27 MAY 1944 – BATTLE OF BIAK ISLAND BEGINS #WWII

As GEN Douglas MacArthur’s forces advanced towards the Philippines, they required airstrips which could accommodate heavy bombers. The airfields on Biak Island, at the western end of New Guinea, made the island a prime target. Image
On 27 MAY the 41st ID began its attack when the first wave landed as planned, but strong currents pushed follow-on units west of their designated beaches. The Japanese garrison was surprised and offered little early resistance.

With the establishment of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in World War II, women entered military service as something other than nurses for the first time.

The original concept for the WAAC was to assign women to critical non-combat roles and “free a man to fight.” They were expressly excluded from combat-related duties, and – as the name "auxiliary" implied – were not considered a formal part of the Army.

However, Army Chief of Staff GEN George C. Marshall experimented with allowing women to serve in a limited combat role as range-finder operators with anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) units of the Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) in the Continental United States beginning in 1942.

Culp Hobby’s service to the nation began in 1941, when she became the leader of the War Dept. Women’s Interest Section. She held this role until 1942, when she was appointed to lead the new Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), an Army auxiliary meant to fill manpower gaps.

After winning the Battle of the Bulge, the U.S. Army began advancing towards Germany across several of region’s major rivers, most of which had dams that needed to be captured to prevent the enemy from causing major flooding. ImageImage
LTG William Simpon’s 9th Army planned Operation GRENADE to cross the Roer River and link up with Allied forces advancing from Holland, while LTG Courtney Hodges’ 1st Army used the 78th ID to secure the Schwammenauel Dam, supported by elements of the 82d ABD and the 7th AD.
Jumping off early in the morning of 5 FEB, American soldiers attacked into the Hurtgen Forest for the first time since DEC 1944. Although its progress was hampered by rough terrain and dense forests, the 78th Division made steady, if slow, progress.
