Today, on #LatinaEqualPayDay, we celebrate the contributions of Latinas to the American economy and call attention to the work we must do to ensure all people earn equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender or race. 💰#LEPD #WageGap #Trabajadoras
•Over a 40-year career, Latinas on average lose more than $1M lifetime earnings due to pay inequity, earning 57 cents to every dollar earned by the average non-Hispanic white man. COVID has deepened the wage gap, and today nearly 17% of adult Latinas are living in poverty.
This lost income exacerbates the racial wealth gap and impedes Latinas’ ability to support their families and build emergency funds to endure challenges like the current pandemic.

In observance of #LatinaEqualPayDay, @UCLAlatino stresses that Latinas are fundamental to a healthy, productive national workforce that invigorates the U.S. economy. (1/4)
Yet on average, #Latinas see over $1.8 million in lost wages over a 40 year career, & they are only paid 55 cents for every dollar that a white man is paid. (2/4) ImageImage
The #wagegap is even larger for Latina mothers. In CA, Latina mothers only make 36 cents for every dollar made by white, non-Latino fathers. The #motherhoodpenalty is worse for #Latinas. (3/4) Image

I want to pull out some of the great labor provisions in the House #BuildBackBetterAct

Tho reconciliation rules prevent Congress from completely re-balancing Corporate V Labor power, this bill is a big win for workers
🧵
First, the @EdLaborCmte bill cracks down on Wage Theft, with hefty new fines (10X the old fines!) the @USDOL can impose when employers steal from their workers

This will make employers think twice and obey overtime and min wage laws
Its important because @JaniceFine6 @jennround @Daniel_J_Galvin @RutgersCIWO documented that wage theft:
-is quite common
-the avg violation steals 20% of a workers wage
-affects women and people of color most, exacerbating the #WageGap

This morning, as I prepare my coffee, let me tell you a tale of a time when I was affected by the #wagegap. This one’s a doozy.

When I first became an #infosec analyst, the #CISO had intended that I make $65k which was a fair wage for the position, region, and etc.

1/?
The #IT management and #HR had all agree and the paperwork was printed out. The #CTO volunteered to send it to me, even though he was technically in a separate department.

Now, I didn’t know that the wage was supposed to be $65k, I wasn’t a part of these convos.

2/?
At the time, I was just making $14 an hour on their HelpDesk knowing that I would soon be promoted and was awaiting to sign off on it.

When the CTO delivered the paperwork to me, the amount I signed off on was $45k. I even said, “Hm. Seems low?” And he didn’t say anything.

This is the #DemPartyPlatform for 2020.This part deals with building a #StrongerFairerEconomy
The economy is not working for the American people.Only 1 party has a platform for the next 4 yrs/the other has a loyalty pledge to a malignant narcissist who threatens our democracy1/12
We cannot hope to raise wages without taking on the profound racial biases at work in our employment system. The wage gap between Black workers and white workers is higher today than it was 20 years ago. 2/12 #DemPartyPlatform #WageGap #SystemicRacism
It takes a typical Black woman 19 months to earn what a typical white man earns in 12 months/for typical Latinas &Native American women, it takes almost
2 yrs. Dems believe we need to be much more proactive &aggressive in rooting out discrimination in our employment system. 3/12

If elected, you/@GOP won't hold employers of these low wage jobs that don't provide good benefits or pensions accountable, you just want Blacks mad at Latinos. You don't support Reparations for Blacks, #Fightfor15 or closing the #RacialWealthGap. #BlackPolitics #BlackVote #ADOS
Those poultry jobs @jamestulp talked about don't fix the #WageGap

Today marks #EqualPayDay, symbolizing how far into the year women have to work to catch up to the earnings of men from the previous year. And women of color have it worse — nationally they’ll need to work several more weeks or even months to achieve equal pay. #wagegap
WA is ranked the best place to work partly because we have rules to ensure #equalpay, accommodations for pregnant workers, sexual harassment protections and laws prohibiting pay secrecy in the workplace. We also have strong unions that raise the bar for all workers. #EqualPayDay
We’ve started a paid family leave program offering some of the most progressive benefits in the nation to all WA workers — regardless of their employer. Closing the #wagegap is complex, but we're up to the challenge. We have a lot more work to do, but we're doing it. #EqualPayDay

Today is “#EqualPayDay.”

There are a lot of ridiculous holidays—from “International Talk Like a Pirate Day” to “Have a Party With Your Bear Day” to “Bubble Gum Day.”
But “Equal Pay Day” is something worse. It’s a misleading effort designed to make women feel like they’re all, inevitably, being short-changed in their workplaces. That’s not the case.
Here’s the truth:
✅ Wage discrimination is illegal and has been in the U.S. since 1963, when the Equal Pay Act was signed into law.
✅ The 1964 Civil Rights Act also protects women from baseless gender discrimination in the workplace.

1/Got a bunch of #wagegap deniers in my mentions so here’s a thread about reductive thinking about women’s “choices”:
2/The wage gap results from complex dynamics that create the parameters of women’s decisions about work. Men and women *do* make different choices, ie, fields of study, types of work, “lifestyle” decisions but rarely women-make-choicers actually delve into *why* they make them.
3/ Women’s choices are made in the context of dominant gender socialization, entrenched educational biases, a lack of social support for women’s wage earning, and the mandate that women provide unpaid care and domestic labor.
