The Voice is about empowering communities, not the same privileged few. Here's Warren (@nyunggai) supporting $500m in cuts to community programs in 2014 while arguing for $600m more. His finger prints are all over the failure to close the gap 🧵#auspol #VoteYes #VoiceToParliament
This was under the Indigenous Advancement Strategy. Abbott's landmark policy that brought Indigenous affairs into PM&C & gutted community support. The IAS was key reason behind many calling for change at the regional dialogues leading to Uluru #auspol #VoteYes #VoiceToParliament
Warren was chair of the PM's advisory council, later a candidate for the Coalition under another PM. Here he justifies cuts, but also refuses to answer questions about cuts to vital community programs with lasting negative impacts #auspol #VoteYes #VoiceToParliament

[A Thread] The NT crime wave.

Alcohol in indigenous communities has been problematic for as long as anyone can remember. Nor is it unique to Australia. I've seen it in Inuit communities in Canada and Greenland. #auspol 1/8
In 2012, the Gillard Labor government implemented its Stronger Futures program to help address the issue in the NT. It did not eliminate the problem but it certainly significantly reduced it to more manageable levels. #auspol 2/8
Stronger futures was a 10 year fully funded program. It expired in mid 2022 under the Morrison Liberal "government", that refused to renew it, choosing to save money by winding it up. As a direct result alcohol induced crime increased again. #auspol 3/8

I was reading up on some history this wk, mainly looking at how long First Nations have been calling for a Voice

I was amazed to find Rupert Murdoch's name pop up, from an event that happened in 1957. Quite pertinent today considering News Corp's position on #Voice

Al Grassby:

"The father of Australian multiculturalism."
A Labor hero.
"This website is managed by the NSW Department of Education on behalf of all Australian schools."

It says Grassby was responsible for "exclusion of racially selected sporting teams."

'Racially selected sporting teams' is now called multiculturalism. 😂
