1 Year Later: The Biogen ‘Superspreader’ Conference That Sparked Boston’s Coronavirus Outbreak – NBC Boston
One year ago this weekend, more than 100 people from around the world convened at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf hotel for a biotech leadership nbcboston.com/news/coronavir…
conference led by the Cambridge-based biotech company Biogen.

The biotech conference would quickly become a superspreader event, launching the COVID-19 outbreak in eastern Massachusetts and causing as many as 330,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide, according to a study
published in the journal Science.
According to the study, the conference was responsible for introducing more than 120 new coronavirus cases into the Boston area. More than a quarter of the introductions accounted for an estimated 85% of cases, the study found.

1. "Covid-19 is dead now, and finally we can live without masks and can reunite with our friends and families" - how happy does this sounds? Everybody wishes to go back to normal, for that please wear your masks. #WearAMask
2. Today, this situation is really out of hands. Our whole generation is falling apart. We have lost hopes on our dreams, ambitions, studies, career and all we want to do is to SURVIVE. We want to live. We want to fight this so badly. #fightagainstcorona
3.We don't want to see our future getting destroyed right in front of our eyes because of this virus. Some of us might be thinking, do we even have a future? Yes, we do if we stay safe and follow all the protocols. It feels as we have aged, without actually ageing. #GenZ

THIS IS A CATCHY & ATTENTION-GRABBING TITLE

Today, the Province will likely announce what zone of the reopening framework we'll shift into as of Tuesday. Whatever is announced, though, doesn't change what we need to do. Why?

Kindly read these 14 tweets & we'll tell you. (1/14)
Fun fact: COVID-19 does not follow us on Twitter. COVID doesn't know, or particularly care, if we're in the Red or Orange zone.

The behaviours of the virus do not depend on the current ‘zone’ of public health restrictions. And, to be perfectly candid, neither should ours. (2/14)
Once upon a time we used to say #WeAreInThisTogether in our messaging. Here's the thing: we are, but we aren't. Not everyone is experiencing this pandemic the same.

Nurses, doctors, paramedics & healthcare workers have experienced things much differently than most of us. (3/14)

THREAD: MANDATORY MASKS. Please read

Public Health is about following evidence, so when we call for change, that change is the result of what our evidence is telling us. Lately evidence has been coming at great speed & volume. We've been doing our best to keep you informed (1/7)
but some of you may feel like in March & April we said masks weren't needed, then in May & June said masks were needed, & now we're saying they’ll soon be mandatory. We know this may have seemed confusing, and we're sorry about that. However, each shift was evidence-based, (2/7)
before we knew about asymptomatic transmission, there was no need for you to wear a mask unless you were sick. Then evidence emerged to support its existence. We needed to react quickly, so we asked you to wear masks when distancing was difficult to protect those around you (3/7)

1.  We note the fact that a large number of positive cases have emerged associated with the #TablighiJamaath meeting in Delhi is very likely because those who attended the gathering and their contact networks were specifically tested in large numbers.
2. We note that many of these cases were asymptomatic, i.e. current testing protocol will not pick them up. We have no idea of how many such asymptomatic cases might exist because of the lack of large-scale planned testing.
3. We feel that it was an error on the part of the organizers and the administration to allow the event in Delhi, or any other large gatherings elsewhere, to happen.

Let’s pause for a second, and remember two major #stigma spreading around as contagiously as #COVID19. 🦠
1️⃣Ethnicity of the virus and
2️⃣wearing #PPE

I’m addressing 2️⃣ today, but for more guidance on 1️⃣, & more social Do’s and don’ts, please refer to 👉unicef.org/documents/soci…
To summarize the ongoing debate: “Absence of evidence is NOT evidence of absence”. A half full glass 😷 can be better than none at all. This 🏴&🏳️ system is leading to two issues:
1️⃣ opportunity to incentivize PPE production is lost
2️⃣ STIGMA against those who choose to don.
If you have 12 minutes to spare, enjoy this well illustrated thesis on the topic, it might change your mind. @medpedshosp

THREAD (please read & RT)

As you've noticed, the guidelines coming from public health have been changing. Please know: in a pandemic, things change rapidly. As we endeavor to pass along the most up-to-date info, sometimes it means changing what we're telling you to do. (1/8)
For instance, up until recently the guidance for returning international travellers (who were asymptomatic) said it was ok to go for a walk or walk your dog. That is no longer the case. We understand that this is frustrating, and we apologize for any stress it has caused. (2/8)
But through it all, one thing hasn't changed: we are all in this together. We see your efforts to #PlankTheCurve. We know they're not easy, and we thank you.

If you need info, we've built several websites for you. Our main #COVID19 page is here OttawaPublicHealth.ca/Coronavirus

Named for the crown-like spikes on their surface. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Like MERS and SARS, #COVID19 is an infection of the respiratory system.

First identified in Wuhan, China in Dec 2019. #COVID19 has reached 169 countries, with ~235,000 cases and ~10,000 deaths. And it is spreading quickly. It took over 3 months to reach the first 100,000 cases, and only 12 days to reach the next 100,000.

Departmental
1. Cut all elective cases (only GI bleeds, cholangitis, OJ left; cancer cases reviewed case-by-case)
2. FTOCC +ve should be deferred if possible
3. Full PPE (hair net, face shield/goggles, N95, gowns, gloves etc) as appropriate per local guidance
3/
4. Extended use of N95, but not reuse (changing is protecting patients more than healthcare staff; if you take it off you shouldn't put the same one back on)
5. Scopes done by senior/independent endoscopists; no more training to reduce staff risk exposure and preserve PPE
