancel unnecessary gatherings; reduce workdays (w/FEWER PEOPLE PRESENT AT ANY ONE TIME); increase the standard amount of “personal space” between people (“Don’t Stand So Close To Me”);
and MOST IMPORTANT:
DO MORE THINGS ONLINE! (We HAVE the technology.)

A GOVERNANCE HALF-LIFE* IN 25 TWEETS
‘Doing’ governance & (self indulgent) thoughts on #governance & #evidence & #health

I joined DFID on 9/11 (11/09/2001) as a Social Development Adviser.
Not drunk on the MDGs, but slightly merry.
I had never heard of governance. 1/25
I started work in 1993 in health research (Tz, malaria; drug prescribing), then disability inclusion (India) & consulting in health, WATSAN.
After 6 yrs in Kolkata I heard that DFID was recruiting regional specialists.
I fancied myself as a DFID South Asia specialist! 2/25
....DFID sent me to Malawi.
I hadn’t heard of ‘Governance’.
But slowly realised that I had worked on it – local govt, politics, rights in health; water tariffs, participation & transparency, health management.
So Governance in sectors, not Governance as a thing. 3/25

Another difference #ACA makes!

2010-12: With my Cobra ending, in GA I stay covered via obscure HIPPA protections. My only choice: Celtic Insurance owned by Centene Corp. For my Humira drug, Celtic makes me pay tens thousands up front as pay first & manually snail mail claims 1/
To make matters worse, this insurance takes up to 9 months to reimburse me as I float tens of thousands dollars via savings or credit cards. Other times, insurance says submit my bills (as claims) from CVS Specialty Pharmacy instead, but then CVS hounds me for unpaid bills! 2/
While all this is happening, insurance has no transparency in their online portal or snail mail of the processing, status, or even the existence of my claims! I'm completely in the dark, I have to call & call & call this insurance's customer service representatives for info 3/

In late-August of 2010, my dear first-cousin was diagnosed with inoperable, non-curable, small-cell lung #cancer. He and I were raised like #siblings and cared for one another as brother and sister, a very close-knit family.
My #cousin was an amazing man, husband, and father to twin boys; who were only 14 when he died in September 2017. He died at his home, surrounded by his family and friends…just how he’d wished.
Of course, he only had these wishes after his experiences spending extended periods of time in clinics, hospitals, and laboratories. Blood draws, lung scans, injections, medications, #chemotherapy, hospitalizations, emergency room visits from all the awful side-effects of his...
