Put the label on some N95s and mail them to every American family. And start finally making kid size ones.

Issue public service announcements about cleaning the air. And how doing so improves health not just against #COVID, but allergens, pollution and other pathogens.
2/ Like someone with much better graphic design skills can make a mock up #American version USA99 (with 3M or something). Press an American Bald Eagle on the nose bridge (where the maple leaf is). Put the warning on the side. Give them to EVERYONE for FREE. Require in hospitals. Children’s CAN99 respirators from Canada made by vitacore Adult CAN99 respirators from Canada made by vitacore
3/ Then! Send each family a kit to make a corsi rosenthol box: 4xMERV13 filters, a box fan, duct tape. Takes 60 min or less to build, costs less than $30. Can reuse by adding new filters. Works for ALL air pollution: wildfire smoke, mold, pollen, dust, germs & #COVID.

🚨POST-COVID & Kids🚨

New @CDCgov report showing quite clearly that children are at significantly more risk for life-threatening diagnoses after COVID infection. Very convincing evidence that prevention of COVID-19 in children is very important to reduce childhood mortality.

/1 These charts are graphical representations of table 3 from:
In every age demographic, life threatening and severe disorders are more significant after COVID infection. We also see a drop in muscle/neurological/psychiatric disorders post-COVID in kids. I have some hypotheses on that.

/2
This is true of symptoms (not diagnoses) as well, though less dramatically so.

The consequences of forcing "normal" under profoundly abnormal conditions:

Everyone is set up to fail.

'And when I ask students what is happening to them, what is making school so hard this year, their consistent response is that it is just "too much." It’s all too much.'
...
"Because even prior to the pandemic, “normal” wasn't working. ...Too many students felt churned through a system that through its schedule, structure, and offerings, communicated that they were not at the center of its design."
...
wbur.org/cognoscenti/20…
This nails the consequences of trying to pretend we are in 2019 but with zoom and masks.

We have failed to acknowledge that our needs have changed.

That the expectations need to change.

That the resources need to expand to meet these.

Less than 2.5 hours of exposure while wearing an N99 was enough for my partner to be infected by super transmissible Omicron.

Public Health turned Politicians have left us on our own & there is no magic bullet. Individuals can only mitigate a moderate amount of risk.
Learning to "Live with COVID" is a goal that requires a collective response. In this so called Urgency of Normal, as people lose their resilience & choose denial over reality, collective action has been shunned and vilified, including by many psychologists & healthcare providers.
This is far from normal. This is an #UrgencyofEquity. Individuals must now learn how to make & accept a reasonable risk calculus of unreasonable harms every day while the non-resilient people around them can decrease that risk by an order of magnitude, but choose their #freedumb.

#UrgencyOfNormal vs #urgencyofequity

Wealthier, whiter people dominate the Urgency of Normal movement (not all, I know). And they aren't listening to the voices they claim to care about; instead, they selfishly want their kids to be ok because, ultimately, they'll be ok.
oh, look who agrees with urgency of normal peeps! and look who disagrees

Lest there be any doubt about what Democrats actually think.

A 🧵

They want masking in school, @JeffreyZients @RWalensky .

Evidently, they don't view it as a scarlet letter.

(Just say no to the KFF manufactured consent below).
We don't think it's safe to resume normal pre-pandemic activities, you wealthy political hacks, @JeffreyZients @RWalensky.

That is not an ad hominem as it is a precise description of their financial status, actual functions, and roles.
As @tarahaelle would recognize, I've buried the lede.

Because I wanted to talk with you at length about this.

The American people resoundingly recognize in a very fundamental way, that there is no return to "normal."

