Minorities are at a far higher risk of adverse outcomes from a SARS-CoV-2 infection than whites

When whites are aware of this discrepancy they are far less likely to support COVID mitigations and far less likely to be concerned about COVID in general

sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Raising the awareness of racial disparities in COVID outcomes therefore runs the risk of counter-intuitively reducing protections against infection & disease in minority populations

When whites learn they are at less risk than minorities, whites don't act

They just stop caring Image
Death rates from COVID are more than 2.5x higher in minorities than whites in the under 1 year old, 5-9year old, and 20-44 year old demographics

We are not going to mask on and off for the rest of our lives UNLESS doctors with MPH, like this, have their way.

What are we doing to END this? What? Complaining on Twitter?

We need these people to understand that they have no control at all over us, the public, now.
Other countries aren't even proposing this, except North Korea and Canada and Iran.

Unsure if the sentiment is even common in China.

We must do more, now.

This doctor is in #Atlanta #Georgia according to his profile -- folks in Georgia, does this doctor's opinion on masks represent yours?

Masks don't work anywhere in the world.

If @nationalpost editors cared about society, they would NOT platform these authors, known COVID minimizers.

The article is misinformation. It ignores #LongCovidKids, post-COVID risks, education access for vulnerable families & multiple studies.

2/ 2 of the authors, Dr. Jennifer Grant & Dr. Martha Fulford, are from the #UrgencyOfNormal group. It advocates for schools to be open without protections, saying Omicron is mild, even though it hospitalized & killed more kids in 8 mo than 2 years prior!

3/ The Urgency of Normal “toolkit” has been criticized by experts before.

"It's just simply, here is the conclusion we've come to, and here is the argument we would use in favor of this conclusion. And I think it's flawed ... start to finish," says @MarkWKlineMD1.

American Universities can function perfectly well without vax mandates.

Look no further than U of Arkansas for an example. In Fall '21, State legislation forbid vax mandates, yet Higher Ed carried on.

Bodies did not pile up in the hallways.

bit.ly/3PazsZp
From their website, the University shows goodwill in providing vaccination to those who wish for it, free.

But it does not require it for those who do not.

Babs says she will not reimplement mask mandate for #LosAngeles b/c of a tiny fraction of a downward shift in 10/100,000 hospitalization, blaming the CDC's metrics. But given how stressful this has been for Californians, this is nothing to be happy about, as below.

#FireFerrer
She would have gladly done this without huge public and media pushback plus legal threats.

This will only continue, as she makes clear, until someone replaces her.

We cannot remain vigilant forever so must reign her in once and for all now.

I will update more in a few minutes. Watching her ramble on right now.

The consequences of forcing "normal" under profoundly abnormal conditions:

Everyone is set up to fail.

'And when I ask students what is happening to them, what is making school so hard this year, their consistent response is that it is just "too much." It’s all too much.'
...
"Because even prior to the pandemic, “normal” wasn't working. ...Too many students felt churned through a system that through its schedule, structure, and offerings, communicated that they were not at the center of its design."
...
wbur.org/cognoscenti/20…
This nails the consequences of trying to pretend we are in 2019 but with zoom and masks.

We have failed to acknowledge that our needs have changed.

That the expectations need to change.

That the resources need to expand to meet these.

A lot of the #UrgencyofNormal folks say "Oh, we need to LIVE again. If you get COVID you can easily get paxlovid and monoclonal antibodies, etc and probably be fine." Thread. 1/6
Only problem with that is with Omicron (including BA.2 et al), most of our current mAbs don't work so well and the ones that do are not readily available. Paxlovid is incredibly hard to find AND a lot of docs and providers STILL don't know that they should prescribe it. 2/6
Add to that the $$ cuts to COVID relief related funding, and it gets even worse. If you are fully vaxxed + boosted and get COVID, you'll probably not need to go to the hospital, but if your disease is anything more than mild, it is HARD to get these "treatments" 3/6

There were many considerations that governments, researchers, and leaders balanced as they considered measures to "protect kids mental health," under the psychopathic notion that "covid isn't that bad for kids." Very few considered the direct cost of a child losing a caregiver /1
For every adult caregiver, caregiving grandparent, or other important adult who died in a child's life during COVID due to someone being unvaccinated, or a responsible policy not being followed, a child was directly harmed.

/2
For anyone who dares say "COVID isn't that bad for kids," a hearty middle finger emoji to you. That includes the entire #urgencyofnormal crew, and every psychopathic keyboard warrior determined to exercise their "freedoms" over protecting their fellow humans.

#UrgencyOfNormal vs #urgencyofequity

Wealthier, whiter people dominate the Urgency of Normal movement (not all, I know). And they aren't listening to the voices they claim to care about; instead, they selfishly want their kids to be ok because, ultimately, they'll be ok.
oh, look who agrees with urgency of normal peeps! and look who disagrees

1. Something interesting is happening with #COVID19 in MA, where case incidence appears much higher right now in wealthier suburbs. My guess is one of two things is happening, neither of which bodes well. 🧵
2. First, the data. We are seeing average daily rates > 20 per 100K in towns like Manchester, Sherborn, Wayland, Concord, and Wellesley. In contrast, it’s <= 5 in Chelsea, Lawrence, and Brockton. This isn’t a formal analysis and there are counterexamples, but you get the idea.
3. Hypotheses 1: This is the #UrgencyOfNormal crowd. Wealthy suburbs with high vaccination and booster rates are dropping pandemic precautions at a faster rate. This is certainly happening anecdotally ⬇️

A 🧵of Smart 🧵(with the exception of mine) on the the new dumbed down CDC's Community Levels.

"Dumbed down" because CoVid actually causes IQ loss and brain fog.

