Be on the lookout for a new 2023 Washington initiative effort called @letsgowa, led by wealthy conservative investor Brian Heywood.

You'll probably start seeing paid signature gatherers for Heywood's 11 (!) initiatives soon. Here's why you should decline to sign all of them. 👇🏻
I-1474 would overturn policing reforms that @RepJesseJohnson championed in the Legislature. It's a lie that police can't pursue suspects under the new policies, but it's a lie they're sticking with for 2023 just like they tried to in the 2022 elections too.
I-1510 recategorizes drug possession from a misdemeanor to a felony "punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW by up to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to $10,000, or both." Hi, 1982 called. This would result in more incarceration and wouldn't get to the roots of addiction issues.

NEW update in #WA03, Clark County ballot results:

@MGPforCongress: +7,419
@joekent16jan19: +7,401

Net is D+18

#waelex #MidtermElections2022
Unlike the previous batches, this result did not skew Republican.

These are nearly 15,000 ballots today from Clark.

Another drop expected soon from Thurston county, which could skew more in Kent's favor.
Thurston County in #WA03 now reporting:

@MGPforCongress: +378
@joekent16jan19: +734

Net is R+356.

NEW update in #WA03, Clark County's 20,000 ballot drop:

@MGPforCongress: +12,158
@joekent16jan19: +12,316

Net is R+158, barely more than 50%.

#waelex #MidtermElections2022
With these totals,

It's clear the last few days have skewed R, as the Kent campaign had hoped, but it's hard to see him closing this 5,000-vote gap.

This puts Clark still around 25,000 ballots, but the numbers below remain about the same.

Happy to be corrected here by others who have crunching these numbers.

But if we say there are about 33,200 ballots left, Kent needs to win 21600-ish of those ...about 65% of the remaining ballots. #waelex #WA03

It was a very, very bad night for ranked choice voting in Washington State. #waelex

RCV campaigns are currently failing in Clark County, in San Juan County, and Seattle.

Let’d start with San Juan:

Proposition No. 3, concerning ranked choice voting for certain County officers Image
In Clark County:

Proposed Charter Amendment No. 10, Concerning Ranked-Choice Voting for County Elected Positions Image
And Seattle, where there was a two-part question which asked if Seattle should switch to an alternative voting method and whether it should be approval voting or ranked choice voting:

City of Seattle Proposition Nos. 1A and 1B
(Part 1 asked if there should be a switch) Image

It really does make you wonder. WA Dems are sending out an SOS on the SoS race.
As senate transportation chair Steve Hobbs was highway-obsessed and a huge impediment to getting a package that focused on transit, safe streets, and climate. Hobbs simply is not a climate leader. theurbanist.org/2021/04/12/fiv…
Hobbs has tried to spin his record since, but the fact remains that it was not one of climate action or of fix-it-first discipline. #ClimateCrisis #NoNewHighways theurbanist.org/2021/05/24/sen…

Yesterday’s @Crosscut story on #evenyearelections had a revealing quote from @ReaganDunn. He said:

“I think this hurts, ever so subtly, the Republican Party's chances of winning local office.”

That’s an actual quote, folks. You can read it right here:

crosscut.com/politics/2022/…
Essentially, Reagan is admitting his opposition to our charter amendment is based on his belief that more voters participating in county elections — and a more diverse electorate — will make it harder for Republicans like him to win. They insist on a rigged playing field. #waelex
It is important to remember that King County elections are officially “nonpartisan.” No party labels on the ballot. Why is that? Well, a few years back, *Republicans* orchestrated a charter change to remove party labels, hoping it would make them more competitive. It didn’t work.

King County Council currently taking up our proposal to move elections for twelve county offices to #evenyears. #walex @KCCKohlWelles is speaking in favor, saying she strongly supports it.
Now, @KccClaudia is explaining how we will see better and more diverse turnout for our county-level offices if we adopt this charter amendment. #walex
Councilmember @reagandunn calls the proposal “thoughtful” and “well-intentioned” but argues that having more people voting doesn’t necessarily mean we have a more “informed” electorate. 🙁 We disagree: A smaller electorate doesn’t equal a more informed electorate.

Short thread: (1/5) If SCOTUS indeed is about to overturn Roe, it will put a spotlight on contrasting views of @SmileyForWA and @PattyMurray in WA's 2022 Senate race. #waelex
(2/5) Smiley, the likely GOP challenger to WA's five term senior senator Murray, reportedly backed Texas law banning virtually all abortions thehill.com/homenews/campa…
(3/5) But in an interview with me in Feb. she backed off that view, saying she didn't support the TX law, which allows individuals to sue anyone aiding an abortion seattletimes.com/seattle-news/p…

The four members of the Washington Redistricting Commission released draft Congressional maps today. As with the legislative maps, we each prioritized different values. Mine focused on fair representation and competition. Here's a little thread. #waleg #waelex
At the moment, Washington has one out of 10 Congressional districts where a majority of residents are people of color. Statewide, more than 1/3 of residents are people of color.
While drawing many draft maps, I realized that we could in fact draw two compact, contiguous districts where a majority are people are of color. Here's the first one. It takes the 10th CD from Tacoma up the I-5 corridor to Burien.

Yesterday the four voting commissioners on the Washington redistricting commission released proposed legislative maps. Here's a little thread on something I really care about--competitive elections. #waleg #waelex
Each map has pros and cons, and each commissioner focused on different goods. My top focus was drawing as many competitive districts as possible. One salve for hyper-partisanship and division is more competitive elections.
Competitive districts are so important. Get rid of them and you have elections without choices. Increase their number and you encourage parties to recruit outstanding candidates who must appeal to voters across the spectrum.

From @secstatewa: "The Office of the Secretary of State over the weekend was made aware of a website that lists Washington state’s elections director among election officials nationwide who the site creators claim “have aided and abetted the fraudulent election against Trump.”
"The site includes images of the officials, with crosshairs over their profiles, and home and email addresses. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have been notified, as well as the Fusion Center in Washington state."
@KimWyman12: “This continued escalation of harassing and threatening behavior in the public sphere has to stop. Sites like this are appalling, and have no space in our democracy and the peaceful transition of power."

Looks like @JoeBiden is heading to big #LittleTuesday wins in Michigan, Missouri, and Mississippi. Hard to know whether we’ll be able to predict #WashingtonPrimary (second biggest prize today) tonight. Vote by mail is cool, but slow. So don’t panic, America. #Q13FOX #waelex
The @washdems have cautioned local media against jumping to primary-night conclusions in Washington. Noting that late ballot returns may skew much different than early ones, given so many campaigns folded over past 10 days. Keep in mind voters here have had ballots for 2+ weeks.
As such, the Washington state Democratic Party has said it will NOT make any official delegate allocations tonight, but will wait (possibly weeks!) until results are finalized. #WashingtonPrimary #Q13FOX #waelex
