#BREAKING: Air India Express aircraft from Dubai to Calicut as part of #VandeBharatMission with over 174 passengers and 5 crew members crashes after overshooting runway and going into the valley. Aircraft landed with a high speed and has reportedly broken. Passengers evacuated.

#UPDATE: Two People feared dead in Air India Express plane crash as per official sources. More details are awaited.

Landed in Delhi after a #VandeBharatMission flight from Dulles, Washington today. Some thoughts & observations.

No passengers, no flights (security takes a minute at most) and no shops.
Airports have become ghost towns. Captures the Covid-19 economic disruption 1/n

Flight was full. But it’s mostly pent-up demand. Elderly, who were visiting their children & students, mostly. Once this dries up, and the virus doesn’t slow down, things will become worse for the travel industry 2/n

Embassy & Air India ground staff; quite a few above 50 (seniors get posted to the US may be), were quite efficient & cheerful. The cabin crew dons a full body PPE, unlike passengers who get a PPE kurta. It’s flight, land & test, quarantine for 6 days and fly again for them 3/n

Landed at the Delhi airport. Waited up to an hr before de-boarding. Delhi passengers de-boarded first and were sent to separate queues. Chennai passengers were sent to another place for transfer. They have chairs all over to sit. Details post landing on this thread #VBM

Boarded Chennai flight, finally!
Again, snacks and water were placed at our seats. Everything was organised very well at the @DelhiAirport. They made sure everyone followed social distancing and had lined up chairs so that everyone can sit. Super impressed! #VandeBharatMission

Finally, we landed in Chennai about an hour ago. We were asked to wait for few mins before landing. Post landing, they made a temp check, completed our immigration and headed towards baggage claim. The whole process took less than 30 mins. Very well organised again. #VBM

Registered using the links updated by the Indian embassy in April to go back to India. No luck with the first set of flights. Registered again with the second link and got selected for the third phase of flights. Got an email from embassy Jun 8th for the flight on 17th..

@Indian_Embassy sent an email with French bank account details of @airindiain and we were asked to do account transfer. Made the transfer on the same day. Got the tickets from Air India on Jun 10th. Indian embassy promptly followed up on payments and receipt of tickets

Thousands of citizens of #Maharasthra, including students, labourers, others with compelling cases of medical, old age, family emergencies, unemployed individuals and tourists are still stranded overseas in UAE and other countries. (2/n)

Unfortunately the Government of Maharashtra has not yet permitted flights from UAE and other countries to land in #Mumbai even in the Phase 2 of #VandeBharatMission (3/n)

The @Indian_Embassy officials including @Naman_ifs, @AnnMaryGeorge7 were present in full force to ensure coordination with authorities at @ParisAeroport. Keeping in mind the #Covid19 protocols, check in started 5 hours before boarding and completed before time (2/16)

Air stewards and hostesses in full PPE gear informed everyone before takeoff that there would be no interaction with anyone during the flight. Food packets (3 - 2 French and 1 Indian) and water for the duration of the entire journey was on our seats. (3/16)

Just concluded a detailed review meeting of #VandeBharatMission. Thank Team MEA, @MoCA_GoI, DMA, @airindiain, MHA, Bureau of Immigration for their participation and contribution.

Focus of meeting was to ramp up the scale of #VBM and enhance its efficiency.

Key points from the meeting:

1. Lessons learnt from #VBM performance so far of 173 flights and 3 ships covering 34 countries.

2. Further expanding Phase 2 of #VBM (17 May to 13 June) currently underway. Will target 100,000 passengers from 60 countries.

3. Preparations for 3rd phase - widening our footprint has commenced.

4. Increase in entry points and expanded feeder flights being planned.

5. Welcome approval of chartered flights from today.

6. Indians returning through land borders has started today.

Landed in Delhi. Waited for ~3 hours in the flight afterwhich we were told there is another aircraft been arranged due to a tech fault. Waiting since ~6 hours now. It’s very tough to wear the shield and the mask all thru out. Very suffocating. No ventilation / AC in the airport

After ~9 hours of wait, we were asked to board another AI ✈️ at the delhi airport. Walking from one gate to another with shields and masks amidst high security felt abnormal. There was tension in the air.

I have raised this issue on the 15th of May. While rest of the states are aggressively working towards getting back their stranded citizens, @CMOMaharashtra has permitted only has only 1 flight in Phase 2 of #VandeBharatMission. (2/3)

It's going to be an long arduous wait for 1000's of Maharasthrians who are waiting to come back home..only because GoM is excruciatingly slow & inconsistent with its policies, and inexplicably not permitting additional flights under
#VandeBharatMission to enter Mumbai. (3/3)

May 9th:Received an email from the Indian Embassy saying I’ve been selected based on electronic random process. We are asked to send the confirmation by end of day.

May 12th:Received a call from Air India and they’ve booked my ticket while i was on hold. I sincerely would like to appreciate the entire staff.
May15th:D-day. Flight at 11:25PM but At the airport by 3:30PM and 150 other people and here already.

Body temperature will be monitored and noted on passport before checkin. Just one carryon is allowed and it shouldn’t exceed 7kgs. Maintain good distance, please stand on the cross signs that are marked. A new form will provided and and we would submit it at the time of checkin.
