Viruses are very small things with very big effects. During the #SARSCoV2 pandemic, tiny changes in molecular biology had huge impacts on people’s lives. How could we communicate about this clearly?

In a new study with @CVRinfo @GSofASimVis and @COGUK_ME, @sarahiannucci1 explains how she used animations and interactive visualisations to help explain the threat of #SARSCoV2 variants of concern (#VOCs; 2/9)
There were, of course, plenty of data out there, collected by groups like @COGUK_ME. But these sites were (quite reasonably) aimed at expert audiences.

Could the details of new SARS-CoV-2 variants be explained in a way that was accessible for the public? (3/9) Screenshot of the COG-UK/ME...

Wastewater contains a treasure trove of information for monitoring public health.

In our new paper, we solve several lab and computational bottlenecks to achieve timely, accurate, and cost-effective SARS-CoV-2 surveillance using wastewater sequencing. nature.com/articles/s4158…
Our approach enabled early detection of emerging virus lineages (by as much as two weeks) and often detected lineages not seen clinically. Using a single sample, we profiled virus lineage dynamics from the scale of an entire city all the way to individual buildings.
This project truly took a village. It was a close @K_G_Andersen lab collaboration with @smruthi_karthik of @KnightLabNews, and so many contributors from @UCSanDiego @scrippsresearch @ScrippsHealth @radychildrens @sharphealthcare @SanDiegoCounty @CAPublicHealth @my_helix

So excited to finally share the latest from our group just published in @CellCellPress describing a next-generation trivalent COVID-19 vaccine that is designed to protect against all variants, and is delivered mucosally 1/n
This was a huge @McMasterU team effort, co-led with my incredibly talented colleagues, Dr. Zhou Xing and Dr. Brian Lichty. This vaccine is now in Phase I clinical trial, led by @inhaled_cov_vax 2/n
The real heroes behind this incredible story are the trainees who worked tirelessly to get this done on an unbelievably short timeline. Dr. Sam Afkhami from the Xing group and Mike D’Agostino from my group are co-first authors of the study

Devo me preocupar?

Detalhes👇

Thanks a lot for all your efforts @sailorrooscout ♥️

Will the newly identified sub-lineages of #Delta may initiate a new wave of #Covid19 in India? What impact the increasing prevalence of the Delta-D clade would have on global #COVID burden?

My write-up deliberating on these issues in @TheWireScience 👇 science.thewire.in/the-sciences/a…
#Delta variant and its extended family: How much do we need to worry?

During the first few months of the #pandemic, the evolution of the virus was relatively predictable, with substitutions accumulating at a fixed pace: 1 substitution every second week 2/
In contrast, the 2nd year of the #pandemic is punctuated by the emergence of several #variants that bore evidence of dramatic evolution 3/

Can #SARSCoV2 #variants fully evade #vaccine induced protection? Or even natural protection?
The rapid emergence of too many different #variants shows that the virus is struggling to survive! That is why it’s changing so fast, probably, to prolong its stay in human bodies 1/
Though #vaccines may not be working perfectly against some #VOCs, but those fully vaccinated are protected against severe disease & death. No VOC can completely evade the vaccine induced protection, especially against severe disease & death! Why?.......... 2/
The #variants do not have changes in T-cell epitopes because when you are infected with a variant that evades an antibody, that variant can go to someone else and evade their antibody too. So it spreads through the population.... 3/

Our new preprint on the spread of the #SARSCoV2 variant Alpha in Geneva, Switzerland, and Beta in South Africa is online. We used clinical and epidemiological data to better understand the mechanisms that lead to a transmission advantage of the #VOCs. 1/8 doi.org/10.1101/2021.0…
When analyzing viral load in 950 individuals, we found that Alpha infections exhibit a higher viral load and longer viral shedding compared to non-VOC. 2/8
We then used a transmission model to study the following potential mechanisms that result in a transmission advantage: i) increase in transmissibility, ii) increase of infectious duration, and iii) immune evasion. 3/8

This 👇🏼 #Singapore seeing new large #COVID19 clusters, including #B1617 Changi Airport, Tan Tock Seng hospital. Shows a) #VOC import risk, b) better cluster tracking with low case numbers, c) now is not the time to relax measures 🇨🇭 (1/n) straitstimes.com/singapore/heal…
Excellent thread from @trvrb on growth of nee #VOCs with added analyses from @TWenseleers
Response to #B1617 #SARSCoV2 In #Singapore govt 3-phase model has just reduced group sizes from 5 to 2 and stopped indoor dining. #Switzerland, with >1000 cases daily planning large relaxation 🙈 #PrecautionaryPrinciple please channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore…
