✝️ ⛪️ I speak to a lot of Christians when I do outreach.

Today, my Christian friend Benny writes a thread to show that kindness towards #animals should be an important part of any Christian's moral outlook.

1/35 - Christians often claim that God endorses meat eating when He grants them dominion over creation in Genesis 1.

🚫 But this is NOT what “dominion” means.

“Dominion” simply means sovereignty or rulership. But there can be bad rulers as well as good rulers.
2/35 - ❓ The question is what kind of dominion God wants us to have.

In Genesis, God doesn’t give us dominion so that we can act as tyrants, subjecting our fellow creatures to horrifying abuses in order to satisfy our material pleasures.

When I first started #Veganism, I was 41, healthy and athletic. I did yoga daily. You might have called me "fit."

But I was freezing cold, even in summer sun, lost my period and went flat chested.

Something was wrong.

I was starving myself "for the animals."
I wore padding to disguise my totally flat chest.

My cheeks were hollow.

I covered cystic acne with makeup.

My hair fell out so I wore wigs.

I got collagen to fill my deep nasolabial folds.

So much denial.
I compared my body to fashion models, celebrities like Madonna or Sarah Jessica Parker. I didn't think I was too thin.

But the lack of body fat lead to hormonal issues.

A 🧵

There have been lots of debates recently about the meaning of Veganism.

Sadly many people still think Veganism is a diet.

Others think that Veganism is only about ending the farming of animals for food products.

But Veganism is much more than this. #mondaythoughts Image
Veganism recognises that all creatures are sentient & that every living creature has the right to live their life free from exploitation, persecution & suffering.

#veganism #Sentience Image
When we know this fact & we fully see the lives that suffer at the hand of humans, we change & we become empathic to those individuals & their lives.

We evolve and denounce anthropocentrism & speciesism. Image

This week, people have been discussing if eating #oysters conflicts with following a plant-based diet.

Today, we’re taking a look at the definition of sentience and #veganism—and at animal species that have been proven to be more sentient than humans used to think. 👇1/14 Image
Although there is legal and scientific disagreement about #sentience, there are some standards that are broadly accepted.

According to @SentienceInst, sentience is simply the ability to have positive and negative experiences, including pain. 2/14

The concept of animal #sentience is important for ethical reasons.

If #animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain, most humans would agree that it is morally wrong to cause unnecessary pain or suffering to them. 3/14

Happy to share that our new paper is now out in @ProgHumGeog: 'Vegan food geographies and the rise of Big Veganism' w/ Tara Garnett & @jsplorimer
journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
We argue #foodgeographers are well placed to critically examine recent corporate trends of #vegan mainstreaming - what we term Big Veganism - but that this subdiscpline of geog has been largely disconnected from increasingly diverse work on #veganism elsewhere in social sciences
The paper first reviews three key themes from work in vegan studies that have critically explored the opportunities & tensions of vegan mainstreaming: 1) multiple contested modes of veganism; 2) veganism as praxis in place; & 3) the rise of corporate veganism

Do you eat meat or other animal products?
Should you?

Last month, I defended my PhD thesis about perceptions of vegetarians and vegans (short: veg*ns) in promoting #plantbased diets.

Why did I pursue this topic and what did I discover?
Find out in this #ThesisThread.

1/20
Why this topic? The widespread consumption of animal products🥓🥛🍳causes a lot of harm:
🐖billions of animals suffer & die each year
🌍it damages planetary health
💙threatens public health
📽️tinyurl.com/et4f5jf4

👨‍🔬To reduce these harms, we can adopt #plantbased diets

2/20
Nevertheless...

📢Calls for change by those who do not eat meat #vegetarians or other animal products #vegans are often challenged by the majority of people who continue to eat meat #omnivores.

❓How can veg*ns attract more omnivores and promote #plantbased diets?

It's probably a pretty low bar, but I got the transcript of my conversation with Zerzan up on the anarchist library which makes me happy:
theanarchistlibrary.org/library/ishkah…
#anprim #anticiv #directaction #JohnZerzan #anarchism #socialism #SaulNewman #schooling #solarpunk #vegan #veganism
@rechelon's essay on anti-civ was really valuable going into the conversation and @SolarpunkA thanks for the work you do, as I was basically arguing for a solarpunk future as the highest realisation of our character virtues, so worth working through modern day suffering. #Zerzan

1/n Am I happy to have been completely exonerated by a 7-month investigation into complaints made against me and the former Vice Chair? And that @TheVeganSociety has issued a public statement to that effect (i.e. vegansociety.com/investigation-…)?

Far from it...
#vegan #vegans #veganism
2/n While @TheVeganSociety proudly tweeted that it had "joined the @CharityAgstHate initiative to challenge posts that incite hate... on #SocialMedia", it took no meaningful action when a disabled Black non-binary trustee was targeted on account of such protected characteristics.
3/n What was this if not a coordinated campaign of racist, transphobic, and ableist bullying against the @TheVeganSociety's youngest voluntary trustee, but which the society (a certain section of Council, in particular) seems willing to ignore?

Dear @VegNews: I am shocked that you carried the statement by the authors of #ThugKitchen announcing their name change in your 2020 holiday issue without providing any context about their racist practices and cultural appropriation over the past 8 years. 1/x
#TheBeardedVegans offered a definitive two-part series on Thug Kitchen exposing this. They explain, "Matt and Michelle, the couple behind #ThugKitchen made a habit of slyly dodging their critics & employing a litany of gaslighting techniques to explain away their behavior." 2/x

This is a second thread for #white #vegans & #animalrights activists who recognize we are often the problem in the way we articulate issues having to do with the other animals. What if white privilege has influenced the way we have framed issues around veganism and animal rights?
This is a part of journal entry from the early 1980s when I was involved in a very difficult battle around integrated housing and racism. I wrote “Racists who do not see that they are being racist. If this is true as a paradigm—racists do not see racism... Image
...what is there about me that is racist but I fail to see it?"
I tried to learn a methodology for confronting that racism that goes unacknowledged: Assume your own ignorance & if you have received feedback that something you said or did or endorsed was racist—hear the critique.

A (short) Thread on #Urbanism

Premise:

#TaditionalUrbanism is far more sustainable, more graceful, cheaper, and encourages a more ethical and ecological way of living than #ModernUrbanism. ImageImage
The return to traditional architecture and settlement patterns is an overwhelming necessity – yet we are incentivized to focus on cosmetic solutions. We think we need veganism, we think we need “green” skyscrapers, we think we need “green” fuel.

Nonsense. Image
We don’t need #veganism; we need to re-encourage local, small scale and ecologically-sensitive farming. It’s not about changing your diet; it’s about changing – going back to – the way we (used to) generate food.

Something I think about a lot is how #veganism interacts with privilege. Veganism for wealthy, white Americans is very different from veganism for other demographics. When communicating your activism, this is such an important aspect to consider regarding your audience.
When you’re poor, yes rice and beans are cheap but that gets exhausting after a while. For many in rural areas, finding options is very limited. It’s an extra weight removing yourself from already small social circles.
I don’t think this justifies killing animals for consumption, but it’s a different narrative from somebody with a reasonable salary in a populated city.
