The definition of ideology is that it is immune to empirical refutation. Facts literally bounce off it.
2/ Scientists who have to pay attention to how reality works & not ideological words are devastatingly clear as to which governments least followed science in dealing with COVID-19.

3/ Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, or find prettier ways to talk about it, or ignore it, doesn't go away. The 21stC is the Age of Consequences — of reality biting back, and we must learn to bend to its will. #viraltime #climatechange

Need FAST turn around of tests - same day - so you can isolate & not infect others. More than 2 days, as is sadly too common is just Kabuki theatre. With that delay, a country is just collecting statistics & not actually BREAKING transmission-chains

US is moving towards Kabuki Theatre testing. Turn-around time has slowed to 4-8 days. Politicians tout test #, but
“if you don’t get results back in a day or so, outbreaks really can’t be stopped w/out isolating & quarantining all contacts preemptively”

Kabuki Theatre testing (i.e slow turn-around ) makes contact-tracing to stop new infections infeasible. It turns all of us into Person C instead of Person B. In #viraltime, we don't make the time, the virus makes the time and it ticks ferociously fast.

"In the end, Trump did what he said. He built a wall around 🇺🇸 & made the world pay for it. He just never told Americans that they’d be stuck inside. Welcome to the Plague States of 🇺🇸. You can check out, but you can never leave"

"Given than you need a functioning government to manage this pandemic, that's [2021] the soonest Americans can get one.

It’s far too late.

...In the absence of a humane government, America is now ruled by COVID-19. Welcome to the Plague States of America." 2/ Image
Travel out of infected Northeast & from Europe accelerated spread nationwide in Feb/March. Exodus from NY/NJ area especially by affluent sparked outbreaks. Its a comprehensive failure of national strategy, not of individual states. 3/ nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Investigative WSJ @shalini report on the catastrophe of New York is also a blaring "DO NOT DO THIS " guideline for hospitals in India, Brazil, Mexico, S Africa etc. Many 10000s of deaths can be avoided. Thread 1/

Firstly, New York has been an off-the-scale disaster in terms of deaths and covid cases. Its wealth, expertise and resources did very little to insulate its ppl from catastrophic mismanagement. It took almost 100 days to control the epidemic. 2/
It was clear to most ppl by March that a dense city like New York would need to adopt the Wuhan model of Corona hotels. Lockdown was necessary but not sufficient to stop infections. It took the city two full months to roll it out. Tragic saga here ⬇️3/

Sobering report. Standard epidemiological protocol: Isolate virus; contact-tracing & testing of ppl; Quarantine infected #Coronavirus must be seen in terms of State Capacity & Public Health axis. Pointless along authoritarian-democratic axis when set of things done is similar.
Global Cooperation between virologists, health workers thru WHO & China's & US CDC has been a shining example to humanity. Important to take a step back and remember that we are in a forever war w microbes. Many more of them than us... #coronavirus
