Coming to think of it, the Tethered (#UsMovie) and the White Walkers (#GameOfThrones) have quite a bit in common:
1. They come in silence but not in peace
2. They won't stop until they kill errrrrrrrrybody
3. They wear block colors
4. They have a signature weapon
5. Their death stare does half the job
6. Their leaders could use some edge tamer

FINALLY saw #UsMovie and now I can read the @kyalbr commentary and listen to the Still Processing episode that I've been avoiding this whole time... WHEW!

Ok so: in Charles Williams's Descent Into Hell, our heroine Pauline has been pursued by a doppelgänger since childhood. 1/x
"She had had to learn the lines at school:

The Magus Zoroaster, my dead child,
Met his own image walking in the garden

She had had nightmares that night, after reading the lines... She had always hated Shelley for making it so lovely, when it wasn't loveliness but black panic."
I can't do the rest of the book justice, but there are other characters who meet themselves, each a case study in what it means to look oneself in the face without lying, or fail to do so. 3/x (forgot the # above)

#Usmovie thread *spoliers* So here's our attempt/essay on the complex/rich @JordanPeele visual narrative/film. First let's #citeasista @NotYoAfrodisiac editor/writer @WearYourVoice @BlackYouthProj as foundational text researching Black survival in horror

@JordanPeele @NotYoAfrodisiac @WearYourVoice @BlackYouthProj First the review title 'The manufactured inequality of #Us was our entry point as a storytelling platform for Black digital humanities/popculture studies interested in reclaiming creative/cultural capital thru the sociological lens of race, gender, labor, tech, theater & theology
@JordanPeele @NotYoAfrodisiac @WearYourVoice @BlackYouthProj When we read the phrase 'manufactured inequality' this got our sociological spidey senses. We saw parallels between #UsMovie referencing hands across america as toxic capitalism/disparity cited extensively (especially re: redlining & 'Life beneath NYC') by @NotYoAfrodisiac review

I’m sure what I think of this. I read three articles in it (will link as a thread) & I remain unsure how much of this is journalistic spin/interpretation. I just don’t think of the double as evil after my viewing of the film, it’s way more complicated than that...

I have no authority and no paycheck for this but #UsMovie touched a lot of deeply personal reference points and I don’t want these weird feelings inside me.
******Spoilers follow
There were so many perspectives on realness: reflection, shadow, mimesis—even creatures/things get twins (spider, rabbit, ambulance). By the time we see how the Tethered (They) live, we have many signals to think about who lives vs who performs a life
Yes for the glory in watching Adelaide as a little black girl pursuing an adventure (tho ill-advised). She GETS INTO trouble, doesn’t EMBODY it: one way that black horror is liberating. But I didn’t need to remember Alice in Wonderland and that creepy ass rabbit! Image

Yall the universe is against me. I’m here to see @usmovie and the fire alarm went off during the previews and we were all told to go home. @JordanPeele why????
This was my chance to see it with friends and when I could go home not alone! I guess my next option to see it tomorrow during the day? We have to go back to get refunds tomorrow anyway. Sigh. I tried to give you money Mr. Peele!
Ok, so we’re going to get refunds this afternoon and see it during the day. Maybe this is better. Maybe it will be less terrifying???? #USmovie
