THREAD LUNGO:

Day 379 of #Russia's attack on #Ukraine, here's my daily thread.

The fierce fighting around #Bakhmut and other hotspots in the east continues.

Bakhmut is 35 miles (55km) from #Kadiivka in #Luhansk region which has been under Russian control since 2014.
35 miles in 379 days!
Yesterday's link for the thread is here⬇️
Luckily, a quiet day with #Georgia's heavily Russian influenced Govt taking most of the headlines.

More death and destruction from #Russia already this morning.

Four people are dead in #Lviv region after local officials say a rocket hit a residential area.

Rescuers are still searching debris in #Zolochiv.

Drug checking is a #harmreduction tool aimed at combatting the dangerous consequences of illicit #druguse. However, some critics say that it actually promotes drug use – but they’d be wrong!

Let’s find out why 👉💡🧵:
First of all, consuming illicit substances from the black market comes with huge risks: unknown dosage and purity, the presence of unexpected (potentially dangerous!) adulterants, and the constant influx of new, unresearched chemicals. #DrugChecking directly combats these risks.
But what exactly is drug checking?
It is the chemical analysis of substances which, according to the @EMCDDA, allow drug users to receive “information on the content of the samples as well as advice, and, in some cases, counseling or brief interventions.”

Today's Eurasia Lunch series is chaired by @FletcherSchool visiting scholar Yury Nadtochey who will speak about ways to manage escalation risks between #Russia and the West. #AcademicTwitter

More about the visiting scholars here: sites.tufts.edu/fletcherrussia…
Why do we need confidence-building measures to manage conflict, asks Yury Nadtochey?

"There are ways to tackle asymmetry of information and there is a basis for decision-making, based on social norms and not just Benefits-Cost Analysis." @FletcherSchool
.@FletcherSchool @FletcherRussia visiting scholar Yury Nadtochey discusses if confidence-building measures prevent inadvertent war?

"Only if there is a strong desire among conflicted parties to maintain peace," Nadtochey adds. #AcademicTwitter

1. Yesterday, during the #Economic #Forum in #Karpacz #Poland, Jaroslaw #Kaczynski uttered categorical words: "Western #Europe is culturally alien to us".

Let us take Kaczynski's words as an opportunity to recall an extremely important thread.

Let us recount what he said.
2. You can see #Kaczynski during discussion panel together with MEPs @ZdzKrasnodebski and Ryszard Legutko, his two main informal advisors on ideological and international issues.

"The threat to our sovereignty from the West is greater than from the East." - claimed Krasnodebski.
3. A lot of attention has been paid to #Kaczynski's shoes, but - let's face it - while embarrassing, that's not what's most important

Just gone midnight (UK time) and the weekend already.

I'm starting the daily thread covering #Russia's war earlier than usual as there are attacks taking place right now on #Ukraine

It's Day 178 of the full invasion of its peaceful neighbour
#StopRussia

Right now ALL of #Ukraine is experiencing air raid warnings, but not everything is the same as usual.

A few minutes ago, at the end of yesterday's thread, I reported on explosions in occupied #Melitopol, but plenty of missiles being fired from #Russia into free Ukraine...
However, it seems as though #Russia's OWN air defences have taken out some of their own missiles leaving #Belgorod!

Difficult to confirm this, but looking at confirmed radar reports of missiles being fired from Russian territory, towards east #Ukraine this does seem very likely.

LONG 🧵 ON UKRAINIAN REFUGEES ABROAD 🇺🇦
I said I would write this "soon" & that was like a month ago... but here we are. The bottom line: pls share this, please volunteer, please donate, we're over four months into the #war & people still need to flee & need help abroad

1/22
So I've spent a considerable amount of time in the past months as a volunteer in arrival centres for #Ukrainian refugees in both #Vienna and #Berlin. What I'm saying here is from my experience in these places, but the situation is pretty similar everywhere.
We all remember the images from the very first days of the invasion. The streams of people at the border, the buses coming to pick them up, the volunteers from all over the world, the train stations of Europe with hastily set up arrival centres. The situation has changed much...

ICYMI: @USAmbOSCE Michael Carpenter accuses #Russia of exploiting extremism & ultranationalism

"This far-right ultranationalism is in fact being cultivated as a tool of war" he said in a speech to the @OSCE Permanent Council in #Vienna
"The utter contempt shown by such large numbers of #Russia’s soldiers for the humanity of #Ukraine’s elderly, women, & children is the direct outcome of feeding its forces a pack of lies...&the inculcation of ultranationalist & dehumanizing ideas among its troops" per @USAmbOSCE
Extremist / Ultranationalist "ideology has long been propagated inside #Russia" per @USAmbOSCE

"The Kremlin’s ultranationalist agenda has also, at times, translated into support for neo-Nazi groups internationally aimed at destabilizing democratic countries"

During the three weeks of my stay in #Vienna, I heard several times the questions: "#Ukrainian and Russian languages are quite similar, aren't they?" and "Ukrainian and Russian are like different versions of German in Austria and Germany?". So, let me explain👇🏻
First of all, Ukrainian and Russian are different languages and by no means one language. Ukrainian is not a dialect of Russian. #Moscow has always tried to pretend that the Ukrainian and Russian languages are similar. The truth is that Russians do not even understand Ukrainian
Ukrainian is the language that most closely resembles #Belarusian with which it has 29 common characteristics. Furthermore, Ukrainians can easily understand #Polish, #Czech, #Slovak etc.

