Local councils have started publishing data on how many voters were turned away last Thursday because they didn't have acceptable ID.

In Walsall, 1240 were turned away, 473 returned with ID, so 767 didn't vote.

In Bradford 1261 turned away , 763 returned, 498 didn't vote.
The figures provided by these two councils are among the highest published so far, but there is clear evidence that across England, people did not vote due to a lack of ID.
The stats only tell part of the story, too, as some councils employed ppl outside polling stations who didn't record how many voters were turned away. A fuller picture is expected from the Electoral Commission next month.

V4CE’s stand on May 4, 2023 Elections:

The insistence on Voter IDs was an affront to UK's democracy and cast a shadow on the process when voters found out on election day that to cast their votes they would actually require a form of Voter ID.

#VoterIDandUKElections2023 Image
The echoes of that affront on the voting process reverberated all the way to the US where @nytimes ran a piece with the caption: Voter ID Rules Are Raising Hackles in Britain nytimes.com/2023/05/03/wor…

A UK Guardian piece called it a threat to democracy.

@TheNatPulse alluded to concerns as “leftist hysteria” in a piece captioned - “England Introduced Voter ID This Week. There Wasn’t ‘Mass Disenfranchisement’, Despite Leftist Hysteria”

Ok, I’m applying for a 16-25 railcard for my son. It requires a photo. It requires PROOF OF ID to get one.

Tell me again why a 16-25 railcard isn’t valid ID to vote but all of these are??

I’ve signed this petition on just this issue! 👇🏼
This is the crux of the issue

Your information is on the electoral roll. They have your personal details and know you’re eligible

Showing ID at the polling station should be simply a case of showing your name, and photo on the ID match your actual face and name on their list

While there is #POCSOAct to protect children from being sexually exploited and to protect them, #PersonalLaws are just taking away that protection from children. This is exactly why #UCC #UniformCivilCode becomes an urgent need.

Grounds for denying someone who *has* ID from voting this May include: polling staff deeming "the photograph was not a good likeness," believing the ID to be a forgery, and saying "the elector failed to answer the prescribed questions satisfactorily" What could possibly go wrong?
There will be a new member of staff in *every* polling station whose role is specifically to check people's ID. At enormous cost to all of us. Imagine if we'd spent those millions on boosting voter registration or turnout?
Just some of the steps polling station staff will have to take before handing ANY voter their ballot paper in England this May. I thought the government liked 'cutting red tape'? #voterID

Labour are backtracking on opposition to compulsory photo ID at polling stations from next May. £180m over ten years to solve a problem which barely exists! Any concerns about identification could be achieved at nil or minimal cost. This is #votersupression #voterID
Lib Dem opposition to spending £180m on making everyone have the requisite photo ID for elections from next May lost by 63 to 210.@LabourLordsUK abstained. This is letting the Conservatives get away with #votersuppression @LibDemPeers opposed it. Well done @KathPinnock
Labour will regret this next May and at the general election. Why doesn’t @KeirStarmerPM understand this?

A quick recap on the facts about #voterid and fraud in Britain....
ℹ️ There is no evidence of voter fraud - the problem which #voterid is supposed to solve

One source of evidence are poll worker surveys. Our academic study found that only 0.7 of poll workers suspected a possible case in their polling station.

Today's #SCOTUS decision in #Berger is a major victory for legislatures across the country seeking to intervene in litigation to defend their duly enacted laws, especially when the official charged with defending the law might not do so for political or ideological reasons. 🧵 1/
A brief background on the case: The #NorthCarolina legislature enacted a statute authorizing them to intervene in lawsuits to ensure its duly enacted laws are vigorously defended in court after the state AG refused to defend laws in the past. 2/
Prior to this law, the North Carolina Attorney General refused to defend the state's previous #VoterID law because he didn't agree with the policy, and the law was ultimately enjoined. 3/

The Government's consultation on its proposed 'overhaul' of our #HumanRightsAct closes tomorrow.

This isn’t a plan to improve the system.

It’s an attempt to weaken everyone's human rights and hide from accountability for their actions.

⬇️EXPLAINER🧵 libertyhumanrights.org.uk/issue/explaine…
THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT

In a functioning democracy, people must be able to hold the powerful to account.

The #HumanRightsAct enables everyone in the UK to do just that and stand up for our rights when public authorities – like Gov + local councils – fall short.
The #HumanRightsAct protects us from misuse of power no matter who we are.

And it's helped bring a culture of respecting human rights into hospitals, schools, care homes, and housing associations – changing the way thousands of people are treated and supported.