This is an opportunity for Biden

Last week, a few of my wonderful @Columbia colleagues and I wrote an open letter to illustrate that among public health researchers and practitioners, there is wide support that we use rigorous accumulated scientific evidence to guide COVID-19 policy. (a🧵)
This is especially important if we want to ensure we have an equitable response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (which, as @Lakshmi_RKG so eloquently states here -- has been inequitable from the start). 2/n

It shouldn't have to be said that the health, well-being, and safety of all children (and their schools, their families, and their communities at large) matter. It honestly breaks my heart that this assumption isn't a given. (3/n)

This weekend we drove almost 600 km to go to #Baiersbronn to get our 3.5 year old vaccinated with #Pfizer #Offlabel.
We left Friday afternoon to stay at the vaccination center and hotel after a 5 hour drive from Switzerland 🇨🇭

With talks throughout Europe of dropping mask mandates and no clear action towards mitigation measures like ventilation or CO2 measurements (#COVIDisAirborne), it has become clear that no one is willing to wait for the U5s to get vaccinated to get back to pre-pandemic life
We made up our minds after reading about families that had done the same on the FB from @ImmunizeUnder5s and contacted @U12Schutz to help us with the organisation. We were offered the #Baiersbronn centres so we signed up with @regiopraxis. Everything sorted in just a few days ✅

My family's trip to Germany for #OffLabelU5 treatment #Pfizer #VaccinesForAll #UrgencyOfEquity #ImmunizeUnder5s #ShotsForTots #ProtectingTheirFuture

We're in Germany right now. Landed Wed night, drove 2.5 hrs to our accommodation near the clinic. As the Doctor is working insane hours to help desperate families, they were still working and did a 1am house call. Like a German Mary Poppins minus the umbrella, plus mRNA 😆 2/7
When I heard FDA decision to withhold safe vaccines (+ of course the continued blocking of #OffLabelU5 by @CDCDirector) I was even happier to be here. I trust science. And honestly, with many Govts removing mask/social distancing requirements, who else was going to help us?? 3/7

1/ So tired of smug garbage thought pieces in pubs like @TheAtlantic trivializing #COVID mass death & #HealthInequity

Thousands dying daily & cont'd health inequity means we haven't done what's needed to stop mitigations or "open" things that aren't even closed #UrgencyOfEquity
2/ Pieces like this endorse society brushing past those who remain at most risk from #COVID to move to a past inequitable "normal," while making a passing, half-hearted "that's tragic" comment about continued COVID health inequities & suffering. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
3/ Interesting that the author expressed concern that "Many white-collar workers still haven’t returned to the office" but failed to mention healthcare, retail, or factory workers. #UrgencyOfEquity #COVID

@CDCgov @fema If you are a close contact to someone who tests positive, CDC guidance is to quarantine for five days and then get tested. (1/
@CDCgov @fema The CDC guidance says if up to date on vaccinations, in lieu of quarantine:
(1) wear a well fitting mask around others
(2) avoid being around people who are at high risk?

This seems to me as irrational. (2/

latimes.com/business/story…
@CDCgov @fema Furthermore, the CDC guidance specifies for a close contact:
(1) 6 feet for 15 minutes over 24 hours is required for a close contact
(2) after completing five days of isolation, a person is not considered a close contact.

This seems also irrational to me. (3/

People are asking - if not going to have an #UrgencyOfNormal now, what should we do? Mask forever? Keep kids muzzled and isolated?
No. Of course not.
Here is what makes sense (as it appears that #COVID19 isn't going anywhere....
1. Get vaccines to everyone including kids, using an #UrgencyOfEquity
2. Upgrade all school facilities so they have good ventilation and windows
3. Universal masking when high community transmission
4. Don't close schools unless major outbreaks at a particular school
5. Let kids play outside and congregate
6. Make sure schools have the flexibility for kids who cannot attend to receive high quality virtual education (e.g. immunocompromised) when it's needed (major outbreaks)
7. Provide social workers and mental health services for all

There’s a lot of misinformation about kids & COVID being pushed by a group of MDs calling for the #urgencyofnormal. Their claims seem to be based in science or make just a bit of sense. But they’ve got the facts wrong, plain and simple. Here's a quick #FactCheck 🧵
Fact #1. COVID is not like the flu for kids (or their parents!). COVID mortality since 2019 is 5x higher than the flu. COVID is linked to MIS-C and other lingering symptoms. Nearly 100K kids hospitalized from COVID.
Fact #2. Schools aren't “highly vaccinated” yet.

📈80% of children ages 5-11 are not fully vaccinated
📈45% of children ages 12-17 are not fully vaccinated
📈We see persistent disparities in COVID outcomes & vaccination rates in children