These Community Levels will cause more CoVid. Thus literally, dumbing down America.
At the writing of this thread BA.2 is ripping up multiple countries including Hong Kong and Denmark.

It is also spreading across America.

As part of the changes, the CDC is recommending no longer doing universal contact tracing, so it will be more

difficult to track these cases.

We welcome the first steps towards normalcy as mask mandates are rescinded in schools across the country.

Now we begin the long journey to restore our student's lives back to complete normalcy. #EducatorsForNormalcy #UrgencyOfNormal
Normal means NEVER bringing back mask mandates ever again.

Normal means no quarantines or school closures.

Normal means no testing and tracing.

Normal means no separating children by vaccination status (or even asking about it) for any reason.
These are personal health decisions and in the case of children, they are decisions that should be a choice made by their parents in consultation with their personal doctors.

Yes Tracy, because we actually have expertise in relevant areas, like child development & mental health.

Your awful summary &stance on mental health during covid measures is *not* scientific or expert, and despite no expertise you have been wrongly writing & opining for >1y

/1
In March 2021, you opined with other MH non-experts Gandhi, Henderson, and Johnson that "COVID-19 deaths in children and adolescents are magnitudes smaller than deaths from suicide, some now driven by school closure"

You and those same non-MH experts testified about harms in April of 2021 to the Sacramento School Board about "harming children."

I have seen some poor arguments against #UrgencyOfNormal recently..the lowest form involves attacking authors based on their race and SES .. many signatories are essential workers including nurses, frontline physicians etc. who have lived and dealt w/ covid for two years 1/10
Others misrepresent the argument as calling the "pandemic to be over", "disregarding the vulnerable" & "taking our masks away" but the entire premise is focused on removing unnecessary restrictions that have no demonstrable impact on changing the course of the pandemic .. 2/10
and restoring normalcy for those at lowest risk for poor outcomes I.e. school aged children and coll. students whose low risk is now even lower with vaccinations & recovery from prior infection..it is imperative now we unburden & restore their right to a vibrant social life 3/10

When @JuliaRaifman sent @drlucybmcbride this Tweet, McBride's response was: "Fear & shame aren't motivating."
Imagine the parents reading that their baby should be kept out of sight so that others might not be afraid.
This is the darkness of #UrgencyofNormal. 🧵 Image
This is McBride's response in full. Notice McBride, after having shown no compassion for the passing of this little girl, no compassion for the grief of her parents, suggests, "Empathy & Compassion for all."
Who does she mean?
Notice McBride retweeted; to what end? Image
In the replies, McBride responds to the suggestion Rainfman's Tweet is "not offered in good faith." If you follow @JuliaRaifman you will know this is untrue. Yet McBride is quick to embrace the sentiment saying, "Exactly" adding that Raifman is "resorting" to bad tactics. Image

New data updates today in the #UrgencyOfNormal toolkit! I'll go into detail here on the updates to (1) better quantify how vaccines address COVID risk for older adults, and (2) delve into what vaccination rates in children really mean (and don't mean). 🧵urgencyofnormal.com
The slide on vaccine protection for those >65 yrs now shows absolute risk levels, rather than just % vaccine efficacy, and compares COVID risk levels to the flu for this age group.
From CDC data, peak flu hospitalization rates in the >65 year old age group range from ~10-50 per 100k per week. The six most recent pre-pandemic years are shown here. gis.cdc.gov/GRASP/Fluview/…

Study out of southern switzerland. Measures of depression, anxiety, and stress varied as the pandemic went on, but overall numbers not particuarly high compared to other reported numbers. they did increase, however.
Interesting conclusion:

"anxiety and stress almost doubled over ten months following the end of the first pandemic wave. However... psychological distress may not be worse compared with pre-pandemic, and may in fact be less marked than in neighbouring countries in Europe."
super important, people who had chronic diseases far more impacted than those without.

"Educators do not have rights to mask"
"This is out of concern students see faces."
Just like that, Denmark transforms the denial of a right to wear a mask into a requirement to unmask.
Denmark has made masks moral wrongs. @TracyBethHoeg is fine with that.
This is a dark path.🧵
Hoeg’s #UrgencyofNormal partner, @drlucymcbride agrees: “human beings need to see each other’s faces.” Maybe this is news to McBride but needing to see faces imposes on others obligations to reveal them. McBride doesn't restrict the obligation, which makes it a broad social one.
I don’t know how else to say this, but Hoeg and McBride seem to believe wearing a mask by one person is the wrongful deprivation of another person’s human needs. A little ironic coming from the individual responsibility camp, no?

A well balanced, expert review of quality of evidence limitations, the mixed nature of results we're seeing, and the implications of all of this as it pertains to "Covid-19 impacts on youth mental health."

/1
"Longitudinal findings paint a more nuanced picture than some cross-sectional studies from the early stages of the pandemic, though there is reason to believe that there could be long-term impacts on youth mental health, especially in more vulnerable youth."

/2
Compared to some very one-sided evidence reviews from the Canadian Paediatric Society and the Royal Society of Canada, and the awful #urgencyofnormal document, this review highlights the complexities and nuances.

Folks @NewsHour @PBS presenting #UrgencyOfNormal / Lucy McBride relatively uncritically, without mentioning all the errors and lack of expertise in children's development and mental health they have. Please let them know how important it is to have mental health experts.
Literally an entire segment in which Lucy McBride, a private internist with zero child mental health, speech development, or child developmental expertise, was asked questions about MH/development impacts by @IAmAmnaNawaz .

Expertise matters.
Please media, stop giving non-experts "mental health of kids" expertise cred or even credibility.

There is no reason that a private practice internist should be speaking on national television in her white coat about pediatric development or mental health.
