Not all #Black history in Walesπ΄σ §σ ’σ ·σ ¬σ ³σ Ώ beings+ends with #TigerBay: far from it. John Ystumllyn was an 18th-century Welsh gardener+1st first well-recorded black person of North Wales. He was stolen from Africa and brought to Wales. Here is a portrait of him as a teenager in 1754 3/ 
2/5. During the war of 1282, a month before Llywelyn's death, the Archbishop of Canterbury came to the Prince and relayed to him the offer of an earldom and an estate in England worth Β£1,000 if he would surrender and relinquish rule over northern Wales to Edward.
3/5. Llywelyn replied that he would not surrender his Welsh inheritance which his family had held since the days the refugees of Troy had first landed in Britain. He would not give up his rightful inheritance for estates in a foreign land with strange customs unfamiliar to him.

No one person truly owned the land. It was owned by the family as a whole. With each inheritor essentially owning a lifetime interest in the land. As such gwely or family land (land held by an established free Welsh family as opposed to land worked by unfree tenants

11th and 12th century Powys was an absolute mess. Following the death of daddy dom Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, his half brothers Bleddyn and Rhiwallon inherited Gwynedd and Powys, having colluded and helped in their brothers destruction and eventual murder.

Rhiwallon died early and it was the descendants of Bleddyn who would continue to rule in Powys for the next few centuries. After the death of Bleddyn in 1075 Powys collapsed into an incoherent mess of competing princes and branches of the royal dynasty fighting for the crown

Deep in the Black Mountains is an ancient oval churchyard. It encloses a sandstone rubble church that has clung to the slope for over 800 years. A sundial by the porch has been telling the time since 1686. Inside, an oxblood roodscreen has survived against the odds.

The screen dominates the interior at Llanelieu. It was carved in the 14th century and painted with oxβs blood. The red is peppered with stencilled white roses. In the centre, a cross is picked out in bare wood- a reminder of the crucifix that was lost during the Reformation.

The screen is supported by six moulded legs. Originally, these would have been enclosed with panelling to create two small side altars. On the eastern face of the screen, facing the altar, is a beam, from which was hung the Lenten veil.