ELECTIONS BILL: VoterID disenfranchises MILLIONS of Labour voters, MILLIONS, let that sink in
Read 18 tweets
This afternoon the Commons is debating the Government's controversial #ElectionsBill. This bill will reduce the independence of the Electoral Commission, ban those without the right ID from voting and change the electoral system for Mayors and PCCs electoral-reform.org.uk/the-government…
Banning those without the right sorts of ID from voting could cost up to £180,000,000 a decade, with millions alone being spent on bigger poll cards to explain the complicated rules. Around 2.1 million people lack the necessary ID according to the government’s own research.
Disadvantaged groups, like the unemployed, those renting from a local authority and disabled people are less likely to have ID. The bill expects them to travel to, sometimes distant, local council offices to request alternative forms of ID.

1/ Dems are attempting to gut the Senate #filibuster rule—used for nearly 200 years to ensure bipartisanship & consensus-driven decision making—in order to force their federal takeover of elections into law via #HR4.

Lean more about the Dem power grab ⤵️

electiontransparency.org/2021/08/27/the…
2/ #HR4 is a grab-bag of liberal policies that would effectively abolish #voterID, subject states to crushing mandates & penalize them for cleaning up outdated voting procedures.

Their goal? Rig the system in Dems' favor & silence conservative voices to preserve their power.
3/ #HR4 would force states to seek permission from the federal gov't to pass/change their election laws—giving the Biden admin veto authority over laws they don't like.

In reality, it's never been easier for Americans of every voting group to register & vote than it is today,

In advance of the #ForThePeopleAct vote tomorrow, re-upping this thread on our (forthcoming at @The_JOP) paper on #VoterID laws. We show Black and Latinx voters would be disproportionately likely to be turned away from the polls under the strictest ID statues.
Our findings coincide with forthcoming work by @phoebehennn, @mieuque, and @MichaelLMorse, who also find Black and Latinx voters are far more likely than whites to show up at the polls without qualifying ID. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
The reason we know about these racially disparate impacts is because in both TX and MI voters can complete a sworn statement (and in TX, present other ID) and then vote via a regular ballot. Giving voters in all strict ID states this option is one part of the #ForThePeopleAct.

Rather than using the slimmest majority in modern history to enact bills that would fix problems in our election system, Democrats seem maniacally focused on making sure they maintain power.

#HR1 is a straight up power grab. #electionintegrity washingtontimes.com/news/2021/may/…
Many solutions that until recently had bipartisan support as set forth by the Carter-Baker Commission have been set aflame by the Democrats drunk with power and beholden to the radical left.
#HR1 would codify many of the very problems America experienced in 2020 & leaves the door wide open to election fraud. Instead of bringing America together, this bill would pull us further apart as elections would become more politicized, as Dems use #SB1 to secure lasting power.

Today was my first opportunity to challenge the government as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons. The government controls most of the parliamentary timetable, so weekly Business Questions are an opportunity to scrutinise these decisions closely (THREAD).
Up against my opposite number Jacob Rees Mogg, I first asked about the government’s attempts to restrict voting through their #VoterID proposals. This is a scandalous attack on democracy.
Next, social care. This is more urgent than ever. 659 days since Prime Minister said he had a plan to fix it, 10 years since Dilnot Commission proposed such a plan. When will the govt act?

The Electoral Integrity Bill: which introduces #VoterID will prevent many thousands of people voting, despite no evidence of systemic ballot box fraud and only 1 fraud conviction per 20 million votes cast in the last 2 General Elections.

2) #2008Election

To look ahead, we need to look back. 2008 is a good frame of reference to start with. #HopeAndChange 1st black, yada, yada.

Impressive, but pales in comparison to Reagan's #MorningInAmerica landslide.

Simply put , Middle America didn't care for fundamentally changing America.

And RINO @PierrEDelectO threw the race…😡👇

The Black vote in #Wisconsin statewide fell by a mind-blowing 24.5 percent between 2012 and 2016 when the state's new #VoterID law hit. gregpalast.com/wisconsin-eats… Image
Trump took #Wisconsin by a mere 22,000 votes out of 3 million cast in 2016. The loss of Black and student votes due to the ID law cost at minimum 61,274 votes, almost three times Trump’s plurality. gregpalast.com/wisconsin-eats… Image
And that estimate of the loss is low. I’ve left out the Latinx voters who are growing near to the size of the Black population. Any way you calculate it, the show-me-your-papers #VoterID tactic won #Wisconsin, not the voters. gregpalast.com/wisconsin-eats…
