Happy #RefugeeRightsDay, Canada!!! 🍁🇨🇦❤️ Image
Today, on Canada's #RefugeeRightsDay, we broaden our #WelcomeToCanada campaign calling on provincial authorities to terminate their contracts with @CanBorder & stop CBSA from locking up immigration detainees in provincial jails. #NovaScotia is up next! hrw.org/news/2022/04/0…
🚨 In #NovaScotia, immigration detainees are held in provincial jails by default because there is NO dedicated immigration holding center in the province 🚨

Canadian Prime Ministers have a fun gambit: when things start to go really badly for them, they "prorogue" (suspend) Parliament, which dissolves all committees, inquiries, etc, until such time as they are ready to reconvene, with a tabula rasa.

Most egregiously, the far-right asshole and climate criminal Stephen Harper prorogued Parliament in the middle of the 2008 Great Financial Crisis in order to avoid a no-confidence vote that would have triggered new elections.

While this DID save Harper's bacon, it also left Canada without a legislature during a global crisis that threatened the nation's entire future. It was a crazed, reckless thing to do.

1/ Thread. Making a pot of halusky tonight and thinking of my recently passed grandmother, and the pride I feel in the Slovak cultural traditions she instilled in me. She came to Canada as an immigrant. She worked hard, learned English in her spare time and worked three jobs.
2/ That’s one of things I love the most about Canada, that many different cultures have come here to seek a better life; have worked hard and have added the richness of their cultures through work and sacrifice to our country’s social fabric. Canada wouldn’t be Canada without it.
3/ So in this, I differ Trudeau’s in that I don’t think “diversity” and “pluralism” are buzzwords that can just be thrown around for political gain. They are hard fought, hard won, precious, beautiful frameworks that don’t just magically happen - and they can be lost without work

1/ Thread. Provinces and taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for Trudeau’s utter failure to manage the integrity of our borders and the compassion of Canada’s asylum system. Perfect call by @fordnation and @MacLeodLisa here. thestar.com/news/queenspar…
2/ Ontario has a huge mess to clean up after the Wynne government. Trudeau’s plan to bus illegal border crossers to homeless shelters in other parts of Ontario is playing a shell game with human lives, and does nothing to stop the flow of people across our border.
3/ Taxpayers in Ontario need to ensure that immigration is planned and orderly. Trudeau’s requirement of Ford to help prop up his failure to close the loophole in the safe third country agreement is unreasonable - the fact that Wynne was even considering it is one of the many

1/ Thread and statement re this story. In January 2017, following a decision made by the US, Trudeau tweeted #welcometocanada. This incented tens of thousands of people to illegally cross our border. Many claimed asylum in Canada, even though most won’t have valid asylum claims.
2/ Politicians like Trudeau who use unplanned and disorderly immigration for political gain, including issuing proclamations of sanctuary cities, with no plan to pay for the inevitable costs associated with doing so, are reckless.
3/ They are reckless both to the Canadian taxpayer and with the lives and hopes that the illegal border crossers have.

Thread, per my last few tweets. Here’s my frustration - there are very few politicians right now who are willing to state the following inconvenient truths. 1) Unplanned immigration, with high volumes of those making asylum claims (many of which will be found invalid)...
....if difficult to sustain in a country like Canada that gives instant free access to generous social programs, that are paid for by levels of government who don’t have control of immigration levels or policy. 2)....
2)...without a plan for funding integration support, or to build and encourage a long term path to self reliance, the situation in Toronto unfolds. It’s all well and good to tweet #welcometocanada and declare sanctuary cities, but there have been no plans or budgets to...