We have been talking a lot about the big first meeting of state parties to the TPNW, but what will actually be discussed? The provisional agenda was just adopted, here is what’s on the table. A 🧵 1/12 #nuclearban #Vienna Image
The meeting will begin by electing officers and with some introductions and statements from high level-officials, including UN secretary-general @antonioguterres 2/12
Then delegates will go through important elements like officially adopting the agenda, the rules of procedure, deciding on how to organize work, and a general exchange of views 3/12

I've spent the past ~7 weeks conducting interviews about anti-Covid-measures #protests in #Vienna with
- young adults participating in the protests
- participants in counter-protests
- journalists
- police officers
- affected individuals
a brief 🧵 with some selected results:
1/52 Easter break = a whole week without interviews: seems like a good time to reflect on the 37 I've had so far & drop some research notes here. They're semi-structured interviews with narrative elements.
2/52 Notes refer to my sample and aren't intended to generalize to the whole group!

📍Protesters: Because I was interested in young adults (< 30 y), this sample is particularly different from the population, as the protests here were mostly attended by middle aged/older people.

Thread🧵:
As I predicted two days ago, the Russian invasion of #Ukraine would directly affect the course of the negotiations in #Vienna on #Iran's nuclear program, which was declared frozen today.
1/6
To understand why, you can read the thread:👇
Signing the agreement would have meant a stab in the back for #Russia by opening the way for Iranian oil and gas to be pumped into the global market, which would turn the most dangerous Russian weapon against the West less severe.
2/6
#Iran #USA #EU #UK #NATO
A rejection of the agreement would create to the West anger and disappointment with all the economic and security concessions made by #France, #Germany and the #US, which in one way or another caused tension in western relations with #SaudiArabia and the #UAE.

In the last 48hrs, #Syria's banned almost all food exports, amid acute concern about the implications of war in #Ukraine.

#Syria is *deeply* reliant on staple food (esp. wheat) shipments from #Russia via the Black Sea. Those shipments (& #Russia financial aid) have 100% stopped.
Already, #Syria's fiscal crisis, energy shortages, unprecedented drought & the resulting crippled agricultural output had seen some aid figures warn of a famine in 2022.

#Putin's war on #Ukraine has just placed those fears on steroids -- I'm told #Damascus is extremely worried.
To make matters even worse, the war in #Ukraine has distracted international attention from #Syria & its acute humanitarian crises -- donor payments will almost certainly decline & future pledges will be [further] cut, just as the humanitarian suffering looks destined to worsen.

Do you know the story of #coffee?

Sure you get it from Starbucks or grind it at home but its story was not as simple as farm to pot

The story involves dancing goats, Fatwa, babtization, kings, revolutions, patriotism, Beethoven

Coffee has a rich & troubling history

☕️ Thread
1/ 1st, the legend:

Legend has it that an #Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi witnessed his goats gamboling after eating coffee shrub’s red fruit. Perplexed, Kaldi tried the fruit himself and realized the same effect on him. A monk witnessed it & took some of the fruit with him.
2/ Now, the history:

The coffee plant and fruit has been used for 1000s of years but it wasn’t until the 13 century when the beans were roasted, which sky rocketed its popularity. Coffee originated in Ethiopia but it was across the Red Sea, in #Yemen, it was first cultivated.

It was on 11th September 1683, when Europeans drove the Islamic invader from the gates of #Vienna. The proud #Turkish Army was humiliated.

The battle of Vienna was the turning point in the struggle against Muslim attempts to conquer Europe.

Since the Battle of Vienna the military might of the Ottoman empire fell into continuous decline.

Al-Qaeda chose the anniversary of this event to show the world that the Muslim forces were back in business again.

They remembered and we...??

1/ When a government effectively stops immigration using an unspoken (racist & xenophobic) policy as simple as — not picking up the phone

Austria allows entry from Germany without quarantine from Wednesday. Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein said this with reference to a new regulation. However, proof of vaccination, testing or recovery remains mandatory.
"In many countries, the number of infections is falling, so we can also simplify entry into Austria in parallel to the opening steps in the country," said Mückstein.
Vaccines that have been approved by the EU Medicines Agency EMA or have successfully passed the relevant process of the World Health Organization are recognized as proof of vaccination. If a test cannot be presented, it must be done in Austria within 24 hours.
