250K gone. And we know that's only what's being named. If you need to hold vigil right now, we made a mixtape last month to help folks do so at a distance. I'm putting it on right now: #WeGrieveTogether
The mixtape was played outside the Metropolitan Correctional Facility in Chicago on Oct. 7 to honor the 200K people who had died of COVID-19 in the US at that time, and in honor of people who are dying of COVID-19 in this country's cages. #WeGrieveTogether transformativespaces.org/2020/10/07/let…
This album contains assorted photos from our #WeGrieveTogether week of memorials, actions and vigils in Chicago last month, as well as the mixtape. We wanted to honor those lost at that time, but we also wanted to create something we could return to. facebook.com/media/set/?set…

TODAY is the beginning of the National Week of Mourning for people we have lost to COVID-19, and of our Signs, Shrines, Collages and a Mixtape: A Remote COVID Vigil event, which runs all week. We are collaging, creating shrines, hanging banners and more. facebook.com/events/8206524…
You may notice banners like the one pictured above popping up around Chicago. These are not "banner drops," but rather, an effort to create spaces where people can honor their grief in a shared way, even if they are viewing the banner at different times. #WeGrieveTogether
.@anarchocatfan and I put up this one this morning. If you are in the Rogers Park/Edgewater area, you can find this banner at Schreiber Park, if you would like to take a moment there, or leave a flower or candle. I don't know how long it will be up bc we did not get permission.

Working on the COVID Memorial Mixtape and zine for Signs, Shrines, Collages and a Mixtape: A Remote COVID Vigil has left me in tears multiple times this weekend. Don't forget to join us October 4-11 as #WeGrieveTogether. facebook.com/events/8206524… Image
The speeches folks contributed (thank you @radfagg, @bresha_meadows, @julianapino, @solbutterfly and @tanuja_devi) are moving, aching and beautiful. I am also just so grateful to be able to make things with you all right. #WeGrieveTogether Image
My favorite actions have always been the ones we all threw down to create something beautiful. In this heartbreaking, fucked up hour, it reminds me of who we are to each other and what we have the potential to do. #WeGrieveTogether Image

If you are going to write a piece about how something is not happening, you should really check first.
Folks who saw a piece about there being no national commemoration efforts, please know that's not true. There is a national call to action for vigils October 4-11. You can get involved here: actionnetwork.org/event_campaign…
The fact that things are happening and have been happening really is a better story and worth telling.

We will photograph and uplift these mini memorials on multiple platforms and post them with hashtag #WeGrieveTogether. You can find art for collages, signs and shrines here (or use your own): bit.ly/grieveart
Many of us will be doing hands on crafting for this, but you can also collage digitally, if you prefer. If you have access to a high quality color printer, pls consider sharing materials w people who do not have access, but who would like signs or to create collages or shrines.

So much love to everyone who has thrown down to organize this vigil. So many of you have jumped in. Because of you, it is going to be a powerful event. I am honored to be in community with people who are determined to memorialize our losses amid growing erasure. #WeGrieveTogether
This is what is needed. Collective grief is antifascist. We cannot win unless we counter the further erasure of mass death with memorialization and mass empathy. Image

And some of y'all are still over here like:
There are still ppl out here saying "well, it will be tougher to organize under Biden." In some ways, it will, since the people who would rather be at brunch will be at brunch (many of them weren't doing shit anyway, but I digress). But since organizing requires living people...
There has been a lot of erasure and downplaying of just how bad Trump's handling of COVID-19 has been. People have varying reasons for doing this, but there is no acceptable excuse. #WeGrieveTogether

Failing to commemorate mass death normalizes atrocity. Now that the normalization has set in, some people are afraid to process what we, as a society, largely have not. The enormity of it all has only snowballed while we have failed to collectivize our grief. #WeGrieveTogether
If you want to participate in some commemoration today, we have some art and other resources in this kit that you can share in honor of folks we have lost to COVID-19. We will also be holding a larger digital vigil in about two weeks. #WeGrieveTogether transformativespaces.org/2020/09/01/joi…

I'm having a banner made of the beautiful COVID-19 memorial image Elizabeth Perez made out of the names of about 1K people who were lost to the virus. @ChiFreeSchool will have the banner here in Chicago, so that there can be a COVID-19 memorial at every protest. #WeGrieveTogether Image
The list of names included a bunch of imprisoned folks, which means a lot to me personally, and also strongly and appropriately emphasizes that COVID-19 is a weapon of the state. #WeGrieveTogether
My collective may be sending a few of the banners to friends in other cities as well. If folks want the image file formatted for a 3 x 5 banner, so you can get your own banner printed, let me know. Elizabeth will have it formatted tonight.

The undeniable connection between the various forms of state violence deployed by this administration must be understood as part of a collective fascist agenda that is playing out even as we speak. #WeGrieveTogether #TrumpKenosha
We are witnessing mass murder and an escalation of criminalization, militarization, federal violence against protesters and the deterioration of shared governance, and many are not making these connections or naming them publicly. #WeGrieveTogether #TrumpKenosha
The heightened criminalization of protesters during COVID-19 creates a deadly fascistic mechanism: dissidents are being shuffled into facilities that could easily serve as death chambers, making dissent a crime punishable by death. #WeGrieveTogether #TrumpKenosha

Today, as Trump continues to stoke tension and inspire violence, we honor those we have lost to COVID-19 due to his handling of the crisis. Trump must not be allowed to erase these losses. Artists have created imagery featuring the names of some of the fallen. #WeGrieveTogether

In the homestretch of this election, we are witnessing an erasure of mass death that should be unthinkable. That erasure does not just hinder us politically. It is a fundamental injury to our collective humanity. 🧵 #WeGrieveTogether #TrumpKenosha
Some friends and I created a visual timeline of Trump's botched response to COVID-19. We encourage you to use it on your own pages, for events or educational purposes. You can access the timeline images & other tools here: transformativespaces.org/2020/09/01/joi… #WeGrieveTogether #TrumpKenosha Image
Artists have created some beautiful work for today honoring the lives of people we have lost to COVID-19. The lack of memorialization we are seeing around these deaths is, in of itself, a symptom of fascism that must be fought. #WeGrieveTogether

A team of grassroots organizers put this kit together in a marathon effort to create messaging to counter Trump's visit to Kenosha & his continued efforts to erase mass death in this moment and stoke racial tensions in pursuit of his fascist agenda.#WeGrieveTogether #TrumpKenosha

Tomorrow (9/1) we'll be sharing images honoring people who've been lost to COVID-19, a timeline of Trump's COVID response & educational content on the fascistic alignment between Trump & law enforcement. We'll be using the hashtag #WeGrieveTogether. I'll share the kit in the a.m. Image
The image above was created by Megan Carney in honor of the COVID-19 victims whose names are featured. This digital action has been put together by a group of grassroots folks in response to Trump's trip to Kenosha, and other fascist provocations. We hope you will join us.
We held a previous #WeGrieveTogether online vigil to mark the terrible milestone of 100K people in the U.S. being lost to COVID-19. As fate would have it, that vigil occurred the night the rebellions began.
