In advance of @jkenney's 6 p.m. press conference about his botched pandemic response, let's take stock of his disastrous record.

Spoiler: from the start, his entire approach to #COVID19AB has been defined by cruelty and incompetence. #ableg THREAD 🧵 1/24 macleans.ca/opinion/what-j…
He began by laying off 20,000+ education workers.

Seriously. One of his first actions was ensuring that an additional 20,000+ Albertans had to worry about paying rent, putting food on the table, buying clothes for their kids, etc., etc.

Then he gave himself and his Ministers sweeping new powers with Bill 10 (and then subverted a review of that decision). #ableg 3/24 calgaryherald.com/opinion/corbel…

THREAD

In early July, I voted to maintain Calgary's indoor mask bylaw for a few more weeks out of an abundance of caution, especially considering the upcoming Calgary Stampede.

Premier @jkenney ridiculed Calgary City Council for even considering this measure.
It's now August 25.

Hospitalizations are up. ICU beds are filling. Nurses and doctors are facing a capacity crisis. Parents are worried about their unvaccinated children.

And 1,076 new COVID cases. Today.
The arrogance and incompetence of this conservative provincial government is only exceeded by their indifference to our well-being.

The @UCPCaucus is, as always, more concerned about their political base.

.@jkenney is still hiding from the public and dodging questions about the resignations and demotions of many of his closest UCP colleagues. This act of political cowardice wasn't the first time he's gone missing.

A few examples:

THREAD 1/ 6 #Ableg calgarysun.com/opinion/column…
At the end of 2019, the UCP fired the election commissioner who was investigating the UCP's own leadership election. One of the most brazen acts I've seen in my time in politics.

Where was @jkenney? Hiding in Texas. Silent, cowardly. #ableg 2/6 thestar.com/edmonton/2019/…
As the second wave of #COVIDAB hit, @jkenney went missing for 10 days. Silence. No leadership. During that time, 73 Albertans died.

#WhereIsKenney trended for days. #ableg 3/6 edmonton.ctvnews.ca/albertans-aski…

We're all rightly angry about the arrogance and entitlement on display in the UCP vacation scandal, but remember that @jkenney's entire approach to the pandemic has been defined by cruelty and incompetence.

Here's a few main points.

It has become clear in the last few days that @jkenney and @shandro have given up on Alberta, battling Covid-19 and any attempt at leadership in general. #WhereIsKenney is trending. The government will not take decisive action designed to improve your odds of staying healthy. 1/4
Time has come for individual Albertans to take appropriate action to safeguard the health of their families. Healthy young families (working and in school/daycare) should plan for and expect to be sick and isolating sooner rather than later as cases continue to spike. 2/4
What preparations do you need to make?

If you are older and high risk, you know what to do. Go to ground and plan that this will not be for the short term. Hospital and ICU care may shortly become rationed and then unavailable, so it is critical that you don’t get sick. 3/4
